Leissner inks with Lander University
BY BRANDON REED
EAST Jackson standout pitcher Hayley
Leissner signed a softball scholarship with Lander
University in Greenwood, S.C. on Tuesday. The
senior hurler officially inked with the NCAA
Division I school at the EJCHS media center,
with friends and family in attendance.
Leissner said a trip to the campus helped her
decide to become a Bearcat. The Lander team
finished with a 15-41 overall record last year.
“I really like the atmosphere up there,” she
said. “I met some of the girls and they were
really nice. It just seemed like a place I would
want to be at...They have a new coach this year,”
she said.
Leissner says it’s amazing to come off of a
successful year with the Lady Eagles and get
ready to move to a college program.
“I love it,” she said. “Starting off this year,
nobody really knew what was going to happen.
We ended up having a great turnout, which was
very exciting. Now, having the scholarship also
added onto it - it’s great.”
She ended the 2007 season with a 0.25 ERA,
striking out over 300 batters on the way to the
AA-North sectionals in Rome.
Leissner said leadership is the main thing
she’ll take with her from the Lady Eagles pro
gram.
“I think leadership, mainly,” she said. “How
to step up. Being a first-year school, the seniors
have had to step up and be role models for
everybody.”
East Jackson head softball coach Jason Rainey
says Leissner defiantly understands how to be a
team leader.
“She’s a team player most of all,” Rainey said.
“Obviously, she’s a real good player. But, as far
as being a teammate, and being in a leadership
role, I’d say that’s where she excelled. That
separates her from a lot of other good players.”
Rainey said Leissner was an important part of
the Lady Eagles’ successful first year.
“She was very important, not only because of
her talent, but because we always could fall back
on her if we needed to,” he said.
“And always is a lot. She was the only girl
that we had that had been to sectionals. So, she
offered a lot of experience to our team. She was
very important.”
Leissner says the person that helped her the
most this past year was a close member of
her family, her sister and teammate, Keegan
Leissner.
“She was always there for me, and I could
always count on her,” Hayley said. “She played
centerfield, so I could always just turn around
and see her there. I knew I could count on her,
as well as everybody on my team. But, I really
depended on her as well, I guess because she’s
my little sister.”
Rainey says he expects Leissner’s college
career to be successful.
“I think she’ll do great,” he said. “I had a good
feeling about her the whole time. I think she’ll
have an opportunity to start up there. If she
doesn’t, I have no doubt in my mind that she’ll
find her way in there somehow. That’s just the
way she is. I think she’ll do a great job.”
