JHS recognizes Jan. 3D Award winners
JEFFERSON HIGH
School has named the
“3D Award” winners for
January. Recognized are
Cain Thurmond, 12th grade;
Melody Trippe, 11th grade;
Hoytes Damons, 10th grade;
and Eden Starnes, ninth
grade.
The 3D Student of the
Month Award is part of the
JHS incentive program and
is awarded monthly to four
students - one per grade level
- based on dependability, dedi
cation and diligence. Students
are nominated and chosen by
JHS staff and those selected
get lunch off campus with the
principal and assistant princi
pal, a T-shirt, photo recogni
tion in the school lobby and a
certificate of recognition at the
honors brunch.
THURMOND
Cain Thurmond is the son of
Phil and Susie Thurmond.
He is Student Body presi
dent, Georgia FFA state vice
president and FFA chapter
president, and is involved in
Total Person Program, Beta
Club, Y-Club, FCA and the
First Georgia Bank Board of
Directors.
Thurmond has been named
for the Algebra/Geometry
Award, Young Owl Award,
perfect attendance, “Best All
Around” and Mr. JHS. He is
a seven-time JHS blue card
winner.
Thurmond said his favorite
classes are agricultural edu
cation and math. He plans
to attend Abraham Baldwin
Agricultural College or the
University of Georgia and
major in animal science.
“I plan to go to vet school
at UGA in hopes of some day
owning my own veterinary
clinic,” he said.

DRAGON AWARD WINNERS

JCCHS READING BOWL PLACES FIRST
The reading bowl team from Jackson County Comprehensive High School competed
in the Eastern Division of the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl on February 7 in Augusta.
With a team of only three players going against full teams of ten, they came away
with the victory. The team will now go on to the regional semi finals at S.E. Bulloch
High School on February 21 for a chance to make it to the state finals in March.
Due to illness and scheduling conflicts, team members Robin Hope and Cheyenne
Proctor were unable to attend. Team members Amanda Seden, Sam Cagle and
Sarah Kline are shown here with their trophy. Not pictured are their coaches Lindsey
Labarge and Andrea Waldrip.

Melody Trippe is the daugh
ter of Charlton and Sarah
Trippe.
She is a member of the
yearbook staff, FBLA, Total
Person Program and Interact
Club.
Trippe was named for the
May 2008 3D Award and had
the highest average in 10th
grade literature, citizenship,
web design and algebra II.
Her favorite classes are
literature, computer-related
courses (digital design and
production and web design)
and health-related sciences,
and said she looks forward to
taking health occupations and
anatomy as a senior.
Trippe plans to attend
Gainesville State College for
two years and then transfer to
a larger school, possibly UGA,
to become a registered nurse.
DAMONS
Hoytes Damons is the son of
Sabrina Damons.
He is involved in football
and basketball and is an All
Region football player.
Damons said his favorite
classes are math and weight
training.
He plan to go to college to
play basketball or football.
STARNES
Eden Starnes is the daughter
of Mark and Vicki Starnes.
She is involved in volley
ball, basketball and track.
Starnes earned a JHS blue
incentive card her first semes
ter.
Her favorite classes are
health, biology, language arts
and math.
Starnes plans to go to medi
cal school and obtain her doc
tor’s degree.
PLACES FOURTH
Shae Whisnant placed fourth in the FBLA Leadership
Conference held on Monday, Feb. 2. She represented
East Jackson Middle School.
EJMS STUDENTS NAMED TO HONOR BAND
Three East Jackson Middle School eighth grade students were recently named to
the 2009 Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) District 13 Middle School
Honor Band. They are (L-R): Steven LaRose, alto saxophone; Stephen Bramblett,
tenor saxophone; and Nicholas Whitmire, bassoon. “Congratulations go out to these
three young men,” EJMS band director David Van Buren said. “They each success
fully passed a very competitive audition process and represented our community at
the district band weekend, held February 13-14, at the Georgia Baptist Conference
Center in Toccoa.” More than 800 students auditioned in December for the event and
200 students were selected to participate.

Schools, Commerce City
Schools and Jefferson City
Schools will be taking appli
cations for the next school
year through April 17, until
3 p.m. Applications are
available at all elementary
schools.
Each school is limited to a
number of children in the pro
gram. There will be a drawing
to determine which students
will be enrolled. All parents
will be notified by mail.
Applicants for the Georgia
Pre-K program must be age
4 on or before September 1,
2009, live in the attendance
area of the school they are
applying for and have a certi
fied birth certificate.
