WINDER - Marshall Blake
Bowen, 31, died Monday,
June 8, 2009.
He had resided in Barrow
County for all of his life, and
was the son of John Bowen
of Winder and the late Martha
Wilson Bowen. He was pre
ceded in death by a sister,
Sharon Bowen Ruppel. A
member of the Winder First
United Methodist Church,
he was a 1995 graduate
of Winder-Barrow High
School. He was a member
of Boy Scout Troop #700
and achieved the rank of
Eagle Scout. Mr. Bowen was
employed by Diversified
Cabinet Distributors.
Survivors in addition to his
father, include a sister and
brother-in-law, Jennifer and
Chris Antonakos, Cumming;
and niece, Martha McKenzie
“Marty” Antonakos.

Wednesday, June 10, from

Randolph Branch, 81, died
Friday, June 5, 2009, at
Northeast Georgia Medical
Center, following a sudden
illness.
Born on April 15, 1928, in
Jackson County, she was the
daughter of the late John and
Margaret Pace Randolph. She
was retired from Con-Agra
Poultry and was a member of
New Salem Baptist Church.
Mrs. Branch was preceded
in death by her husband, J.C.
Branch Sr.; and a host of
brothers, sisters, nieces and
nephews.
Survivors include daughters,
Marcelle Branch, Bethlehem,
Gail Branch, Gainesville, and
Lollie Hollis, Lithonia; a son,
J.C. Branch Jr., Jonesboro;
granddaughters, Terica
Branch, Suwanee, Aschara
Hollis and Alexis Hollis, both
of Lithonia; sisters, Louise
Randolph and Inez Leverette,

Teasley Brown, 81, died
Friday, May 29, 2009.
Born in Hart County, she
lived in the metro Atlanta area
since the age of 17. She was
the last survivor of 22 chil
dren, and was retired from
Mack Trucks, Inc. with over
30 years of service. She was
a member of the Snellville
United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her hus
band, Wallace G. Brown,
Auburn; children, Wallace
“Ed” and Annette W. Brown,
Auburn, and Donna C. and
Don Beadle, Huntsville,
Ala.; grandchildren, Erica F.
Brown and Adam E. Brown,
both of Auburn, Capt. Beau

Born in Murphy, N.C., she
was the daughter of the late
Blanco N. and Wenona E.
Scruggs. She was a home
maker and was preceded in
death by her husband, Charles
Lindy Christian.

grandchildren; one great

held Thursday, June 11, at
2 p.m., in Smith Memory
Chapel with the Rev. Paul
Moore officiating. Burial will
be in Auburn City Cemetery.

DANIELSVILLE - Joan
H. Cook, 84, died Thursday,
June 4, 2009, at her resi
dence.
Born in Bradenton, Fla.,
she was the daughter of the
late James Henry and Lottie
Fant Harris. Mrs. Cook was
preceded in death by her hus
band, William Milton Cook;
a son, Robert “Bob” Carter;
and brothers, James and Bill
Harris. Moving to Athens in
1954, she became the District
Manager for Avon and may
be better known for working
at the information desk at the
Georgia Square Mall when it
first opened.
Survivors include sons
and daughter-in-law, David
and Debbie Kelley, Houston,
Texas, Bill “L.G.” Kelley,
Comer; daughter and son-in-
law, Beth Kelley and Peter
Zorbanos, Danielsville; and
many grandchildren, great
grandchildren and great-
great-grandchildren.

ATHENS - Reba Lee Epps,
77, died Monday, June 8,
2009, at St. Mary’s Hospital
in Athens.
A native of Athens, she
was the daughter of the late
Guy M. and Lula Campbell
Lee. She was a homemak
er and was a loving mother
and grandmother, loved ones
stated.
Survivors include children,
Dana Epps, David Epps, both
of Athens, Tony (Dawn H.)
Epps, Arnoldsville, Kathy
(Scott) McMahan, Nicholson;
brothers, Reese Lee, William
Lee, Ronald Lee; sister, Edith
Lee; and five grandchildren.

held Thursday, June 11, at 10
a.m., in the chapel of Lord &
Stephens Funeral Home with

officiating. Pallbearers will
be family and friends. Burial
will be at Old Fort Cemetery
in Carlton. The family will

Sarah Etheridge
CARL - Sarah T. Etheridge,
84, died Monday, June 8,
2009.
Born in Gwinnett County,
she was the daughter of the
late Warren and Tempie
Kilgore Tuggle. She was
preceded in death by her
husband, Alfred Garfield
Etheridge, Sr.; and sisters,
Vivian Cagle and Dorothy
Mabry. She was a member of
the Midway United Methodist
Church and played basketball
during her high school years
before graduating in 1942.
After retiring from R & R
Manufacturing Company,
she opened her own clothing
stores in Carl and Winder. She
was a past Carl Town Council
member and served as mayor
of Carl, the first female mayor
in Barrow County. A member
of the Eastern Star, she was a
volunteer at Barrow Regional
Medical Center.
Survivors include a son and
daughter-in-law, Alfred G.
“Terpie” and Rose Etheridge,
Carl; grandchildren, Joey
Etheridge, and Debbie and
Redd Martin; great-grand
children, Kelley Martin and
Kimberley Martin; and com
panion and friend, Grady
Frank Cheely.

Thurmond Garner, 81, died
Thursday, June 4, 2009, at
Landmark Hospital in Athens,
following an extended ill
ness.
Born on August 16, 1927,
in Jackson County, she was
the daughter of the late James
and Rosa Bowles Thurmond.
She was a Christian, and a
member of Westside Baptist
Church, where she was a
Sunday School Teacher and
was active in the senior minis
try. She was employed by the
former Shirley’s and Strong
Brothers at Lakeshore Mall,
and was a seamstress for many
years in the community. Mrs.
Garner was preceded in death
by sisters, Josie Thurmond
and Runelle Luther; brother,
James Thurmond Jr.; and an
infant son, Howell S. Garner.
Survivors include her hus
band of 61 years, Harold
Garner, Gainesville; daugh
ters, Cynthia Garner Millwood
and Regina Garner Blackwell,
both of Gainesville; grand
children, Caleb, Annelise,
Clif, Mark, Bryson and Grace
Millwood, all of Gainesville;
sisters, Latrelle Gilleland,
Buford, Eddie Mae Hogan,
Jefferson, Willie C. Thurmond
and Gayress Spain, both of
Gainesville; and a host of

January 15, 1943, she was
the daughter of the late Julia
Oglesbee Lovvorn and Jasper
Charlie Oglesbee Jr. She was
a social worker with DFACS
with 30 years of service
and was a proud member of
the Living Mission United
Methodist Church. She
enjoyed gardening, recycling,
sewing, but most of all giving
care to those in need, loved
ones stated.

Born on May 3, 1918, in
Tignall, she was the daugh
ter of the late Sam and
Starkie Raiford. She attend
ed Elberton public schools,
and at an early age, joined
Shady Grove Baptist Church
in Tignall, where she served
on the mother board until her
illness. She was employed
with Piedmont Restaurant for
over 10 years. Mrs. Grimes
was preceded in death by her
husband, John “Man” Wesley
Grimes; sisters, Syliva White,
Lina Almond, Darlena
(Maddie) Benjamin, Naomi
Smith; brothers, Aker (AP)
Raiford and Edward Raiford;
sons, Larry Grimes and

and Isebelle Pilgrim Kidd.
She retired from Piedmont
Laboratories and was of the
Baptist denomination. Mrs.
Grizzle was preceded in
death by her husband, Dello
Grizzle; and a son, Paul L.
Thomas.
Survivors include a
daughter, Linda S. Wilson,

in-law, Larry and Barbara
Ann Thomas, Oakwood,

Church. Mrs. Haggard was

Brenda Hutchins Teal.
