County airport topic for Woman’s Club
THE JACKSON County
Airport can very well be “an
economic engine” for Jackson
County.
Some corporations which
have expressed an interest in
locating in the county say they
are awaiting completion of
the current runway extension,
and that is expected by July 1,
says Shannon Sell, chairman
of the Jackson County Airport
Authority.
The runway will be extended
500 feet, providing 5,100 feet of
usable runway. In addition, there
will be two taxi-ways, said Sell
when he spoke at the Jefferson
Woman’s Club’s April meeting.
Cost of the five-year effort
is around $3 million, with $1.7
million coming from a state
grant and $1.2 million from
“entitlement” funds.
Future plans call for purchas
ing adjoining land which could
be used for individuals or corpo
rations to build their own hangars
and for infrastructure additions.
Sell said there are no fire
hydrants at the airport but that it
is being served by two wells and
the authority is looking at hook
ing to the county water system.
In response to a question about
noise, the chairman said there is
no noise from the small planes,
which are all that use the airport.
Jet noise would be regulated by
the Environmental Protection
Department, he added.
Although the airport is no lon
ger the base for Life Flights,
such service is available from the
North Georgia Medical Center
in Gainesville and that is only
four minutes by air from Jackson
County, said the speaker.

CHAMPIONS... Congratulations
to the ACS boys and girls track
and field teams, both of whom
won the tough Region 8-A
championships held at Athens
Academy. This marked the fifth
straight for the boys and 3 out
of the past 4 for the girls. They
now advance to compete for
the state title.
These fine young men and
women and their coaches
worked very hard this spring,
and they were all quite thrilled
to come out on top.
We are thankful for the
opportunity to work with parents
in training hundreds of students
in mind, manners, and morals.
We are also thankful that we
can offer many extra-curricular
activities in athletics, music,
speech and art.
