ROTC PLACES THIRD
The Jefferson High School AFJROTC Color Guard Team
of Matthew Tillman, Lance Wilson, Miguel Rodriguez,
and Brian Herron took third place at the Air Force
Southeast Regional Drill Meet.
THE DRILL and Color
Guard Teams from Jefferson
High School competed in
the Southeast Regional Drill
Championships on November
15 at Tift County High School
and came home with a third
place in the Armed Color
Guard competition and fifth
place in the Unarmed Drill
competition.
Even though Jefferson was
competing at this meet for
the first time, the Cadets of
the Dragon Group did not let
it affect their performance,
leaders state. They also were
the smallest school compet
ing at the meet with most of
the teams from AAAA and
AAAAA high schools.
“The cadets were deter
mined to leave this meet with
some hardware and that’s
what they did,” stated Chief
Master Sergeant Budell
Willis, team coach.
The Color Guard Team
of Matthew Tillman, Lance
Wilson, Miguel Rodriguez,
and Brian Herron took on
22 other teams and took
third place. The Drill
Team of Gorge Rodriguez,
Emily Mitchell, Miranda
Bellew, Timmy Warren,
Andre Gonzales, Lance
Wilson, Matthew Tillman,
Clay Gooch, Ryan Fletcher,
Amber Simerly, Brian
Herron, Hannah Botts, and
Miguel Rodriguez took the
fifth place.
This regional meet had the
best teams from Georgia,
Northern Florida, and South
Carolina competing for the
opportunity to show the
Air Force National Drill
Competition officials that
they had what it takes to
compete at the Air Force
Nationals. After a strong
showing at the Houston
County and Ridgeland meets
over the past month, Jefferson
was poised to make a strong
showing at this regional
meet.
Senior Master Sergeant
Darrell Purvis, of Tift County
High School (2008 State
Champions), stated, “Looks
like we’ve got another team
to be concerned with at these
meets now.”
The Dragon Group has
now finished up the year
on a strong note and look
forward to the 2009 meets
that are coming up in the
Spring to include the State
Championships and possi
bly the Air Force National
Championships.
