SIZING IT UP

points on the night. Photo by Blair Buffington
Dragons continued from IB
their time, executed well, and
got some good shots off.
With 27 seconds left,
Jefferson took their first lead
of the night, moving ahead
60-58. Hart had one last
chance to tie the game, but
Darius Minor blocked a lay
up, got the rebound, and was
fouled with about a second left
on the clock. He made both
foul shots to put the 62-58 win
away for the Dragons.
“I thought our kids just
really worked hard the whole
game,” said coach Bolling
DuBose. ‘‘It’s not that we
played a perfect game by any
means. We had some things
that we did wrong that we
need to improve on. The big
thing is that I feel like they
played extremely hard the
whole game, and at the end, I
think we played a little harder
and a little smarter than Hart
County did.”
Minor led the Dragons in
scoring with 21 points, while
Beck scored 13 and Hoytez
Damons scored 10.
Damons also led in rebounds
with nine.
‘‘I thought he did a real
ly good job inside for us,”
DuBose said.
DuBose also pointed to
the rebounds as a key to the
win. Jefferson had 40 to Hart
County’s 37.
‘‘We had to take care of
the ball and not turn it over,
DuBose said. “We ended up
with a lot more turnovers than
we thought we could have and
still win.”
Jefferson had around 33
turnovers, but they made Hart
County turn over the ball 26
times on the night.
“We took a gamble press
ing them the whole game,
just like they pressed us,”
DuBose said. “I really didn't
know if that would work or
not, because they’re so quick,
that they can beat the press
and shoot a bunch of lay-ups
before you can get back.
“I thought our kids did
a great job on the press all
night.”
DuBose said the impact of
the game will depend on how
his team reacts to it.
“As I told the kids after the
game, as great a win as it is, if
the players approach it as ‘we
just beat one of the best AAA
teams in the state, so we’re
really good and we don't need
to work hard to get better',
then it doesn’t do anything to
help you. If they understand
that we did it making a bunch
of mistakes and we can be
better, it should motivate them
to be better. I think it will.”
DuBose says he feels
his team is off to a pretty
good start, especially with
Commerce coming to town
on Friday.
“Coach Bridges does a good
job, and has some kids back
from last year. We’ve won the
last several games in a row,
and I told our kids it would
make Commerce's season to
beat us because we've beaten
them so many times, just like
in football how many times
they beat us in a row.”

IT WAS an up and down
week for the Panthers of
Jackson County, as Jackson
County lost first to Johnson
on Tuesday, then in a close
game to Banks County on
Saturday.
Up next is a home stand
against Morgan County for
region play on Friday. Tip-off
is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
The Panthers started off the
week last Tuesday with an
80-40 loss to Johnson.
It was not a good game
for Jackson County, as they
were plagued by turnovers
and poor shooting, going 12
for 37 from two point range,
and five of 14 from three
point range.
Alex Crawford led in scor
ing against Johnson with
nine points, while Nick Oney
scored seven.
Jackson County was hop
ing to rebound Saturday
against the Leopards of Banks
County in Homer. They
came close, staying within
shouting distance throughout
the game. The Panthers led
Banks County 9-7 at the end
of the first quarter, but lost
the lead in the second quar
ter, trailing 21-18 going into
the half.
The Leopards began to pull
out a lead in the third quarter,
moving out 38-27. But the
Panthers began to close the
gap in the fourth, moving to
within three points with 16
seconds left on the clock.
But the Panthers turned over
the ball with seven seconds
left, allowing Banks County
to score again, and to record
a 55-50 win.
Joseph Smith led the
Panthers in scoring, record
ing 17 points against the
Leopards. Jonathan Baxter
scored 12 points, and picked
up nine rebounds, while
Juice Harrison recorded eight
points and eight rebounds.
“We are still struggling with
turnovers,” said coach Britt
Beaver. “We are improv
ing in some areas, but we
are still young and making
young mistakes. It hurts now
to make these mistakes, but
I would rather make them
now than in February when it
really counts.”
The Panthers were sched
uled to travel to Elbert
County Tuesday to face the
Blue Devils. Results of that
game were unavailable at
press time.
