Gilreath, Livingston to marry
Randy and Sandra Carter,
Watkinsville, announce the
engagement and forthcoming
marriage of their daughter,
Jessica Nicole Gilreath, to
Timothy AllenLivingston, son
of Donna and Ken Simmons,
Hanover, Penn., and the late
Mark Livingston.
The bride-elect is the
granddaughter of Charles
and Brenda Coffia, Jefferson,
and Jack Carter, Auburn, and
the late Delores Echols.
Ms. Gilreath is a 2003
graduate of Jackson County
Comprehensive High
School.
The future groom is the
grandson of Pete and Caroline
Livingston and the late Arbia
and Kathleen Trish, all of
Hanover, Penn.
Mr. Livingston is a 1996
graduate of Littlestown High
School in Pennsylvania and
is employed by Paragon
Service Technologies.
The wedding is planned for
1 p.m. May 30,2009, at Cabin
in the Woods, Watkinsville.
Invitations will be sent.
The couple met through
an online chat room and
MS. GILREATH AND
MR. LIVINGSTON
immediately began dating.
Their first date is memorable
because Ms. Gilreath gave
Mr. Livingston the wrong
directions, and he got lost.
A year after they met online,
Mr. Gilreath came to Georgia
from Pennsylvania for a visit
and never went back. They
dated five years before he
proposed at Christmas.
“We had just finished open
ing Christmas gifts,” Ms.
Gilreath said. “I was on the
floor cleaning up the paper.
He got down on my level and
said, ‘Will you marry me?’
I said yes, after a five-year
wait.”
Historical Society to meet
Sunday at Victorian home
THE JACKSON County
Historical Society will meet
at the Pendergrass House
in Jefferson at 2:30 p.m.
Sunday, Jan. 18.
Dr. Bass Pendergrass built
the house in 1893, and it is
Jefferson’s best example of
High Victorian Queen Anne
style architecture, accord
ing to historical society
members. The gingerbread
in the gables and porch is
marked by generous spindle
work, different shingle pat
terns and carved brackets.
Former owner Jennie Snare
will be present to talk about
the history of the house.
Current owners Felicia and
Christopher Brown live in
the house and use it for an
event venue.
Directions: From Athens
Road (Highway 129)
take Highway 15 toward
Commerce at the Jefferson
square. The house is next to
the Pendergrass Store build
ing at 27 Sycamore Street
(Highway 15). Park on the
square or behind Mike’s
Grill. For information, call
Caine at 706-654-9066.
Alzheimer’s support group offered
AN Alzheimer’s Support
Group meets monthly under
the auspices of Bentley
Assisted Living at Jefferson
and it is open to everyone.
The meetings are held at 7
p.m. on the last Tuesday of
each month.
Steve Iroff, executive
director at Bentley, told of
the group when he spoke to
the Jefferson Woman’s Club
recently.
No day care service is avail
able at Bentley, Iroff said, but
the facility does offer respite
care of from two to 30 days.
Iroff was accompanied by
Alison Arnett, director of
marketing and administration
at Bentley, when he addressed
the club, which held its lun
cheon meeting at Mabeth’s.
The door prize was won by
Carolyn Keasler and Betty
Martin, president, presided.
Skateboard Q&A continued from page 1C
Those are a few of the
terms.
There are few tricks I do, but
a lot I’ll just use my favorite
trick — a kickflip. It involves
you positioning your feet cor
rectly and flipping the board
one rotation and then landing
on the board.
Q: When you “fly” up in the
air, how do you keep the skate
board at your feet?
A: It’s all gravity. When your
weight is on the board it stays
with you. Kind of like when a
rock is on top of paper and you
drop it from a high spot. But if
you don’t do the trick right, the
board can come out from under
you and that will make you
what we call “whipe-out.”
Q: How many times do you
think you’ve fallen? Have you
been hurt?
A: Oh, I fall a lot. I just
recently fractured my arm.
Q: Tell me something
about the skateboard culture.
Are there all kinds of people
involved, or a certain kind of
person? Mostly guys, or are
girls involved, too? Have you
met a lot of people through it?
A: It is a lifestyle. There are
definitely a lot of girls involved,
but mainly guys. I have made a
load of friends in skating.
Q: Are there a lot of skate
boarders around here? Where
do they go? What do they do?
Is there a skate park around
here?

A: There are a lot of skaters
in my area. Skaters go to their
own yards or friends’ (yards).
Also in the street and behind
grocery stores. We all have dif
ferent styles. We had a make
shift park...but they made us
remove all of the stuff.
Q: Have you run into nega
tivity as a skateboarder?
A: Oh, all the time. Police
act like they hate us. And other
people look at us like oudaws.
..If we had a skate park, we
wouldn’t be in the streets.
Q: What kind of skateboard
do you use? What did you
start off with? What’s the dif
ference?
A: I am sponsored by
Warrior Extreme Sports. I use
their decks and they are amaz
ing.
I started with a Wal-Mart
board. Wal-Mart boards are like
thick cardboard and they are
really heavy. The Pro boards
are made of pressed wood and
have curves in them.
Q: Is your family supportive
of this?
A: I don’t think they all know
my talent. But, yea, except the
injuries.
Q: Tell me about the spon
sorships. Who are they with?
What are they for? How did

at ACS to train students in MIND,

students are trained in mind by
our excellent teachers. They are
trained in manners by the
“family” atmosphere in learning
to get along with others and
show courtesy and respect. The
students get the best moral
training in Bible classes and
chapel.
Parents are instructed in the
Bible to “train up a child in the
way he should go” - the right

parents that we are here to help
them with that admonition.

they come about? What do you
do?
A: My sponsors are: Fluid,
Dedicated Athlete, Warrior
Extreme Sports, Fuel Clothing,
GrindKing, Osiris Shoes,
Freestyle Watch Co., Fringe,
Sullen Clothing, and Extreme
Wreckage Skateboards.
They are for clothes, skate
hardware and decks, drinks
and shoes. They sent me offers
through email and Loopd.
I advertise for them. Use
their stuff and support them.
I also enter competitions
through them. Major opportu
nities. Free stuff and support.
It’s amazing for adults to tell
you they are happy to have you
on their team.
Q: What do you want other
skateboarders to know about
these opportunities? How do
they find out more?
A: I would definitely work
on sponsorships. They (other
interested skaters) need to
contact the companies directly
through email or a phone call.
They all should have an ath
letes department.
Q: What kind of competi
tions are you in? Where are
they? What do you win?
A: I haven’t competed lately
because I have been very busy.
But I competed when I was
with a friend at Woodward
skatepark. You win different
things from money to clothes
and skate decks. I want to
compete a lot more often then
I do, but my parents have a
huge say in that. I have won
online awards for best skate
video on one of my sponsors’
teams. That was cool. I think
the award is still on my loopd
site.
Q: Is skateboarding a sport
that can grow with you? Is it
something you can continue to
do for years to come? Do you
plan to? What are your future
plans?
A: Yea. You have to love
the sport 100%. If you don’t,
you really can’t succeed or
get good. You could definitely
do it the rest of your life. You
just need to stick with it and
practice every day. I do (plan
to continue), yes.
It is my life. I want to still
skate. Enter competitions and
build my name. I want to be a
paramedic and be able to work
at skateparks and help people
who get hurt.
A friendly reminder
O VER the
holidays,
we had
a variety of guests
in our home. Most
were extended fami
ly members, but a
few were general
acquaintances and
friends. When greet
ing one of my dear
est friends at the
front door, I acknowledged
how I couldn’t believe it had
been a whole year since I had
last seen her.
She corrected me, saying
that it had actually been three
years since we had last seen
one another. I not only felt
embarrassed, but ashamed,
especially since we live only
30 minutes apart. How could
I have gotten so busy and
wrapped up in life that I had
neglected one of my dea
rest friends for three whole
years?
She agreed that with us
both having families, care
ers and pets, amongst other
things to take care of, that it
was just as much her fault as
it was mine.
With this in mind and the
new year upon us, I decided
that I should make a new reso
lution. In the past, my New
Year’s resolution has always
been to never make any New
Year’s resolutions, so for me
this was a commitment!
Like most people, I used
to promise to diet, exercise
and eat right — for the first
few weeks of the new year,
at best — but this resolution
sherri
Stephens
is one that I hope to
keep. Once a month
I plan to have friends
for dinner. No matter
how busy I am, nor
how thick the dust
gets — company is
coming!
I got the idea from
my own family. We
are blessed to have a
large extended fami
ly. Every Sunday, the majority
of the crowd used to drop
in for Sunday lunch at my
Grandmother’s house. After
Grandmother passed away, it
really made us appreciate the
memories we created sitting
around the table eating and
chit-chatting about our lives.
Last January, we all came
to the agreement that once
a month we would meet for
Sunday lunch at my aunt’s
house. All 35 of us mark
it on our calendars and the
majority usually show up.
Every three months, we also
get together to eat cake and
celebrate birthdays.
Of course, we now live
in a world in which we can
communicate in a number
of different ways. Emails
are nice, as well as phone
calls and letters, but sit
ting down face-to-face and
enjoying good company is a
real treat.
Just a friendly reminder...
maybe spending more time
with family and friends can
be your New Year’s resolu
tion, too!

Jackson resident.
