THE WEATHER played
havoc with several teams last
week, including the Jefferson
boys' soccer team.
Inclement weather forced
the cancellation of last
week’s games against Union
County on Monday and East
Jackson on Saturday.

THE JEFFERSON tennis
teams continued their early
strong showing, as both
improved their records to 2-0
with victories over Lakeview
Academy last week.
For the boys, they defeated
Lakeview 6-1. Zach Bost
won 6-1 and 6-4 at number
one in singles, while Chase
Lindsay won 6-0 and 6-3
at number three. The num
ber one doubles team of
team that came into the pair
ing with a 4-1 record.
That stretched to 5-1 with
a 2-0 victory that went into
overtime.
“We had a couple of key
injuries which prevented
us from putting much of
a scoring threat together,”
said coach Jon Breedlove.
“However, our defense hung
in there tough and gave us a
chance to win.
Matt Buchanan and Aaron
Martin won 4-6, 6-1 and 6-0,
while the number two team
of Trevor Castellaw and
Stephen Chambers won 6-3,
6-7 and 6-1.
Meanwhile the girls won
5- 0 over Lakeview. Bell
Blankenship won 6-3 and
6- 0 at number one in singles,
while number two Jessica
Johnson won 6-1 and 6-2,
and number three Miranda
McGarity won 6-0 and 6-1.
“This was a good experi
ence for my players, and we
look forward to playing them
again.”
The Dragons were sched
uled to host Union County
on Tuesday. That game was
canceled due to the weather.
Jefferson will next travel
to Oglethorpe County to face
the Patriots on Friday. Game
time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Ashley Etchison and
Colby Fowler won at number
one in doubles 6-3 and 6-3,
while number two Kristine
Chambers and Mariah Yates
won 6-2 and 6-0.
The girls were slated to
play Monday against Prince
Avenue Christian, but that
match was postponed due to
weather.
Both teams are next
scheduled to travel to North
Oconee on Thursday.
IT WAS a trophy-winning
season for the Lady Panthers
at West Jackson Middle
School.
The team was dominant on
the court, closing its regular
season 13-0 and then rising to
16-0 after postseason play.
This marks the third consec
utive season that the girls bas
ketball team at West Jackson
has taken the main stage -
winning the championship in
2007, and then taking home
the second place trophy in
2008 after losing to Oconee.
This year, Oconee took
home that second place tro
phy.
“Our team demanded an
upgrade on the trophy,” said
West Jackson’s girls basket
ball coach Lori Cato. “We
were ready to turn in the sec
ond-place trophy for a first-
place one.”
During the week of the
tournament, the coach said
she would give the girls a
different quote each day.
Most of these quotes she said
were from Vince Lombardi.
The last quote that they heard
before taking the court against
Oconee was a quote that Notre
JCCHS TENNIS
Dame has hanging in their
locker - “Play like a cham
pion, today.”
Cato told the girls that if
they play like a champion for
four quarters then they will
be a champion at the end of
the game.
The team had played
Oconee earlier in the season,
managing just a three-point
victory.
“We knew that they would
be an improved team, but so
were we,” said Cato.
The coach said the team
held challenging practices to
prepare them for every game
- wall-sits, sprints, long dis
tance running and plyometries
were all part of the team’s
routine.
“Our practices were very
difficult,” said Cato. “Many
players would quit in a heart
beat; instead, this team would
be laughing and be good-spir
ited during these demanding
practices.”
“We worked really hard,”
said Savannah Roncadori,
one of West Jackson’s team
captains. “And throughout the
season we have become more
of a team.”
“These players were dedi
cated to the hard work that is
required to be a championship
team,” said Cato.
The coach said she was
blessed to have been associ
ated with such an amazing
group of middle school girls,
five of whom will be headed
to the high school this year.
“Winning the champion
ship game means a lot to us
because it is our last year
in middle school,” said Vic
Fontana, also a team captain.
“And we had the pleasure of
doing it with a great team and
a great coach.”
“It is amazing going unde
feated and going to the cham
pionships in our last year of
middle school,” said Sarah
McMillan, also a team cap
tain.
“We will definitely miss
those girls, but they have such
a bright four years ahead of
them at JCCHS,” said Cato.
The five remaining players
have the ability to keep up
the tradition of WJMS bas
ketball.
“I look forward to another
amazing season with them
next year,” Cato said.
