BRASELTON’S SHANE
Sawyer put on a commanding
performance Saturday night, as
he led the most laps en route to
taking the victory in the ASA
Matt Hawkins Memorial 100
at Lanier National Speedway.
Sawyer led early, control
ling the pace for the first half
of the event. The only bobble
came when he found himself
caught up in lap traffic, allow
ing Pendergrass’ Paul Kelley
and Cleveland's Jason Hogan
to slip by just after the half
way mark of the event.
A series of cautions gave
Sawyer an advantage, as a
two-wide restart allowed him
to reclaim the lead after a
caution. Sawyer would lead
the last 22 laps and take the
victory.
Hogan made a last lap
pass on Kelley to claim the
number two spot. Michael
Lance finished fourth, while
Commerce’s Lee Langford,
who had won the pole for the
event, finished fifth.
Thirteen-year old, second
generation racer Chase Elliott
placed sixth, Jeff Choquette
finished seventh, Commerce’s
Taylor Satterfield was eighth,
Jeremy Mullinax placed ninth
and Tyler Millwood rounded
out the top ten.
Other area finishers includ-

JCCHS faces Hart County Wednesday

THE JACKSON County
soccer teams are scheduled
to wrap up area play this
week.
Both teams faced off
against Stephens County on
the road Monday. For the
boys, it was their third loss
in a row, as they fell 8-0 to
the Indians. The loss leaves
the Panthers 4-8-1 overall,
and 1-5 in the area.
For the girls, it was a 6-1
loss to the Lady Indians,
leaving Jackson County
8-4-1 overall, and 2-4 in the
area.
The boys were sched
uled to face East Jackson
on Tuesday. Results were
unavailable at press time.
Both teams travel to Hart
County today (Wednesday)
for their last regular season
match.
The girls are slated to start
at 5:30 p.m., with the boys
match scheduled for a 7:30
p.m. start.
JCCHS continued from IB
The Panthers were never able to recover,
as the Bulldogs added one run in the fifth off
reliever Larry Evans, and two more runs in
the sixth to end the game early with a 13-3
final.
“I was as disappointed in Saturday night as
I’ve ever been,” said coach Tommy Fountain.
“You’ve got to tip your hat to Hart County,
because they came prepared to play, but we
knew what was on the line, as far as a leg
up on the playoff race, and we came out and
played terrible. On Wednesday, we sim
ply didn’t match up very well with Oconee
County, but we matched up well with Hart
County. We’ve emphasized to the guys that
to get to where we want to be this year, we’ve
got to play well against the teams we match
up well with. This is the second time this year
we didn’t do that, and now we’re in a big hole
in the region.”
Fountain said the Panthers are still trying to
figure some things out with their pitching.
“Some guys that started the year throwing
pretty well have gotten into a little rut,” he
said. “We’ve given up double digit runs in
our last four games in a row. That’s never
acceptable. Two of those games are some
what attributed to poor defense, but we’re also
not getting ahead of batters right now and that
causes you to have to throw certain pitches in
situations where the batter has a good idea
what's coming. And for our young pitching
staff, that’s not a good thing.
“We’re effective when we can work back
wards and throw three of our pitches consis
tently for strikes at any point in the count.
Right now, we’re not doing that.”
The Panthers entered the week 5-9 overall,
and in a three way tie for fifth place in the
region, trailing Hart County by two games.
Jackson County was slated to face Cedar
Shoals Monday night, but that game was
rained out.
The Panthers were scheduled to host Elbert
County on Tuesday. Results of that game
were unavailable at press time.
