School News
Rotary names February ‘Students of the Month’
THE JEFFERSON Rotary
Club has announced the
February “Students of the
Month,” including: Hannah
Bridges, Jackson County
Comprehensive High School;
Shaniqua Johnson, East Jackson
Comprehensive High School;
Mariah Porras, Jefferson High
School; and Javon Womack,
Commerce High School.
BRIDGES
Hannah Bridges is the daugh
ter of Sidney and Suzanne
Bridges.
Her current classes include
trigonometry, food science,
floral design and aerobics.
Bridges is involved in FFA,
Beta Club, Love Always, the
Parliamentary Procedure Team
and the Nursery Landscaping
Team. She has been named to
the National Honor Society.
Bridges has been included in
the top 10 percent and top 15
percent of her class. She has
been named for Panther Pride,
Panther Pawsitive and leader
ship awards.
Bridges chose Jay Borden
as her most influential teacher.
She plans to attend King
College and then transfer to
the University of Georgia to
get her doctorate in veterinary
medicine.
Bridges’ future plans include
“becoming a veterinarian,
opening my own clinic and
raising a family.”
JOHNSON
Shaniqua Johnson is the
daughter of Harold and Sonia
Green.
Her classes include advanced
placement history, AP psy
chology, economics and youth
apprenticeship.
Johnson is involved in
HOSA Club and History Club
and has been named for UGA
Upward Bound and National
English Honors Society.
She is in the top 10 percent
PORRAS
of her senior class and had the
highest score on the Georgia
High School Writing Test.
Johnson chose Denise
Backus, AP history teacher,
as her most influential teacher.
She plans to attend Georgia
Southwestern State University
of Clayton State University
and to earn her master’s degree
in nursing to become a nurse
practitioner.
PORRAS
Mariah Porras is the daugh
ter of Max and Mabel Porras.
Her classes include AP
human geography, AP chem
istry, economics and 12 th grade
literature.
Porras is involved in Beta
Club, Interact Club and
Spanish Club and is active in
varsity cross country and soc
cer.
She has been named the
“Most Valuable Offensive
Player” for the 2008 soc
cer team and was chosen as
“Athlete of the Week” for cross
country. She is a member of
the Spanish Honor Society.
Porras chose Lane Guzman
as her most influential teacher.
JOHNSON
WOMACK
She plans to attend Mercer
University and major in biol
ogy.
WOMACK
Javon Womack is the son of
Dana Rice.
His classes include psychol
ogy, weight training, trigonom
etry and government.
Womack is in the marching
band; during football season,
he is also on the varsity foot
ball team. He is a member of
Commerce Leaders and Super
Students, is a peer mediator,
is senior class president, is
an associate at Nautica, is a
drummer at his church and is a
part-time music producer.
Womack is active in football
and track.
He has been chosen as
the “Most Talented” Senior
Superlative, is captain of the
varsity track team, and was
named the January “Employee
of the Month” at Nautica.
Womack chose Elaine
Roller, school counselor, as his
most influential teacher.
He plans to attend The Art
Institute of Atlanta and wants
to be a music producer.

During Jefferson Elementary School’s Math Game Night, second grade teacher
LeeAndra Vaughn led a math game as parents looked on.
MR. AND MISS JCCHS
Jackson County Comprehensive High School seniors, Lyndsey Adams and Kevin
Spicer, were selected by the faculty as Mr. and Miss JCCHS.
GRAND CHAMP
Jennifer Martin of the Jackson County 4-H Club won Grand Champion Steer honors
and junior showmanship at the JEMC Quality Beef Show.

six Northeast Georgia coun
ties, 76 young people gath
ered to compete for awards,
ribbons and cash prizes at
Jackson Electric Membership
Corporation’s 40th Annual
Quality Beef Show. Together,
they entered 121 animals in
the competition held recent
ly at the Jackson County
Comprehensive High School
livestock center.

4-H won Grand Champion
Steer honors.
In showmanship, Landis
Seagraves of the Jackson
County 4-H won the Novice
category; Martin won the
Junior category, and Steven
Cooper, of the Jackson County
FFA, won Intermediate cat
egory.
In the heifer competition,
Cody Smith of the Jefferson
FFA won the Hereford Breed
Champion (Class II), as
well as the Breed Reserve
Champion (Class I), in the
same category.
In the Angus breed,
Samantha Allen of the
Jackson County FFA won
home the Breed Champion
title, and Christa Royster of
the Jackson County 4-H won
the Breed Reserve Champion
category.
Cody Parr of the East
Jackson County FFA won
Shorthorn Breed Champion.
Cooper won the Simmental
Breed Champion (Class III);
and also took honors for the
Simmental Breed Reserve
Champion (Class I).
Taylor Schieszer of the
Jackson County FFA won
the Limousin category, and
Jackson Schieszer of the
Jackson County 4-H won the
Breed Reserve Champion.
In the Other Heifer Breeds
category, Cindy Cooper of the
Jackson County 4-H won both,
the Breed Champion (Class
IV) and the Breed Reserve
Champion (Class III).
In the Commercial field,
Courtney Cash of the Jackson
County 4-H won Champion
Commercial Heifer, and S.
Cooper took honors for the
Breed Reserve Champion.
Young people competing in
the Quality Beef Show use
the experience and judge’s
feedback to help prepare for
the upcoming statewide com
petition in Perry.
“There is no entry fee
for this competition. The
kids have the opportunity
to win prizes and get point
ers from the judge to help
them improve their animals
and skills, so everyone comes
out a winner,” said Randall
Pugh, Jackson EMC presi
