Piedmont CASA gets Jackson EMC Foundation grant
THE PIEDMONT Court Appointed Special
Advocate (CASA) Program — which trains and
supervises community volunteer advocates for abused
and neglected children in Juvenile Court proceed
ings in Banks, Barrow and Jackson counties — has
been awarded a $8,145 grant by the Jackson EMC
Foundation.
Grant funds will be used to recruit and train 20 new
volunteer advocates by the end of June 2008 and hold
four volunteer classes, with 30 hours of classroom
time and 10 hours of courtroom observance for each
advocate in training.
Foundation grants are funded through the Operation
Round Up program, to which 90 percent of Jackson
EMC’s members contribute. Participating members’
monthly electric bills are rounded up to the next dol
lar amount, an average of $6 per year.
Since the beginning of the program in 2005, more
than $1.85 million has been awarded by the Jackson
EMC Foundation since 2005, including 155 grants to
organizations and 72 grants to individuals.
Jackson EMC Foundation grants assist charitable
and community organizations, as well as individu
als. Any individual or organization in the counties
served by Jackson EMC — Athens/Clarke, Banks,
Barrow, Franklin, Gwinnett, Hall, Jackson, Lumpkin,
Madison and Oglethorpe counties — may apply for a
foundation grant.

Hospice offering free holiday grief seminar
HOSPICE OF Northeast Georgia
Medical Center (NGMC) is offering a
free bereavement seminar focusing on
grief and the holidays.
The seminar will be held on Tuesday,
Dec. 11, from 10:30-11:45 a.m„ at the
Buford Senior Center, 2755 Suwanee
Avenue, Buford.
The seminar is open to anyone who
has experienced a close, personal loss
of a friend or loved one. Light refresh
ments will be served.
The seminar is provided at no
charge, but registration is required
since space is limited.

Lindsay’s Legacy gets Jackson EMC Foundation grant
THE JACKSON County Family Connection has
been awarded a $15,000 grant by the Jackson EMC
Foundation for the Lindsay’s Legacy mentoring
program.
Lindsay’s Legacy, named in honor of the coun
ty’s first mentoring program coordinator Jack
Lindsay, uses trained volunteers to work with pub
lic schools students who need individual support.
Students being mentored build skills, knowledge,
personal attributes and positive attitudes. Mentors
act as guides as they work with the students to
ensure they become healthy, educated, employable
and connected through participation in family and
community life.
Throughout the program, schools evaluate the
student’s reading, math, social studies and lan
guage arts skills, along with monitoring behavior,
tardiness and absenteeism.
Grant funds will be used to fund the mentoring
program’s part-time coordinator position.
