Aldi to locate at Dry Pond area
ALDI GROCERY store
is looking at locating a
large distribution center in
Jefferson.
The site for the 780,849
square foot distribution center
is on 85 acres off of Hwy. 82
at the Dry Pond exit, accord
ing to Jefferson city manager
John Ward. The property
is already zoned for light
industrial, however, a DRI
study is being done by the
Northeast Georgia Regional
Development Center because
of the size of the project.
The project calls for
482,223 square feet to be ini
tially developed with a future
expansion of an additional
298,626 square feet.
Speed zone ordinance gets Pendergrass OK
By Brandon Reed
THE PENDERGRASS City
Council voted Tuesday night to
approve a continuation of its
current speed zone ordinance
with the state department of
transportation.
By law, the city has to re
approve the ordinance every two
years. As part of the process,
officials from the Pendergrass
police department will check for
the correct signage in each speed
zone in the city.
There were no changes made
to the ordinance, which was re
approved unanimously.
Also on Tuesday's meeting,
the council heard the monthly
library report. During the month,
the library saw 166 patrons, with
78 computer users. There were
two adult programs held with a
total of nine attendees.
The library recently received
22 books from the “We The
People Bookshelf, Picturing
America” grant through the
American Library association.
The council also learned that
the Friends of the Pendergrass
Library was recently awarded
a $2,000 grant from Jackson
EMC. $1,399 was spent on
Children's books, and $600 was
spent on Young Adult books.
Audit continued from page 1A
fully computerized system and away from
manual accounting.
• Another finding in the audit was that the
Plainview Fire Department had obtained
a loan in 2008 without voter approval as
required by state law. Auditors said govern
ment agencies have to structure such bor
rowing as leases, not long-term debt.
•Several county departments and agen
cies have direct sources of income, but
are subsidized by general funds. In 2008,
those departments and their subsidies were:
E911, $290,800; Ambulance, $1.9 million;
Keep Jackson Beautiful, $51,300; Planning
and zoning, $461,300; Parks and recre
ation, $878,700; and senior citizens center,
$238,500.
• Taxes continue to make up most of the
county's revenue. Property taxes made up
41 percent in 2008 while sales taxes made
up 27 percent.
• The county’s tax digest grew in 2007,
funding the 2008 budget with an extra $3.4
million in property taxes.
• Public safety and judicial continue to
make up the majority of county spending at
27 percent each for a total of 54 percent of
county expenses.
