Jefferson defeats Commerce
By Brandon Reed
AFTER A strong week
that saw wins against Banks
County and Commerce, the
Jefferson Dragons go into play
tied for first in the region.
Jefferson has a 7-1 region
record, while North Oconee
is 7-2.
The lead could be decided
this (Wednesday) afternoon,
as the Dragons travel to North
Oconee to face the Titans.
First pitch is slated for 5:55
p.m.
BANKS COUNTY
The Dragons got their
week off to a strong start last
Tuesday, as they played host
to the Leopards of Banks
County.
Jefferson came on strong
out of the box, taking a three
run lead in the bottom of the
first. Banks County would
get one run across in the top
of the second, but was then
held scoreless for the rest of
the game by Jefferson's Chris
Beck.
The Dragons would tack on
JHS SOCCER
three more runs in the bottom
of the fifth, and go on to win
6-1.
Beck gave up only four hits
in seven innings, striking out
12 in the process.
Jamie Sexton went 2-3 at
the plate, scoring one run and
one RBI, including a double
and a home run. Lucas Redd
went 1-3 with a run and an
RBI including a homer. Tyler
Bailey went 1-2 with two
RBIs. Caleb Meek went 1-3
with an RBI.
COMMERCE
Next up for Jefferson was
a non-region pairing with
their in-county rivals, the
Commerce Tigers.
The Dragons got on the
board first, getting a run across
in the bottom of the second to
take the lead. While two more
runners would get across, one
in the fourth and another in
the sixth, the Dragons' pitch
ing staff worked to hold the
Tigers to a one hit, scoreless
game. In the end, Jefferson
came away the victors, 3-0.
Chris Swancey recorded
the win, giving up one hit
and striking out 10 in three
and one-third innings. Jamie
Sexton pitched for just over an
inning and a half, setting down
six Commerce batters. Jake
Fields came in for an inning,
with Chris Beck recording the
save by closing out the game
on the mound.
Beck also went 1-3 at the
plate scoring one run. Sexton
went 1-3, Fields went 1-3,
Kyle Hardy went 1-2 and
Lucas Redd went 2-2.
Coach Tommy Knight said
Jefferson’s pitchers made the
difference in both games.
“Against Banks Chris Beck
threw a complete game and
was dominant against a good
hitting team. The Commerce
game was a little different.
We had four different pitchers
combine for a one hitter."
The Dragons were slated to
face Oglethorpe County on
Monday, but that game was
postponed due to inclement
weather.

Mladin Sweeps AMA Doubleheader at Road Atlanta
ON THE GO
The AMA Pro Racing tour, pictured here from a previ
ous event, raced into Road Atlanta recently.
IN A dominating per
formance at Road Atlanta,
Australian Mat Mladin swept
both events in last weekend's
AMA American Superbike
double-header.
First, the six-time AMA
champ led wire to wire on
Saturday, leading every circuit
in the 20-lap, 50-mile race, win
ning by 15.717 seconds over
his teammate, American rider
Tommy Hayden. Gainesville's
Geoff May finished third, with
American riders Blake Young
and Josh Hayes rounding out
the top five.
Then on Sunday, Mladin
turned in another dominating
performance, starting on the
pole and leading every lap to
score his 14th victory on the
Braselton road course.
Mladin’s only blemish of the
weekend came during practice
earlier in the day on Sunday,
when he crashed at the end of
the back straightaway. Mladin
avoided injury and he didn’t
miss a beat on the repaired
machine.
“I had a bit of a tumble this
morning and the guys got the
bike back together,” he said.
“Everything felt as usual and
normal for the race. It was
a good race for us. We had
a bit of a crack for 10 or 12
laps. I was trying to figure out
around lap 10 or 11 whether I
should keep pushing and the
boys get a bit nervous when I
do that. I pushed my luck one
too many times today already,
so I decided to have a bit of fun
at the end.”
Young edged out May for
second, with Hayes and Aaron
Yates rounding out the top
five.
In the co-headline Daytona
SportBike race on Saturday,
Colombian rider Martin
Cardenas scored his first motor
cycle race victory in America.
He won by .501 seconds ahead
of Roger Hayden.
In Sunday's Daytona
SportBike, Danny Eslick
claimed his third victory in five
races this season. Argentine
Leandro Mercado won the
SuperSport class race for riders
between the ages of 16 and 21.
