Storm damage reported at area parks
TWO COUNTY recreation
parks were damaged due to the
snow storm that covered Jackson
County on Sunday.
At the Lamar Murphy Park in
Jefferson, the overhead netting
system that helps to protect visi
tors from foul balls was ripped
away from the cable system that
holds the netting up. Some of
the backstop poles were also
pulled away from the support
poles that hold the backstops up.
“The cable net system had
to be cut down, the netting was
destroyed and now we have to
repair the backstop poles and
replace the net system,” officials
report.
At West Jackson Park in
Hoschton, the overhead netting
and cable system fared better
mainly due to the snow amounts
being less.
“We have one backstop that
needs to be repaired and a small
section of the netting that needs
to be replaced,” officials said.

structural damage, only a few

suffer any damage.
East Jackson Park in
Nicholson, which is under con
struction and set to open up later
this month, did not suffer any
damage.
“We have begun the clean up
of all of the facilities,” officials

weekend and the new overhead

Toyota cutting back employees, pay

Facing declining sales
and with no expectations
of improvement in the near
future, SET will reduce its
workforce by 110 at its pro
cessing plants in Jacksonville
and Commerce.
“The automotive industry is
facing its lowest levels in 40
years and analysts do not pre
dict an upturn in the foresee
able future,” said Bob Moore,
vice president and general
manager of SET vehicle pro
cessing. “As a result, we are
adjusting our organizational
structure to align with the
current market and signifi
cant declines in the number of
vehicles we process.”
To achieve the reduction,
SET has offered volunteer
severance packages to its 173
hourly production workers
with the goal of enticing 31
to accept.
“If we get more than 31
takers, we will base our deci
sion on tenure,” Moore said.
“If we get less than 31, we
will need to implement some
mandatory separation pack
ages.”
The supervisory staff was
offered the same options, with
the goal of reducing it by two
persons, Moore said.
The announcement was
made Monday, Feb. 23.
Employees have until March
25 to make a decision.
The pay cuts were
announced Tuesday. They
range from four to 10 percent,
with lower-wage employees
receiving smaller percent cuts
and higher-level employees
the greater amounts, Moore
explained. Some entry-level
wages were not cut.
One person on the admin
istrative staff was laid off
Tuesday.
The severance package
includes “a generous sepa
ration package, outplace
ment assistance and extended
health benefits,” Moore said.
SET processed 145,000
vehicles in 2007. That figure
dropped to 104,000 in 2008,
and projections for 2009 are
90,000, according to Moore.
“The good news is that
one of the measuring sticks
of manufacturing success is
market share,” Moore said.
“Fortunately, we are gaining
market share. Our hopes are
that when the larger numbers
return, we’ll still have that
larger market share of a big
ger market.”
SET is a subsidiary of JM
Family Enterprises, which is
eliminating 500 jobs due to
the automotive sales slump.
Moore pointed out that
industry-wide in North
America, the number of new
vehicles sold has dropped
from 16 million a year to a
projected 10.5 million.
County to provide Hoschton animal control
BY KERRI TESTEMENT
HOSCHTON WILL soon
have animal control service pro
vided by Jackson County.
The city’s lack of state-man
dated animal control came to
light when a stray cat scratched
a young girl in Hoschton on
Jan. 29.
Later, a wound on the child
became infected and her doc
tor became concerned about it,
according to a police incident
report.
Hoschton police said the cat
needed to taken for rabies test
ing, but Jackson County Animal
Service refused to come into
the city limits because the city
didn’t have a contract for its
services.
The girl’s family later con
tacted the Governor’s office
about the incident and state
officials then called Hoschton
about the lack of animal control
service.
Mayor Bill Copenhaver
said Jackson County will pro
vide animal control service in
Hoschton at no cost to the city.
“They are willing and will
take over animal control for us,”
he said on Thursday.
The Hoschton City Council
approved an ordinance refer
encing Jackson County’s animal
control ordinance on Monday,
and it agreed to sign an inter
governmental agreement with
the county for animal control
service.
