LAROSE MARTIN
Month named for May
JHS students earn Spanish honors
BOEHMER
THE JEFFERSON Rotary
Club has announced its Students
of the Month for May: Abbey
Boehmer, Jackson County
Comprehensive High School;
Chelsey Cain, Commerce
High School; Michale LaRose,
East Jackson Comprehensive
High School; and Julia Martin,
Jefferson High School.
Boehmer
Abbey Boehmer is the
daughter of Brian and Susan
Boehmer.
Her classes at the end of
school included trigonometry,
advanced economics, digital
media design and production
and yearbook.
Boehmer was active in yea-
book, FBLA, Beta Club and the
National Honor Society. She
has been named for the Jackson
County Community Outreach
Young Person Award.
Boehmer chose Derelle
McMenomy as her most influ
ential teacher.
She plans to attend
Gainesville State College and
then transfer to the University
of Georgia. Boehmer plans to
major in dentistry or in the
CAIN
healthcare field.
Cain
Chelsey Cain is the daughter
of Kent and Ann Cain.
Her courses for the year
included advanced placement
calculus, AP literature and
composition, AP U.S. history,
AP European history, govern
ment, economics and year
book.
She was academics editor
for the yearbook, Key Club
president, Beta Club secre
tary, Student Council secre
tary and involved in Horizons
and Academic Team. She won
third in state literary meet in
extemporaneous speaking.
Boehmer was the Region 8A
low medalist in golf for 2009.
She was her class salutato-
rian and was named for the
UGA Certificate of Merit and
Presbyterian College Junior
Fellow. Boehmer made the all
A’s honor roll and was a mem
ber of the First Georgia Bank
Junior Board of Directors.
She chose Matthew Dahlke
as her most influential teacher.
Boehmer plans to attend the
University of Georgia to major
in history and/or political sci
ence.
LaRose
Michael LaRose is the son of
Mike and Gloria LaRose.
His courses included bank,
AP calculus, AP microeco
nomics, AP music theory and
advanced English IV.
He was involved in march
ing band, wind ensemble, sym
phonic band, saxophone quar
tet, the orchestra for “You’re
a Good Man, Charlie Brown,”
jazz band, mixed chorale, men’s
ensemble, Science Olympiad
and History Club.
LaRose was active in base
ball and golf.
He was named Mr. EJCHS.
Most Talented in his senior
class and an honor gradu
ate. He received the Georgia
Certificate of Merit and the
Louis Armstrong Jazz Award.
LaRose played first chair
tenor saxophone in the state of
Georgia for concert band and
third chair tenor saxophone in
the state for jazz band.
LaRose chose Jeffrey Rowser
as his most influential teacher.
He plans to attend Kennesaw
State University to earn a bach
elor’s degree in music educa
tion.
Martin
Julia Martin is the daughter
of Stephanie and Bill Martin.
Her classes included AP
British literature, drawing and
painting I, art composition IV
and AP Spanish V.
Martin was active in Spanish
Club, Beta Club, Total Person
Program and the Jefferson
First United Methodist Church
youth group and praise band.
She is library assistant at the
Jefferson Public Library and
is involved in art, music and
reading.
Martin was named to honor
roll. National Spanish Honors
Society and Beta Club. She was
nominated for the Governor’s
Honors Program in art in 2007,
participated in the Scotland
Exchange Program and was an
honor graduate.
Martin chose Lane Guzman
as her most influential teacher.
She plans to attend Berry
College to major in art educa
tion with a minor in Spanish or
religion.
SEVERAL Spanish lan
guage students from Jefferson
High School recently earned
national recognition for
excellent performance on
the 2009 National Spanish
Examinations.
JHS students earned a total
of two gold, four silver and
five bronze medal awards
along with 19 honorable men
tions.
“Attaining a medal or hon
orable mention for any stu
dent on the National Spanish
Examinations is very presti
gious, because the exams are
the largest of their kind in the
United States with well over
115,000 students participating
in 2009,” said Kevin Cessna-
Buscemi, national director of
the exams.
Those students honored
include: KaylaAdams, bronze;
Madyson McKinney, bronze;
Caleb Smith, bronze; April
Surrell, bronze; Christian
Keel, silver; Noah McCarthy,
bronze; Erin Roberts, sil
ver; Alex Looney, silver;
Moises Cazares, gold; Jacline
Griffeth, silver; and Clara
Logue, silver.
The students’ teachers are
Lane Guzman and Ana Diaz.
