Jackson Thunderbirds top in state color guard competition

the Georgia state color guard competition. They
also placed second in academics, and were given

JACKSON County Com
posite Squadron of Civil Air
Patrol recently competed in the
statewide color guard competi
tion at Dobbins Air Force Base.
Jackson brought home third
place overall in the state, second
place in the state in academics
and C/SSgt Andrew Patterson
was named the highest academ
ic achiever in the state. They
also received the Team Spirit
award, which was voted on by
their peers.
The Jackson County
Thunderbird Color Guard per
forms at a variety of commu
nity, state, and local functions.
Before this competition, they
had never competed against
their peers. Going with one
team of four with one alternate,
the Thunderbirds packed their
gear and headed to Dobbins.
“We really didn’t know what
all to expect, but I think it went
really well,” said Color Guard
Commander C/SSgt Jesse
Holcombe.
Holcombe is the Jackson
Thunderbird Color Guard
Commander and bearer of
the United States Flag., Cl
SSgt Andrew Patterson is the
Deputy Commander of Color
Guard, and is a rifle bearer. Cl
SSgt James Ensley is the State
flag or Cap flag bearer, C/A1C
Josh Barber is the second rifle
bearer with C/Amn Cameron
Causer being the alternate for all
positions. C/2nd Lt Haley Kiser,
Jackson County Thunderbird’s
Cadet Commander was the team
coach.
The competition consisted of
several different components,
including, inspection, indoor
drill, outdoor drill, written exam,
panel quiz bowl and physical
training.
Inspection is the correct
wearing of their uniforms, cor
rectly ironed, proper wear of
insignia, and shoes polished
to regulations. Indoor drill is
marching, keeping step, making
turns, using correct commands,
and procedures of reporting in.
Outdoor drill is correct unfold
ing of flag, placing it on the flag
pole, raising and lowering flag,
removing from flag pole and
correct folding and returning the
flag with proper procedure.
The Panel Quiz competition in
round robin disqualification on
questions from modules studied
by all cadets of civil air patrol,
mostly focusing on aerospace.
Written exams covered all mod
ules, leadership and aerospace
from 1-6 and physical training
where every member including
the alternate ran a mile.
Even with the rain, the com
petition continued, ending with
a banquet at the day’s end and
announcement of the win
ners. First place went to Sandy
Springs Squadron, second to
Augusta Composite and third to
Jackson Composite.

your success at GAWG’s 2009
Cadet Competition. I know
that your success is representa
tive of an enormous amount
of dedication and hard work.
Please know that your efforts
are appreciated.”
Jackson Color Guard were
given challenge coins from
the Wing Commander, Col
Jay Hughes, another chal
lenge coin to the Color Guard
Commanders, white cords for
wear on there uniforms show
ing their color guard status, and
certificates of achievement.
“I am very proud of these
cadets, this was our first time
competing in such an event and
we are pleased with our plac
ing,” stated Jackson County
Squadron Commander, Lt Mj
Bridges.

Mondays of the week at 6:30
p.m. at the modular unit adja
cent to the airport terminal,
Jackson County Airport.
Allen graduates from
Coast Guard Academy
CADET FIRST Class Brandt
Allen, Jefferson, recently gradu
ated from the U.S. Coast Guard
Academy with a bachelor of
science degree in management.
During commencement exer
cises, graduates of the class of
2009 received their commission
as ensigns in the U.S. Coast
Guard from Department of
Homeland Security Secretary
Janet Napolitano.
A 2005 graduate of South
Gwinnett High School, Allen is
the son of Don and Julie Allen,
Jefferson.
Allen’s first tour of duty
will be as a flight student at
Naval Air Station Pensacola in
Pensacola, Fla.
“As I transition into the officer
corps and aviation community, I
can only hope that the years
ahead are filled with excitement
and opportunity,” said Allen.
In order to graduate offi
cers of the highest caliber, the
Coast Guard Academy offers an
integrated life experience that
emphasizes academics, physi
cal fitness, character and lead
ership. Graduates go directly
to positions of leadership, and
aviators are obligated to a mini
mum 13 years of active duty
service.
BENEFITS HUMANE SOCIETY
The 185 North Board of Realtors recently held its “Homes
for People and Pets” 5K Run/Walk and 1 Mile Fun Run.
Approximately 100 runners and walkers participated with
some $1,800 raised. The Humane Society of Jackson
County benefitted from the proceeds. The society’s goal
is to prevent neglect, cruelty and exploitation of animals.
They assure that the interests and well being of animals
are fully, effectively and humanely protected by an aware
and caring society. Angela Gosnell (center) is shown
accepting the funds on behalf of the humane society.
NEW ASSISTANT POLICE CHIEF WELCOMED
The Rotary Club of Jefferson recently welcomed the
city’s new assistant police chief Dave Hill (right).
Police chief and Rotarian Joe Wirthman welcomed Hill
to the meeting.
TALKS ABOUT NURSING HOME CARE
Jon Howell — a Jefferson resident and CEO of Georgia
Health Care Association — is shown being welcomed
by Jefferson Rotary Club president Gina Mitsdarffer.
Howell recently spoke to the club about nursing home
care in Georgia.
