Jefferson High School ROTC members presented the colors at the annual Jackson
County Law Enforcement Memorial Service held on Wednesday, May 13. Sheila
Parnell (C) sang “God Bless America” at the event held at Living Word Worship
Center, Jefferson.
TWENTY-ONE GUN SALUTE
Members of the Jefferson Police Department’s Memorial Honor Guard presented
the 21 gun salute at the 2009 Jackson County Law Enforcement Memorial Service
on Wednesday, May 13. The annual event was held at Living Word Worship Center.

WIRTHMAN SPEAKS AT MEMORIAL SERVICE
Jefferson Police Chief Joe Wirthman addressed those in attendance at the 2009
Jackson County Law Enforcement Memorial Service on Wednesday, May 13. The
event, held at Living Word Worship Center, Jefferson, was held in observance ol
National Police Week May 10-16. Wirthman said during 2008, 133 law enforcement
officers were killed. In 2007, there were 60,000 assaults on police officers, Wirthman
said.

THE FOUR Teachers of the
Year were recognized by the
Jefferson Board of Education
Thursday afternoon.
They are: Kathy Chandler,
Jefferson Elementary School;
Jean Conner, Jefferson
Academy; Roger Bright,
Jefferson High School; and
David Cuddy, Jefferson
Middle School and system-
wide recipient.
Students honored at the
BOE meeting included: Caleb
Moore, essay contest winner;
Colby Fowler and Lindsey
Edwards; state FBLA win
ners; and ROTC drill team
and color guard members
who placed at the national
competition.
In other business at the
BOE meeting on Thursday:
•Tom Beggs, band boost
er club president, presented
information on the middle
school and high school band
programs.
•the financial report was
presented and it shows a loss
of $915,132 in state funding
this school year. “We’ve done
well to get through this year,”
said BOE chairman Ronnie
Hopkins.
•it was reported that the
June meeting will be held at 4
p.m. on June 9.
•the auditorium was
removed from the rental pol
icy.
•agreed to spend $16,875 to
refinish the high school gym
floor.
•accepted the following

Sandy Akin, a mathematics
teacher at EJCHS, was one
the 10 finalists for the state
honor.
Gwen Desselle, a 32-year
veteran educator from
Colquitt County, was named

There were 147 district
teachers of the year that sub
mitted applications to become
the 2010 Georgia Teacher of
the Year.
The applications were
read by a panel of judges
that included teachers, past
Georgia Teachers of the Year
winners and finalists, admin
istrators, community leaders
and others. Ten finalists were
chosen based on the strength
of their essay responses.
A panel of judges that
included the 2009 Georgia
Teacher of the Year, and others
observed each finalist in their
classroom and interviewed
them at their schools. The ten
finalists then gave speeches
at the annual Teacher of the
Year luncheon, sponsored by
Georgia Power.
No state funds were used
for the Teacher of the Year
banquet. It was paid for
through private donations and
ticket sales.
