EJCHS CROSS COUNTRY
Eagle Run confirms competing teams
By Justin Poole
EAST JACKSON
Comprehensive High School's
cross country team is gearing
up to host its third annual
Eagle Run.
The Georgia High School
Association sanctioned event
is set for Saturday, Sept. 19,
with the races starting at 9:30
a.m. for the boys and 10:15
a.m. for the girls. Junior var
sity teams will also compete
in the annual event, with the
JV races starting after the var
sity races.
EJCHS cross country coach
Bob Roller said there are some
20 teams ranging in classifica
tion from single A to quad-A
registered to compete in the
run.
Among them are several
that sent runners to state dur
ing the 2008 season, including
East Jackson, Banks County,
Dawson County, Buford,
Stephens County, Jackson
County, Elbert County,
Habersham Central and
Clarke Central. This year's
run will also welcome Walnut
Grove, which is a new school
in Walton County.
The top 20 individuals in
the varsity races will receive
medals, as will the top five
from the JV races. The top
five teams in each varsity race
will also receive an award and
the first-place JV team will
receive an award in each race.
According to Roller, favored
to win based on the 2008
season-ending results are the
boys from Habersham Central
and the girls from Jackson
County.
Dragons continued from IB
member will be recognized this year as well.
Like just about every Jefferson wrestler,
Hunter Gamer started young.
“It was the fifth grade, so I was about 11,”
Gamer said.
And, like just about every Jefferson wrestler
in the program’s illustrious history, Gamer was
successful - though he set the bar high even for
a program that is more than use to success.
During his time with the Dragons, Gamer
won four individual state titles and also helped
his team to four traditional and four duals state
crowns.
There is no question that Gamer, along with
his brother Forrest, dominated the prep wres
tling scene during his time at Jefferson, earning
his way into the Northeast Georgia Sports Hall
of Fame’s Elite 10 - honoring the top 10 area
prep athletes from 2000-09.
Gamer claimed state titles at 140 pounds
(2000 and 2001), at 152 pounds (2002) and 160
pounds (2003). He was also named Georgia
Wrestler of the Year after his senior campaign.
Gamer went on to wrestle at Anderson
University, competing in the 165-pound weight
class.
The Northeast Georgia Sports Hall of Fame is
located in the Northeast Georgia History Center
on the campus of Brenau University.
The History Center will recognize athletic
excellence at a luncheon at 11:30 a.m., Aug.
29, at the Georgia Mountain Center in down
town Gainesville. Guest speaker Damon Evans,
athletic director for the University of Georgia,
will help honor 15 Northeast Georgia Athletes
and one highly successful team. There will be
five retired athletes inducted into the Northeast
Georgia Sports Hall of Fame and an additional
“Elite 10” athletes, some of Northeast Georgia’s
best athletes of the last 10 years.
Call the History Center at 770-297-5900 for
more information.
