LATINO families at South
Jackson and Benton elemen
tary schools are getting more
involved in their children's
education, thanks to a parent
group.
LIFE (Latino Involvement
for Family Education) is a
group of families from Benton
and South Jackson elemen
tary schools with the goal of
developing the home-school
relationship.
The meeting is conducted
mostly in Spanish, but English
is also spoken — so both
English and Spanish speaking
families are invited to attend.
The group meets monthly
on Friday evenings. The next
LIFE meeting is Friday, Jan.
23, at SJES.
Dinner is at 6:30 p.m., and
the adult meeting starts around
7 p.m. The main course for
dinner is provided by the ele
mentary schools and families
are welcome to bring a side
dish or dessert. Children are
welcome to enjoy dinner with
their families and childcare is
provided by the schools dur
ing the adult meeting.
At the November LIFE
meeting, the group reviewed
the topics of concern.
The following topics have
been addressed: homework
help, discipline, bus safety
and discipline, and English
language classes for adults.
At the October LIFE meet
ing, a PowerPoint presentation
about homework tips for par
ents was shared. Parents also
received weekly homework
expectations from the teach
ers at their school. After the
presentation, students were
asked to join their parents and
complete a family homework
contract. Bus safety and disci
pline were also discussed.
At the September LIFE
meeting, adults discussed and
brainstormed solutions to sev
eral questions.
In small groups, adults rotat
ed from table to table discuss
ing and answering the table
question until all adults were
able to give input on every
topic. The questions included:
What are barriers to being
more involved with school?
What would you like your
relationship with the school to
be like? What is/not working
for your family?
The following topics are
going to be discussed Spring
2009: PTO translator, school
lunches, motivation, CRCT
study skills, and transition
ing from elementary to middle
school.
After the topics of concern
were reviewed, the adults sep
arated into two groups: plan
ning for future LIFE meetings
and behavior management at
home (12 3 Magic).
Upcoming meetings will be
held on Feb. 13, at BES; and
March 30, at SJES to discuss
CRCT study skills and prepa
ration.
JEFFERSON Academy
has recognized fifth graders
who made honor roll for sec
ond quarter, as well as those
who had perfect attendance
in first and second semester.
