Community outreach to award scholarships
JACKSON COUNTY
Community Outreach plans
to award $10,500 in schol
arships to local high school
graduates this spring.
JCCO is in the process
of distributing applications
for nine $ 1,000 scholarships
to the four high schools in
the county, the Regional
Evening School and the
Jackson County Adult
Learning Center.
The winners will be gradu
ates who meet the JCCO cri
teria and who have applied
to or been accepted by a
college or technical school.
Each qualified applicant
will be interviewed.
The $1,500 Dr. Tom
Lewis Scholarship will also
be awarded to a recipient
deemed to have demonstrat
ed outstanding leadership
qualities. The scholarship is
named after a former pastor
of Commerce Presbyterian
Church, who was a found
ing member of the JCCO
board.
Awards will be presented
at each school’s Honors
Day program. Since it began
offering scholarship, JCCO
has given away $59,500 in
scholarships.
The application deadline
is March 20. Applications
should be mailed to JCCO,
P.O. Box 746, Commerce,
GA 30529 by the respective
school counselors.

West Jackson Middle seeking ‘Hero Readers ’
WEST JACKSON Middle
School is looking for “Hero
Readers” to visit its school
on Read Across America
Day on Monday, March 2.
Read Across America cel
ebrates the joy of reading
and the school is adding to
that reading in the work
place.
The school wants vol
unteers to visit and read
a favorite short story, pic
ture book or poem to the
students, and share how
important literacy is to their
profession.
Visitors may select their
own reading or the school
will suggest some motiva
tional pieces that can be
read to students. Visitors
will be reading to small
groups.
“Children who read fre
quently are better readers
and students,” according
to Emily Pendergrass, a
teacher at the school. “Your
modeling this will promote
literacy at all levels.”

will work with the sched
ules of the volunteers, who
will be recognized in a

Brookshire accepted to Middle Georgia College
MIDDLE GEORGIA
College has announced
that Kayla Brookshire
of Hoschton was accept
ed to the college’s pres
tigious Georgia Academy
of Aviation, Mathematics,
Engineering and Science
(GAMES).
Brookshire is the daugh
ter of Robert and Sherron
Brookshire, and she is a
student of Jackson County
Comprehensive High
School.
GAMES is a residential,
joint enrollment program
for top-performing high
school juniors and seniors
that allows them to receive
their high school diplo
mas and college associate
degrees simultaneously.
GAMES Director Lisa
Whitaker said the program
is in its twelfth year, and
its purpose is to provide
an academically enriched
learning environment in
aviation, mathematics,
engineering, science, com
puters and health fields to
selected students who are
motivated to accelerate
their high school and col
lege education. However,
students of all majors of
study are welcome in the
GAMES program.
Garmon makes ABAC dean’s list

GEORGIA College
and State University,
Milledgeville, has named
several local students to the
president’s list or dean’s list
for fall semester.
Arwen Blane, South
Jackson, was named to the
president’s list.
Named to the dean’s
list were: Katie Huston,
South Jackson; Michael
Christopher, Jefferson;
Christy Clark, Jefferson;
and Phetsada Mounnarath,
Jefferson.
Students who complete
courses with exemplary
marks are named to either
the president’s list or dean’s
list at the university.
WJMS ACADEMIC BOWL TEAM TRAVELS TO ATHENS
The West Jackson Middle School Academic Bowl recently traveled to Athens to com
pete in a tournament. Though facing intense competition, West Jackson prevailed
over teams from Stephens County, Hart County and Prince Avenue School. Shown
are: Britt Phillips, Cristain Benjamea, York Delloyd, Cal Tolbert, Nicole Passmore,
Richie Coulthurst, and Zack Bloomquist. The coaches are Abigail Shealy and Jason
Benton.
