Electric vehicle rally ahead March 21
AN ELECTRIC vehicle
team from Jackson County
Comprehensive High School
will participate in the upcom
ing Georgia EV Rally planned
for 8 a.m. Saturday, March
21, at Abraham Baldwin
Agricultural College, Tifton.
In 2008, the team placed
third in the state. The JCCHS
team will enter this year again
under the leadership of Cary
Lepzelter. The public is invit
ed to attend and see local
students participating.
Team members will test
their driving skills and the
efficiency of their student-
built vehicles in three driving
events: acceleration, auto
cross and range. Their under
standing of electric vehicle
technology will be tested in
a troubleshooting event and
they will exhibit public speak
ing expertise in oral presenta
tions. EV teams will demon
strate academic knowledge in
a Science Quiz Bowl.
“What has impressed the
teachers who have partici
pated in the electric vehicle
competitions has been the
diversity of interests that
come together in these team
efforts," said Alan Shedd, one
of the founders of the EV
Education Program. “We’ve
had band members, students
who excel in science, math
and physics, as well as stu
dents who have a natural
mechanical talent...This pro
gram motivates students to
be excited about learning and
exploring, both in an aca
demic and in a hands-on set
ting. It shows how real-world
applications of what is taught
in the classroom can acceler
ate the learning process.”
