Property improvements, corrections listed
The Jackson County Tax
Assessors office recently
mailed assessment notices
to property owners who had
an improvement or a cor

Values were not increased
this year on the basis of
market value due to a new
law. Values will not increase
for an additional two years
unless a factual change has
taken place.
Another law signed by
the governor requires the

selves to property owners.
The county is divided into
sections based on location.

Airport authority
By Angela Gary
The current runway exten
sion and the improvements
under way at the Jackson
County Airport are expected
to increase traffic at the facil
ity. This has led officials to
look into contracting with a
fixed base operator (FBO) for
the airport.
At a meeting on June 16,
the authority heard from Jay
Abbott, who is interested in
serving as the FBO at the
airport.
“We see long-term oppor
tunity,” Abbott said.
There was some discussion
on whether proprosals would
need to be taken from all
those interested in serving as
the FBO.
considers fixed based operator
No action was taken on
the matter, but the authority
agreed to meet at 1 p.m. on
Wednesday, June 24, at the
airport to discuss the idea
further.
“This is a big step,” author
ity chairman Shannon Sell
said about hiring a FBO.
Also at the meeting, an
update was given on the run
way project. The taxiway and
runway have been graded
and paving is slated to begin
within the next week.
OTHER BUSINESS
In other business at the
June 16 meeting, the author
ity:
•approved a $22,000 bid
from Daniel Repair and
Maintenance for installing a
fuel dispending system at the
airport.
•heard a report on the Nov.
14 fly-in to be held at the
airport in conjunction with
an event at Gresham Motor
Speedway. “I think this has
the potential to be the big
gest tourism event in Jackson
County,” airport manager
Bob Stapleton said.
•approved the payment of
$55,000 to Ace Grading Inc.
for cracked seal repairs. This
is being funded through as
department of transportation
grant.
•met in closed session to
discuss real estate acquisi
tion. No action was taken
when the meeting was opened
to the public.
Chamber membership dips downward
By Mark Beardsley
While it is doing everything
it can to retain members, the
Jackson County Area Chamber
of Commerce continues to see
its membership numbers fall.
Linda Foster, vice president
for member services, pointed
out to the chamber’s board of
directors last Friday that dur
ing May eight new members
joined, but 19 were dropped.
Part of the reason is that the
chamber is for the first time
officially dropping members
who do not renew. But the
economy is also taking its toll.
“We’re doing everything we
can to keep our members, but
it’s tough,” noted Foster.
The good news is that the
chamber’s member retention
rate remains at 82 percent.
That’s down from 87 percent
last year, but well over the
levels reported by many other
chambers of commerce, said
Shane Short, president.
“Some chambers across the
state are at 60 percent,” he said.
He praised Foster and staff
member Sharon Anderson for
keeping local numbers much
higher.
“I think they work real hard
at it and do a good job,” he told
the directors.
Foster provided the direc
tors with lists of members who
have not renewed in 2009 and
asked for their assistance in

The tough times may actu
ally result in more value for
members, however.
Short reported on two new
initiatives designed to help
members.
One is a new health care
plan being proposed that will
offer better coverage and more
flexibility for participating
businesses. Rather than deal
ing with one company with
one set of coverage, the new
proposal — likely to take effect
in December — utilizes six
different companies under one
umbrella.
“As a company, you may
have employees with six differ
ent insurance companies, but
you're cutting only one check,”
said Short.
The chamber will also get a
$2.50 fee for each employee
covered.
“The cost is the same or bet
ter, but the options are just so
much greater,” Short said. “It’s
a new concept. We think it’s
a much better benefit for out
members.”
The other initiative is a
chamber-produced county
map. While Short said county
maps “are the number one most
requested piece of material” at
the chamber office — which
is out of county maps — the
added value will come from the
online version.
People accessing the map
via the chamber's web site (ot
through members’ web sites)
can click on particular services
or business types in which they
are interested, and advertising
businesses in that category wilt
appear on the map.
