Jackson County falls to Franklin Co.
By Brandon Reed
AFTER SEEING several
matches cancelled due to last
week's snowy weather, the
Jackson County soccer teams
were looking to heat things
back up when they traveled to
Franklin County last Friday.
Unfortunately, things didn't
go as hoped.
First, the girls lost 3-0 to
the Lady Lions, who came
into the game with a 4-3
record.
The loss dropped the Lady
Panthers to a 2-1-1 record.
The boys were handed a
loss as well, as they fell 5-1,
making their record 1-3 for
the season.
Both teams were scheduled
to host Eastside on Tuesday.
Results were unavailable at
press time.
Next up, Jackson County
will host Monroe on Thursday.
The girls' match is slated for
a 5:30 p.m. start, with the
boys scheduled to start at
7:30 p.m.
JCCHS GOLF
Panthers go 2-1 to open the season
By Brandon Reed
THE JACKSON County boys' golf team has
started the 2009 season off on a strong note.
So far, they are 2-1 with victories over East
Jackson on February 25 and Commerce on
Feb. 26.
Their lone loss so far came at the hands of
Stephens County, who won 194-200.
Rodney Price was the low scorer in each
match, while Ben Waldrip was second each
time.
With some golfers missing early on, the first
two games were much like playing warm-up
matches for all three teams, according to coach
Warren Standridge.
“I think the East (Jackson) match was a six
hole match,” he said. “We got in all nine holes
with Commerce. I am pleased with our prog
ress so far and the men are working hard.”
The Panthers were slated to face Franklin
County on Monday, and Winder and Jefferson
on Tuesday. Results of those matches were
unavailable at press time.
Jackson County is scheduled to take on
Dawson County today (Wednesday), and then
face Buford and Banks County on Thursday.
JCCHS continued from IB
Devin Elliott recorded the
loss, going 3 1/3 innings and
giving up eight hits and four
runs. Williams came on in
relief, striking out seven and
giving up one hit.
The loss leaves the Panthers
2-2 on the season.
“I was very pleased with
the day,” said coach Tommy
Fountain. “I thought we
played fairly well in both
games. Nine walks killed
us against Clarke Central, as
did the two costly errors in
the sixth inning. However,
we fought back and Rob had
a huge at bat for us with
his grand slam. We were a
matter of inches away from
tying the second game. If
their shortstop hadn’t made an
unbelievable play at the end
of the game, we might still be
playing or Rob (Williams) or
Ken (Miller) might have came
up with a big hit.”
Fountain said his team is
still hitting well, and doing
the small things they need
to do.
“We even executed
a squeeze bunt in the first
game,” he added. “I also
thought Florentine did a tre
mendous job in the first game
throwing strikes with all of his
pitches. We're going to need
him to continue that the rest
of the year.
“We’ve got a long week
ahead of us this week and
we've got to keep playing
good baseball to give us a
chance to win each game.”
The Panthers were sched
uled to travel to Dacula on
Tuesday to face Hebron
Christian Academy. Results
were unavailable at press
time.
