PARK AND RECREATION
STATE RUNNERS-UP
The 10U Jefferson Dragon girls finished as the runner-up in the GRPA District
7 Class C Mite Girls State Tournament held this past weekend in Jefferson. The
Dragons, Coached by Steve Perry and Mac McEver, worked their way through the
first two rounds of competition before falling to a formidable Rabun County Wildcat
squad in the Finals. The Dragons will continue their run this weekend as Jefferson
Parks & Recreation hosts the GRPA Class C Mite Girls State Tournament. The
Dragons kick off Round 1 action against the Bremen Blue Devils at the Jefferson
Sports Complex.
CITY CHAMPS
The Jefferson Parks and Recreation Department 10 and under Girls recently won
the City Championship after going 13-0 during the season and in the playoffs. The
Dragons defeated teams from Winder, Carrollton, Jefferson and Barrow County to
claim the Championship. The future Dragons outscored the competition 270 to 103.
This was the second consecutive year that this core group of girls has won it all.

JCCHS continued from IB
a two RBI single from Moates, an RBI single
from Robinson, and an RBI from Rob Williams
to win 11-6.
Elrod went 3 for 5, Williams was 2 for 3 with
two doubles and an RBI, while Sticher had two
hits and a doubles. The Panthers also saw six
hits and seven RBIs from five freshmen and
sophomores.
Larry Evans recorded the save on the
mound after relieving winning pitcher Austin
Robinson. Evans struck out seven in three
innings. Robinson struck out six, giving up
three hits and six runs, with only two of those
earned.
“I was very happy with our offensive pro
duction today” Fountain said. “We've hit the
ball well so far. We've got to continue to be
patient at the plate and aggressive on the base
paths. When you do those things, you can
make things happen.”
Fountain said that while the Panthers only
made three errors on the game, the Patriots
made them pay for each one,
“They were very scrappy. They only had
nine base runners the entire night, but found a
way to get six of them across the plate.”
Fountain said he was also very pleased with
the pitching performance that was turned in.
“We’ve still got everybody on a pitch count,
so to get through seven innings on only two
arms is always a good thing at this point of
the year.”
The Panthers were slated to face Rabun
County on Saturday, but that game was post
poned due to rain, and will be made up on
March 13. Monday’s game against Hebron
Christian was postponed due to snow.
Jackson County was scheduled to host
Oglethorpe County on Tuesday. Results of
that game were not available at press time.

East Jackson season ends with loss to Coosa
By Brandon Reed
AFTER A long season that
saw the East Jackson boys’
basketball team make their
first appearance in the AA
state tournament, the Eagles’
season came to a close on
Saturday with a loss to Coosa
in Rome.
The Eagles entered the
tournament as the number
three seed from 8-AA after
winning seven of their last ten
games. East Jackson had also
defeated Union and Rabun
counties last week in region
tournament play.
But their post-season play
stopped Saturday when East
Jackson came up on the short
end of a 65-54 final score.
Kolby Gilbert led the team
in scoring against Coosa with
14 points, while Terry Cox
scored 10.
The loss leaves East Jackson
with a 15-14 overall record to
end the season.
“The bottom line is we did
not make the shots we needed
to and every time we got it
close they made the plays
and we did not,” said coach
Brian Turner. “They also hurt
us on the boards with their
size and our lack of boxing
out. I believe our effort was
good but we just did not do
the things we needed to do to
come out with a victory.”
Turner said his team had
gone through a lot during the
season, including the loss of
sophomore Brandon Garrett,
who was injured in a traffic
accident just days before the
game.
“The guys on the team
took it very hard but we just
kept fighting and scraping
all year,” Turner said. “This
is a testament to our five
seniors.”
Garrett was able to leave
the hospital on Friday.
“I went and spent sometimt
with him Saturday morning
before leaving for the game,’
Turner added.
Turner said he hopes tha
the younger players on the
team will take the lead anc
work harder in the off-seasor
to build toward the future.
“We lose a lot of our ke)
pieces this year but I am con
fident that our young kids
will step it up next year anc
in the years to come.”
Turner said he wanted tc
thank the fans for their sup
port, as well as the team';
five seniors, Kolby Gilbert
Terry Cox, Kaharie Beasley
Zach Gilbert and Standricl
Stephens, for their hard worl
and dedication.
“(They) have put our pro
gram in a position to con
tinue and improve with (their
effort and attitude.”
