JHS GOLF
Jefferson boys face Oconee Co. Thursday
By Brandon Reed
MARK BOTH the Jefferson Dragons boys
and girls golf teams down as a 1-1 for the season
after taking on the Buford Wolves at Pine Isle
Golf Course.
The boys fell to Buford 177-192.
Senior Cody Smith led Jefferson by shooting
a 43. It was Smith’s first match since the end of
basketball season.
Also scoring in the top four were Austin
Rowland and Nick Stowe, while Michael Baker
and Josh Flowers tied for fourth.
The girls were led by senior Jennifer Brueshaber
in a match that was shortened to only eight holes
due to darkness. Brueshaber shot a 38, while
Hanna Chapman shot a 50 as the Lady Dragons
managed to even their early season record.
Both teams were slated to face Winder-Barrow
Tuesday at Chateau Elan. Results of that match
were unavailable at press time.
On Thursday, the boys are scheduled to travel
to Double Oaks to face Oconee County. Both
teams will be back in action at Traditions against
Hebron on March 17.
Dragons continued from IB
runner across in the top of the seventh, but
they would get no closer as Jefferson went on
to win 10-3.
Jamie Sexton recorded the win from the
mound, giving up only two runs and seven
hits while striking out three in five innings.
Caleb Meek went 2-4 at the plate with two
runs. Sexton went 2-2 with a run, a double
and an RBI.
Jason Demos went 1-3 with a run, and
Jake Fields went 4-4 with three runs and two
RBIs.
Navas continued from IB
apply,” he said. “We do not have a set time
line at this point; we are simply looking for the
best fit for Jefferson City Schools, the football
program and the entire Athletic Program as a
whole. While we are looking for the right fit,
we also feel we have a lot to offer to potential
candidates.”
Navas said that the support from the commu
nity and from the school board was one of the
things that made the program work.
“Our success was a direct partnership with
our school board and our community. The
school is committed to excellence in all facets,
and the community is as supportive as they can
be. They allowed me to build a program and
persevere through some tough years for us to
prosper. That kind of partnership is rare in the
high school football arena.”
During the seven years that Navas served as
head football coach for Jefferson, he led his
team to the post-season seven times, and three
times made it to the second round. He was also
named the 2008 8-AA Coach of the Year.
But Navas said his greatest memory from his
time at Jefferson would be of the relationship
he had with his players.
“I’m very attached to the kids I’ve coached.
No one victory or anything stands out to me.
It’s just the many memories I’ve had with those
kids that stands out to me.”

THE JEFFERSON track and
field team is scheduled to get
their season under way today
(Wednesday), as they’ll play
host to Oglethorpe County
and Commerce beginning at
4:30 p.m.
After finishing as runner-up
in Region 8-A and seventh
at the Georgia Olympics in
2008, hopes are high for the
Dragons as they enter into
their 2009 schedule.
“It’s certainly early, but we
expect to be ‘in the mix’ in
late April or early May,” said
coach Tim Corbett. “I’ve
been pleasantly surprised by
our team. We are not great
in number, but we have about
30 strong that are proving to
be hard working and com
mitted. If we stay focused on
the process and keep our final
goal in mind, we could wind
up with a solid performance at
season’s end.”
Corbett said his team has a
little more depth than in recent
history, which should allow
them to be able to experi
ment a little more and perhaps
find some hidden talent in the
team that might otherwise go
unnoticed.
Among the members of last
year’s team that are returning
for 2009 are Wesley Milton,
Tyler Porter, Judson Stewart,
Derrick Perkins and Virgil
Appleby.
Corbett said that while there
are a number of newcomers
competing for spots in the indi
vidual events and the relays, he
is looking for several upper
classmen to play a vital role
in the team’s success, includ
ing senior Zac Crosby, junior
J.J. Damons, and freshman
Michael Stephenson, along
with about 15 sophomores
and freshmen that round out
the team.
Corbett says there are sev
eral things his team will have
to contend with this year.
“Region 8AA is quite dif
ferent than it was a year ago,
but will prove to be tough
nonetheless,” he said. “I
expect each of the teams to
have some strong individuals,
but North Oconee, Riverside
and Oglethorpe may prove to
be the teams to beat. East
Jackson is new, but they have
some talent.
“As is typical of most
Jefferson teams, we will work
to make sure we are competi
tive in the field events, hurdles,
relays and distances. We’re
not the most athletic bunch,
but we will work hard. We set
our season records Wednesday
and go forward from there.”
JHS SOCCER
Dragons to face East Jackson Thursday
By Brandon Reed
IT WAS a mixed bag for
the Jefferson soccer teams last
week, as they first traveled
to Oglethorpe County, then
played host to Social Circle.
Both teams had problems
with Oglethorpe last Thursday.
First, the girls lost to the Lady
Patriots 4-2. Then the boys
found themselves on the los
ing end of a 5-0 score.
“Oglethorpe is a strong team
in area 16,” said boys’ coach
Jon Breedlove. “We did not
EJCHS BASEBALL
play well in about a 10 minute
span of time, and before we
could turn around they were
up five goals to none. We had
a hard time generating any
offense, but we did hold them
scoreless in the second half.”
The Jefferson teams
returned home on Monday to
host Social Circle. It was a
good pairing for the girls, who
won 4-0.
Individual statistics were
unavailable at press time.
The boys had a strong run
against Social as well. After
some mistakes in the first
half allowed three goals to be
scored on them, the Dragons
offense got going in the sec
ond half, with Hugo Tello
scoring for Jefferson. In the
end, it was Social Circle com
ing away with a 3-1 victory.
Jefferson will next travel
to East Jackson to face the
Eagles on Thursday. Game
time for the girls is sched
uled for 5 p.m., with the boys
match slated to start at 7 p.m.
East Jackson falls to Lakeview
THE EAST Jackson Eagles
were hoping to shake off the
cold from the last week’s
snowy weather with a strong
showing against Lakeview
Academy.
It didn’t work out that way,
as Lakeview picked up a con
vincing win over the Eagles.
Next up for East Jackson is
their first region game of the
season, this time coming on
the road against Oglethorpe
County.
Oglethorpe entered play
on Tuesday still looking for
their first win of the season.
First pitch in Lexington is
scheduled for 5 p.m.
LAKEVIEW
The tone of Thursday’s
game was set early. After
going scoreless in the top
of the first, the Eagles saw
Lakeview strike first in the
bottom of the inning, as the
third batter for the Lions hit
a two-run homer.
After that, however, East
Jackson’s Sam Williamson
stood his ground on the
mound, striking out eight
of the first 11 batters for
Lakeview.
A pair of errors in the third
gave the Lions the opportu
nity to add two more runs to
their total. Lakeview went
on to add runs in the fourth
and fifth inning.
In the sixth, the Eagles put
their first two runs of the
game on the board to close
the score to 6-2. But a three
run bottom of the sixth for
the Lions put the game away,
as they won 9-2.
Williamson recorded the
loss, striking out 11 while
he allowed seven runs and
four hits.
Hunter Beck, Nick Keyros
and John Robinson led the
Eagles in hitting, while
Brandon Brooks reached
base twice.
East Jackson coach Josh
Gandy said his team has
come a long way defensively
so far.
“The kids are starting to
understand the fundamentals
of the game,” he said. “At
the plate we are working
very hard on hitting with a
purpose but we are not where
we need to be. I am happy at
the moment with the effort
the boys have put into the
game.”
East Jackson was next
scheduled to host Elbert
County on Tuesday. Results
of that game were unavail
able at press time.
