Child ID program helps families, American Legion post members learn
MARK BRADLEY — rep
resenting the Georgia Child
Identification Program (GACHIP)
— was the featured speaker of a
recent meeting of the American
Legion Post 56 in Jefferson.
Bradley told those attending that
the National Center for Missing
and Exploited Children reports
that over 1 million children turn
up missing each year.
“That's one child every 43 sec
onds," he said.
Bradley said GACHIP was
developed from a national pro
gram and sponsored by Georgia
Masons to assist law enforcement
officials in the recovery of chil
dren reported missing.
The program works by obtain
ing in advance useful information
that can be used to help identify
a child once the child is reported
missing.
Through GACHIP Masons
throughout the state have the
means to distribute packets to par
ents or guardians who can then
record specific information about
their children, get fingerprints and
photos and a brief video interview
and have them on hand should
any of their children become
missing.
Also, the packet includes a
means of collecting a tooth print
and a DNA sample from each of
the children.
To date, volunteers working at
some 237 GACHIP events have
provided more than 25,000 pack
ets to parents or guardians around
the state, Bradley said adding that
the program did not begin until
Feb. 9,2008.
Post 56 Commander Harvie
Lance introduced the guest
speaker and suggested that the
American Legion post consider
hosting a GACHIP in the future.
Lance also introduced and
inducted James Morris into post
membership during the May
meeting.

Vendors sought for Turbo Turtle Trek, family festival coming up Aug. 8
PLANS ARE under way for the 2009 Turbo
Turtle Trek to be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Saturday, August 8, at Crow’s Lake, Jefferson.
The event kick-off will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday,
June 20, at the first Turbo Turtle Trot 5K Run/Watk
and Fun Run to be held at Jefferson High School
(visit www.raceaturtle.com for more details on the
race and fun run and walk).
The Turtle Trek is a fundraiser for The Tree
House, Inc., an accredited children’s advocacy
center, providing support and assistance to children
and families in Jackson, Barrow and Banks coun
ties.
The Turbo Turtle Trek will once again feature a
free Family Fun Festival. Food vendors are being
sought to sell food and drinks. Currently, food
vendors only are needed. There is a registration
fee of $10 for nonprofit organizations or $25 per
“for profit" vendor. The registration fee for a non
profit organization will be waived, if the nonprofit
volunteers to host an approved children’s activity.
Vendors keep all proceeds from the sale of food or
drink. Space is limited and power sources are mini
mal, so vendors are encouraged to bring alternative
power sources, such as generators.
Interested vendors should contact Donna Butler
at storyteller826@bellsouth.net. The application
deadline for vendor registration is July 18, but
registration will be closed by July 11, if all slots are
filled. Registration is available on a “first-come,
first-served" basis. More information is available
at www.raceamrtie.com
