THE JACKSON County
Panthers continue to try to
break the slide they've been
in since December 30. The
hopes of breaking the run of
bad luck didn't come true last
week, as the streak extended
to five losses as the Panthers
fell first to Stephens County,
then to Franklin and Oconee
Counties.
The next chance for the
Panthers will come on Friday,
as Jackson County travels to
Covington to face the Eastside
Eagles.
The Eagles have been the
winners in the last two meet
ings of the two teams, first in
December of 2004, and again
in December of 2005.
Tip-off on Friday is sched
uled for 8:30 p.m.
On January 9, the Panthers
traveled to Stephens County
to face the Indians. Jackson
County gave Stephens a run
for the win, but in the end, it
was the Indians coming away
with a 65-50 victory.
Joseph Smith led the
Panthers in scoring against the
Indians with 30 points. Smith
also went 19 of 21 from the
free throw line on the night.
Nick Oney scored 13 points,
while Jonathan Baxter had 13
rebounds on the night.
Next up for the Panthers was
a Tuesday night trip to Franklin
County, where Jackson County
hoped to turn things around
with a contest against the
Lions.
But the Lions, with a 13-3
overall record, entered the game
undefeated in the region.
They left that way as well, as
they pulled off a big 68-32 win
over the Panthers.
Will Wolter led the Panthers
in scoring with nine points,
while Joseph Smith scored 8
points and Nick Oney scored
six.
Things went better for the
Panthers on Friday night, as
they hosted the Warriors of
Oconee County. Things looked
good for Jackson County, as
they led a good portion of the
first half of the game. But they
found themselves in a hole in
the third quarter, and began to
fight back. The Panthers were
down by nine points with four
minutes left in the game, but
were unable to close the gap,
as Oconee County won 45-31.
Smith led in scoring with 11
points. Juice Harrison, who
is playing with a brace on his
tom ACL, scored eight points.
Harrison will have surgery for
the injury at the end of the
month.
Oney scored six points
against the Warriors.
The Panthers were scheduled
to host Hart County Tuesday
night. Results of that game
were unavailable at press time.
JCCHS continued from IB
Pittman said that while the team is not totally
in a hole as far as region play at this point, the
remaining games are going to be more and
more important.
“You want to try to have as good a seeding as
you can,” he said. “ Looking across the region,
at this point, Franklin County seems to be a
little bit above everybody, and then Stephens
County, but everybody else, to be honest, who
knows who will win? All the rest are pretty
even.”
Pittman said that realistically, his team is
only five plays away from having a 3-3 record
rather than 0-6.
“We’re just hoping that lady luck can turn
over, and we can do well in these last eight
region games. I feel really good about all
eight of them. We've just got to come out and
play well and do things right, and we’ve got a
chance.
“We’ve just got to continue to play hard and
relax and do the things that we’re capable of
doing, and I think we've got a chance to win.”
Jackson County was scheduled to host Hart
County on Tuesday night. Results from that
game were unavailable at press time.

JCCHS finishes in the top eight at state
By Brandon Reed
IT WAS a solid showing for the Mat Panthers
of Jackson County over the weekend, as they
placed in the top eight at the state Dual
Tournament in Macon, with the team going 2-2
on the weekend.
The meet started out on a high note, as
Jackson County took the win over Westover
46-21 to open up the meet. The second round
proved to be a little more difficult, however, as
the Panthers fell to Lafayette 51-17.
“We had a couple of close matches against
Lafayette,” said coach Jason Powers. “For
state seeding purposes, it was a great match
for us.”
Jackson County then moved to the consola
tion bracket, where they defeated Lagrange,
then went on to face Heritage.
That’s where the weekend came to an end
for the Panthers, as Heritage picked up a 41-26
victory.
“It could have been a lot closer,” Powers said.
“I had to bump a couple of kids around, and
gambled a little bit and came up short. If we
would have played it safe, we would have lost
something like 38-31, but there was no reason
to play it safe and lose. You might as well try to
gamble and see if you can't come out big, but
we came out a little short. But that put us in the
top eight, so it was a good tournament for us.”
Ryan Howe went undefeated on the week
end, including a win over the number two
wrestler in the state in his weight class. Kevin
Spicer also had a successful weekend, losing
only one match to the returning state champion
from Heritage, 10-6. Izzy Carillo-Garcia also
went undefeated on the weekend.
Now the focus for the Mat Panthers turns
back to the traditional format, with the section
als and state meets on the horizon.
“We have basically two weekends that we
have individual tournaments to try to get the
focus back at individual instead of being at
dual,” Powers said. “We’ll work to get kids
back at the weight class they’re supposed to be
at rather than bumping them around.”
Powers said he doesn’t expect the transition
to be an extremely difficult one, as the team has
been facing some tough competition in the last
few weeks.
“I think they’ve been growing individually
along with as a team. Now it's just a change up
to keeping the kids at weight, and making sure
they get criteria going into the sectionals and
into the state tournament.”
The Mat Panthers were scheduled to travel
to North Hall on Tuesday to face North Hall,
Johnson and Banks County. Results of that
meet were unavailable at press time.
Jackson County will next travel to Social
Circle on Saturday to take part in the Redskin
Rumble.
