East Jackson Middle School stu
dents and faculty members held a
program on Tuesday, Nov. 13, to
honor all veterans.
School principal Frank Sarratt
welcomed everyone to the pro
gram. Both the middle school band
and chorus performed for those in
attendance. The JROTC from East
Jackson Comprehensive High School
presented the flags and EJMS FFA
officers led the pledge to the flags.
Sarratt recognized the 14 veterans
from all branches of the military that
were in attendance at the program.
Tanya Butler, at-risk teacher for
EJMS, introduced the guest speak
ers.
EJCHS JROTC Director/Senior
Army Instructor Lt. Cmdr. Tom
Taylor spoke to those in attendance.
“I want to start by saying it is a
great day to be an American.” Taylor
said.
He added that Veteran’s Day is a
time for reflection on things that we
have.
“The reason we have them is
because of our veterans,” he said.
“Veterans have made a great sac
rifice over the years and they will
continue to safeguard the way we, as
Americans, live.”
EJMS Resource Officer Wendell
Wooley addressed the group. Wooley
said, veterans, whether they served
in peace time or during war, are still
veterans.
“We paid our price and some paid
the ultimate price,” he said. “All gave
some and some gave all.”
United States Navy Lieutenant
Commander Russell Crow, husband
of EJMS eighth grade teacher Julie
Crow, also addressed the group.
Crow presented a slide show of parts
of his life while in the Navy and also
slides of fellow Navy men who gave
their life defending the country.
The students were urged to talk to
the veterans after the program and tell
them thank you for the sacrifices they
made for freedom.
EJMS student council representa
tive, Michaela Smith, urged all stu
dents and faculty members to bring
items for care packages to be sent
to soldiers. Items will be accepted
through Friday, Dec. 7, at the school.
