Rape crisis center seeks volunteers
Training to be held in July
THE PIEDMONT Rape
Crisis will be hosting train
ing for Crisis Advocate vol
unteers during the month of
July.
This training is open to per
sons interested in answering
calls through the 24-hour cri
sis hotline and assisting vic
tims of sexual assault through
the SANE (Sexual Assault
Nurse Examiner) medical
exam and reporting process.
Crisis Advocates spend
most of the time providing
referrals, offering options,
or simply listening when
needed. In the event that a
victim elects to report, the
Crisis Advocate works with
the victim to ensure that his
or her needs are met. Susan
Cash, the Victim Services
Coordinator, instructs the 30
hour training program.
Cash notes, “We are looking
for volunteers who are empa-
thetic and compassionate by
nature. Our Crisis Advocates
are good listeners capable
of providing information
and resources without push
ing someone in a particular
direction. They own positive,
but realistic attitudes and are
committed to helping those
in need. They are equipped
to work with people from all
walks of life and accept and
believe the victim regardless
of her background.”
Joy Strickland, PRCC
Director, offers, “Our Crisis
Advocates meet the victim in
a time of need. They make all
the difference in the world.”
Strickland stresses the need
for reliable Crisis Advocates,
“We are interested in volun
teers who will respond to a
call when they are scheduled
to be available regardless of
the time. Crisis Advocates
work with all sorts of com
munity members and must
be able to maintain absolute
confidentiality. They respect
the caller’s privacy and offer
hope.”
Crisis Advocates work to
empower victims to make
their own decisions regard
ing what is the best route to
healing. Consequently, vol
unteers do not impose their
own opinions or provide
directives.
The Piedmont Rape
Crisis Center offers services
to adult victims of sexual
assault in Barrow, Banks,
and Jackson counties. All
services are free and confi
dential, including the crisis
hotline at 770-586-5423. For
further information regarding
volunteer opportunities, call
Susan Cash at 678-975-7253
