Thursday, May 21, 2009.
Born December 16,
1977, he was the son of
Joycelyn Howard and the
late Gregory Howard Sr. He
attended Commerce High
School and was a member
of Mt. Calvary Missionary
Baptist Church. He was a
joy to all that knew him and
loved him, brought a smile
to the heart of many by
simply flashing that “golden
smile,” was always ready
and willing to do whatever
he could to help anyone,
and was known as the life of
the party, loved ones stated.
Mr. Howard was preceded
in death by grandparents,
John (Bookie) and Aileen
Rollins, Joe Rich and Ruth
Howard.

his mother, include a sis

Tallahassee, Fla.; brother,

on April 1, 1922, she was
the daughter of the late
Betty Jackson. She was a
member of Barbers Creek
Baptist Church.

an extended illness.
Born in Oconee County,

Heaton Marcus. He was
retired from WebCo as a
welder with 38 years of
service and was a mem
ber of the Maysville United
Methodist Church. Mr.
Marcus was preceded in
death by a sister, Maebelle

Marcus, Houston Marcus
and Tommy Marcus. In his
spare time, he enjoyed deer
hunting, fishing with his
grandchildren, wood work
ing, and gardening, loved
ones stated.

Mathis, 78, died Friday, May
22, 2009, at her residence.
A native of Jackson
County, she was a daughter
of the late Lon and Minnie
Burt Lee. She had resided
in Barrow County most of
her life and was a member
of Bethabra Baptist Church.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her hus
band of 60 years, J.C. Mathis

He was a lifelong resident

Robert Odom
WINDER - Robert
Harden Odom, 82, died
Thursday, May 21, 2009.
Born in
Chatham
County, N.C.,
he was the son
ofthelateChafinA. andlrene
Harden Odom. A member of
the St. Anthony’s Episcopal
Church, he became a mem
ber of Winder Lions Club
on October 1, 1959, and
had perfect attendance for
45 years. He served as past
president and held various
other offices. Mr. Odom
was a long time cook for
the bi-monthly meetings,
where his signature dish
es were fried chicken and
strawberry shortcake. He
was a World War II Navy
Veteran and a teacher for
30 plus years. A gradu
ate of Bradwell Institute
in Hinesville, Teacher
College’s of Statesboro, and
received his masters from
the University of Georgia.
He was past president of
Jug Tavern Senior Citizens
Golf Association. Mr. Odom
was preceded in death by a
brother, Albert Odom; and
sister, Mae O. Whittle.
Survivors include his
wife, Maggie Odom; daugh
ter, Barbara Odom; daugh
ter and son-in-law, Becky
and Kenneth Rogers; grand
children, Rusty and Casey
Rogers, all of Winder;
brother, Alton C. Odom,

Adolph and Helny Petterson
Pettersson. He

Baptist Church
in Miami, Fla.,
was a jet engine overhaul
supervisor, having retired
from Eastern Airlines, and
was a United States Navy
Veteran, having served as
a chief petty officer during
World War II.
Survivors include his

Neil Peterson, Miami, Fla.;
daughters, Reah Peterson
Black, Royston, and Christal
Peterson Figueredo, Miami,
Fla.; nine grandchildren;

“Cotton” Sisk, 84, died
Thursday, May 21, 2009,
following an extended ill
ness.
Born on January 27,
1925, in Banks County,
she was the daughter of
the late Nando and Lizzie
Westbrook Cotton and was
the last of 15 children. She
lived in Hall County for
51 years and retired from
Leece-Neville with 28 years
of service. Mrs. Sisk was
preceded in death by her
husband, William Sisk; and
a number of brothers and
sisters.
Survivors include daugh
ters and sons-in-law, Vanissa
and Donald Carver, Flowery
Branch, and Bonnie and
Grady Smith, Lula; sons
and daughters-in-law,

“Jim” Smith, 84, died

A native of
Oglethorpe
County, he
was the son
of the late C.A. and Corrie
Venable Smith. He was
retired from General Motors
after more than 30 years of
employment, and in 1989
returned to Madison County
to live. He was a veteran,
having served in the United
States Army during World
War II. Mr. Smith was pre
ceded in death by his wife,
Mary Grace Young Smith.
Survivors include chil
dren, Donna Durham,
Conyers, and Buddy Smith,
Covington; a sister, Blanche
Wilkins, Oglethorpe County;
brothers, Bob Smith and
Gaines Smith, both of

Born on December 22,
1939, in Banks County, she
lived in Gainesville most
of her life, and worked at
Pirkle’s Cafe as a cook for
many years. Mrs. Sullens
was preceded in death by
her parents; and a sister,
Lucille Baker.
Survivors include sons,
Ron Sullens, Clarkesville,
and Harold Sullens,
Gainesville; a brother, J.C.
Smith, Bentonville, Ark.;
five grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; and a
number of nieces and neph
ews.

Rev. ‘Jack’ Tatum
DEMOREST - Rev.
Robert “Jack” Tatum, 92,
died Friday, May 22, 2009,
at his residence at Magnolia
Demorest.
Born on
March 26,1917, in Palmetto,
he was the son of the late
Robert D. and Florence
Jackson Tatum, and was pre
ceded in death by his wife,
Martha Edna Tomlinson.
He was a graduate of
Mercer University, Macon,
and the Southern Baptist
Theological Seminary,
Louisville, Ky., and was
ordained as a Baptist min
ister by the Rahmah Baptist
Church in Palmetto in 1937.
Churches he served include
the Clarkesville Baptist
Church, Clarkesville, First
Baptist Church, Cornelia,
First Baptist Church,
Buford, Prince Avenue
Baptist Church, Athens, and
the Crawford Avenue Baptist
Church, Augusta. Following
his retirement, he served
as interim pastor of several
churches in Habersham and
Stephens County. During
World War II, he served
as a United States Army
Chaplain in the European
Theater. Following the war
he served in the United
States Army Reserves, retir
ing as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Survivors include a niece,
J ane T. Washington, Newnan;
and a nephew, David E.
Tatum Jr., Palmetto.
Memorial services were
held Sunday, May 24, at the
Bethlehem Baptist Church
with the Revs. Tommy
Stowe and Furman Lewis
officiating. Burial was in the
church cemetery.

Vernon, 86, died Friday,
May 22, 2009.
Born in Okanogan, Wash.,
on September 9, 1922, she
was the daughter of the
late Rev. Owen and Alta
Beadles. She and her late
husband, Charles, lived in
Jefferson for 35 years before
moving to Florida. She was
a graduate of the University
of Idaho and worked for
the American Red Cross
during World War II as a
home caseworker. She was
a retired social worker for
the Georgia Department
of Family and Children’s
Services, was a member of
the First United Methodist
Church of Jefferson,
the Quilters, the United
Methodist Women, the
Esther Circle, and the Stan
Escoe Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Vernon was preceded
in death by her beloved hus
band of 62 years; a son,
David R. Vernon; and sis
ters, Delores Jaquish and
Joyce Adams.
Survivors include a
daughter and son-in-law,
Betsy and John Harrington,
Leesburg, Fla.; grand
daughters, Suzanne (Lane)
Godsey and Jessica Vernon,
Arden, N.C., and Kathleen
Gurley, Atlanta; grandsons,
Ben (Elizabeth) Vernon,
Charlotte, N.C., and Alex
Gurley, Flowery Branch;
and a great-granddaughter,
Lillian Ruth Godsey.
Memorial services will be
held Thursday, May 28, at
the First United Methodist
Church in Jefferson with
the Revs. David O. Beadles
and Robert Reynolds offi
ciating. Burial will be at
Memorial Park Cemetery in
Gainesville. Honorary pall
bearers will be the Quilters
and the Esther Circle.

Martin. She was a mem
ber of Cornelia Christian
Church, where she served
as the church’s food ser
vice coordinator for many
years, and was retired from
Chicopee Manufacturing
Company with 35 years of
dedicated service.

ters and son-in-law, Laverne
and Efford Loudermilk
and Glenda Hannas, all of
Cornelia; son and daugh-
ter-in-law, Troy and Crete
Ward, Cornelia; sister,
Laurell Shockley, Toccoa;
