JHS BOYS BASKETBALL
Dragons host Hart County Friday
JHS defeats Oconee, Eastside in tournament
By Brandon Reed
WHAT A difference a few
days makes.
After a hard start to the
season, falling to Heritage
in the opening game of the
Tabo’s Tip-Off Tournament,
the Jefferson Dragons boys
basketball team fought back
to win their next two games,
and finish fifth overall in tour
nament play.
The Dragons now look
ahead to their next match up,
as they 11 play host to Hart
County Friday night.
Both teams enter Friday
night’s game with a 2-1 over
all record. The Bulldogs have
scored 193 points so far this
season, while Jefferson has
put 133 points on the board.
In their last two meetings,
Hart County has come away
the victor, winning in January
of 2008 and in December of
2007. Jefferson defeated the
Bulldogs back in January of
2007, and wants to even the
score on Friday.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7
p.m.
Jefferson began their drive
for victory on Nov. 25 against
Oconee County. After being
down most of the first quarter,
ending 15-12, the Dragons
fought back, and led the con
test 29-21 at the half. From
there on, Jefferson controlled
the lead, and ended up win
ning 54-43.
Greg Hayes led the Dragons
in scoring against Oconee
with 11 points, also recording
10 rebounds. Tyler Bailey
scored 10 points on the night.
Jefferson coach Bolling
DuBose said he didn't feel
like the team shot the ball
great.
“It's going to take a while
with the football players just
coming out,” he said. “It’s
going to take them two or
three weeks to get them into
the kind of basketball shape
where they’re handling the
ball well and shooting the
ball well.”
DuBose said he felt the team
did a good job defensively.
“We did a great job on the
boards. We out rebounded
them by 15 rebounds. It was
a good game for us.”
After a break over the
Thanksgiving holiday,
Jefferson returned to action
on Saturday. After the initial
loss in the tournament, the
best Jefferson could hope for
was a fifth place finish. Their
opportunity to take fifth place
came against the Eastside
Eagles.
After being down the entire
first half, Jefferson entered
halftime down 19-16.
“We were just not taking
good shots,” DuBose said.
“We were rushing shots, and
a had a lot of turnovers in
the first half. We weren’t
trying to rush the basket, we
were settling for a lot of jump
shots.”
But in the second half,
Jefferson outscored Eastside
33-15, attacking the basket
and shooting 25 free throws
as they came back to win
49-34.
“We handled the press bet
ter, did a much better job
on offense, getting the shots
we wanted, and we hit our
free throws,” DuBose said.
“They were fouling us a lot in
the fourth quarter, and Chris
Beck hit 9 out of 10, and
Darius Minor hit 4 out of 4.”
Beck and Minor both
scored 14 points, while Minor
recorded eight rebounds.
Beck was also named to the
All Tournament Team.
“We’ve still got a bunch of
things to improve on, and we
have some tough teams com
ing up,” DuBose said.
That includes Friday’s pair
ing with Hart County.
“Hart County is always a
great AAA team, and that
should be a good game for
us.”
Jefferson’s Chris Beck scored 14 points against Eastside, and was named to the All
Tournament Team after the Tabo’s Tip-Off Tournament last week.

“We...did not shoot the ball well at all,” he
said. “We were 12 of 37 from the field and we
have to shoot better than that. We shot well
from the free throw line, going 22 of 26. We
will work to correct our mistakes.”
Beaver said despite the team doing a lot of
shooting in practice, his team just struggled on
Nov. 25.
He also credited a hard playing Banks
County team.
“Banks played very hard and I think they
will do well this season,” he said.
Beaver said he has two post players who will
be out until after Christmas.
“One has mono and the other with a broken
ankle,” he said. “They will help us when we
get them healthy.”
The Panthers were next scheduled to travel
to Johnson to face the Knights on Tuesday.
Results were unavailable at press time.
