Obituary
Paid obit
Verne Davis
Verne Luther Davis passed
away on December 6, 2008, of
heart and liver failure.
Verne was a true Southern
Gentleman and a man of great
integrity. He was 76 years and
the son of Anna Murray Davis
and Verne Luther Davis of
Commerce, Ga.
Verne graduated front the
University of Georgia major
ing in Business Administration.
He was a member of the SAE
Fraternity, initiated by the
Georgia Beta Chapter in 1952,
Verne served in the U.S. Air
Force. He was a
volunteer at the b -2 "■
VA Hospital in -
Decatur where
he loved greet
ing America’s heroes.
He and his partner Charles
"Chick” Grant formed a com
pany called "Tex Trim” that sold
products to the textile indus
try. After Chick retired Verne
changed the name to Davis and
Associates. He was a member of
the Clothing Designer’s Club for
many years. He was a member
of Capital City Club where he
enjoyed playing golf.
As a member of Second Ponce
de Leon Baptist Church, he
served as a Deacon and Director
of the Five Year Old program.
Verne and his wife, Anna,
shared a deep passion for gar
dening, especially growing
roses. Their garden was featured
in numerous publications both
locally and nationally. Verne
maintained all the water features
in their wonderful garden. He
took great pride in his vegetable
and herb garden.
Verne enjoyed cooking and
had many culinary talents, but
his greatest joy was to cook
his grandchildren’s favorite
breakfast of pancakes and bacon
on the grill. He was the very
meaning of the words “Loving
Grandfather". Even when he
was in failing health he would
drive to see his grandchildren
play baseball and soccer. He
was a loving and supportive
father to Beth and Verne,Jr.
His wife Anna, children Verne,
Jr. and Beth, grandchildren Anna,
Kendall and Davis Reganall, Jack
and Wyatt Davis survive him.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday, December 9, 2008, at
two o’clock at Second Ponce
de Leon Baptist Church. The
family received friends at one
o'clock, one hour prior to the
service.
The family has requested that
donations be made to the Second
Ponce de Leon Baptist Church
Building fund.

Rashe Walter "Ray" Stephens
Jr., 67, of Peachtree City, died
Wednesday, December 3, 2008.
Born in Jefferson, he was the
son of Rashe Walter Stephens
Sr. and Ruthie Studivant. He was
retired front Norfolk Southern
Corporation.
Survivors include his wife of
41 years, Judith “Judy" Stephens,

M. Stephens Davis, Loganville;

Ruby Doss Legg, 98, of
Jefferson, died Thursday,
December 4, 2008.
Born in Jackson County, she
was the daughter of the late
Charles M.
and Minnie
Nicholson
Doss. She
was retired
from the food
service indus
try, was a
farmer along
with her hus
band, and was
a homemaker. She had been a
member of the Dry Pond United
Methodist Church since 1932
and was recognized for her quilt
making abilities, having shipped
many around the world. She
was also known for her great
cooking skills and made good
use of her flower growing abil
ity, having furnished flowers for
many local Churches over the
years. Mrs. Legg was preceded
in death by her husband, Lester
Jackson Legg; and a son-in-law.
Bill Mahaffey.
Survivors include a daughter,
Marion Mahaffey, Jefferson; sons
and daughters-in-law. Jack and
Joanne Legg and Doug and Kim
Legg, all of Commerce, Bill and
Sue Legg, Jefferson; sister, Inez

children; 25 great-grandchildren;
three great-great-grandchildren;

Hunsinger
Marshall Hunsinger, 77, of
Athens in Jackson County, died
Tuesday, December 2, 2008.
A native of Madison County,
he had lived in the Athens area
all his life, and was the son of the
late Charlie and Mazie Shellnutt
Hunsinger and was retired from
the University of Georgia. He
was a veteran, having served in
the United States Army and was
Baptist.
Survivors include a brother,
Bobby Hunsinger, Athens.

Robert Harold Perry Sr., 81,
of Commerce, died Monday,
December 8, 2008, at Bentley
Assisted Living at Northminster.
Born in Jackson County, he
was the son of the late Raymond
Coil and Lottie
Bell Williams
Perry. He was
the retired owner
of Friendly
Foods, a member of Commerce
First Baptist Church, and was a
United States Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Joy
Hollingsworth Perry, Commerce;

Glenn Jones Jr.
Glenn (Hearn) Jones Jr., 79,
of Braselton died Wednesday,
December 3, 2008. Born in
Morgan County, he was the son of
the late Glenn Hearn and Martha
Carson Jones. He was a mem
ber of the New
Liberty United
Methodist
Church and was
retired from
Gulf Oil Corporation, where
he drove a tanker truck. He
was a Justice of Peace in the
1970s and early 1980s for West
Jackson County. Mr. Jones was
also a mason and served in the
Navy and was in Korea. He
was preceded in death his wife,
Sara Clark Jones and a daughter,
Judy Jones.
Survivors include his fiance,
Marjorie Hulsey, Brasleton; sons
and daughters in law, Glenn and
Pam Jones and Brad and Jennifer

Jones, all of Braselton; grandchil
dren, Brian G. Jones, Kalyn Jones

Silas "S.R.” Ruben Miller, 74,

was retired from construction
and was a member of Whole
Word Ministry in Dahlonega.

Daphne M. Parker, 85, of
Statham, died Wednesday,
December 3, 2008.
Born in Jackson County, she
was the daughter of the late
Emory and Dora Nix Mitchell.
She was a member of the New
Pentecost United Methodist
Church for over 50 years plus,
she was a seamstress for more
than 30 years working at Barrow
Manufacturing, Statham Garment
and Carwood Manufacturing
companies. She later made and
sold arts and crafts, producing
many Raggedy Ann and Andy
dolls in which she took great
pride, and loved crocheting and
taught many others the craft. She
had been a resident of Athens
Heritage Nursing Home since
December 2007. Mrs. Parker was
preceded in death by her hus
band of 57 years, Hugh Dorsey
Parker.
Survivors include a son,
Teddy Parker, Winder; daugh
ter, Patricia Hendrix, Statham;
grandchildren. Sherry and David
Sims, Jeff and Lisa Hendrix,

J. Mac Barber, 91, died
Sunday, December 7, 2008, in
Macon.
Born in Banks County, he
grew up in Commerce, and was
the son of the late William L. and
Susan K. Barber. Mr. Barber was
preceded in death by his wife,
Janette McGarity Barber; sis
ters, Marian Barber and Kathryn
B. Gaultney;
and broth-
ers, William =
Ralph Barber
and Dwight F.
Barber. He attended Georgia
Institute of Technology and
was a veteran, having served in
the United States Army during
World War II.
Mr. Barber served in the
Georgia Legislature from 1949
to 1973 as a representative from
Jackson County Public Television
in Georgia, the Fernbank Science
Center and educational bills were
among his major focus while
serving in Atlanta. He served as
Mayor of Commerce, Chairman
of the State Committee on
Education, President of Georgia
School Board Association,
President of Commerce Kiwanis
Club, Chairman of the Board
of Commerce First Methodist
Church, Chairman of Jackson-
Commerce Hospital Authority,
President of Chamber of
Commerce, Chairman of
the Georgia Committee on
Children and Youth, Governor’s
Conference on Education
and Jackson-Banks Chapter
American Red Cross.
He was elected to five terms
on the Georgia Public Service
Commission where he served as
Chairman. He was recognized by
the Georgia Legislature for his
efforts in protecting the rights
of the consumer. Such organiza
tions as the Georgia Association
of Education, Georgia Science
and Technology Commission,
Emory University's Kappa Phi
Kappa Literary Society and the
National Association of Retired
People have recognized him
as an advocate for the elderly,
the children and the poor. He
championed the extension of free
telephone service across north
Georgia.
Barber was honored for
his accomplishments by the
University of Georgia, Emory
University, Georgia Association
of Educators, Georgia Youth
Council, National Association of
Retired People and the Georgia
PTA.
