Emma Lee Bruce, 77, died
Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at
New Horizon West Nursing
Home following an extended
illness.
Born on February 24, 1932,
in Banks County, she was the
daughter of the late Thomas
Frank and Mattie Pauline
Moon Roberts. She was retired
from Fieldale Poultry and was
a member of Eastview Baptist
Church. Mrs. Bruce was pre
ceded in death by her hus
band, John Hubert Bruce; and
brothers, James Roberts and
Gene Roberts.
Survivors include a daugh
ter, Janet Bruce, Gainesville;
sons and daughters-in-law,
John and Elizabeth Bruce and
Jackie and Elaine Bruce, all
of Gainesville; 10 grandchil
dren; a sister, Grace Beckhart,
Gainesville; and brother,
Verner Roberts, Gainesville.

Duncan
COMMERCE - Eric D.
“Buford Heavy” Duncan, 60,
died Wednesday, July 15,
2009.
He was the son of the late
O.D. Duncan and Lora Allen
Duncan Carr of Braselton and
stepfather, the late William
Carr. He was a 1967 gradu
ate of North Gwinnett High
School, was a machinist by
trade, but his passion was build
ing dragsters and racing. He
owned Buford’s Automotive
in Commerce. Over the years
he worked as crew chief for
Jerome Bradford, Gary Brown
and Warren Johnson, and dur
ing this time they each won
a championship. Mr. Duncan
was preceded in death by a
niece, Dana Everett.
Survivors in addition to
his mother include his wife,
Beverly Dobbs Duncan,
Commerce; sister and broth
er-in-law, Florence and Jim
Garmon, Braselton; stepbroth
er, Mike Carr, Pennsylvania;

Charles McDaniel
BETHLEHEM - Charles
N. McDaniel, 81, died Sunday,
July 12, 2009.
Born on May 1, 1928, he
was the son of Bridges and
Leveda Wall McDaniel. He
was preceded in
death by broth
ers, Thomas
and Herbert
McDaniel.
He was raised in Bethlehem
by his grandmother, Jenny
Doster McDaniel, following
the death of his mother when
he was an infant. During the
war at age 14 he worked briefly
in the shipyards at Brunswick
before joining the Merchant
Marines at age 15 for one
tour of duty. Following that
he joined the Coast Guard.
During World War II he served
on Coast Guard Cutters in the
waters off of France and the
Northeast Coast of Canada
and the US. He owned and
operated Holiday6 Grocery in
Winder following his retire
ment.
He was a Mason and Shriner,
was a deacon at the First
Christian Church in Winder,
but in 1980 was ordained
as a New Thought Minister
at the Center for Spiritual
Awareness, and was thus able
to work with alcoholics who
were incarcerated and “ready”
to hear about AA.
Survivors include his wife
of 64 years, Hassie Lee
Stewart McDaniel; daughters
and sons-in-law, Cheryl and
Hank Hilderbrand, Jackson,
Debbie McDaniel, Bethlehem,
and Marsha and David
Gooch, Jefferson; grandchil
dren and spouses, Henry and
Cassie Hilderbrand, Johns
Creek, Jeremy and Lynne
Hilderbrand, Stockbridge,
Chuck and Maureen Gooch,
Bethlehem, and Kellee Gooch,
Nashville, Tenn.; three great
grandchildren; one niece; and
numerous cousins.

Born in Walton County, she
was the daughter of the late
Fred E. and Missouri Austin
Cox. She was a member of
Midway Christian Church and
was retired from the garment
business as a floor supervisor.
Mrs. Morris was preceded in
death by her husband, Leroy
Morris; and a brother, Reese
Cox.
Survivors include a son and
daughter-in-law, Charles L.
and Charlotte Morris; grand
children, Mike Morris and
Patti Faglier; great-grand
children, Drew Morris, Ryan
Morris and Brooke Pitts; and
a sister. Marguerite Mooney,
Winder.

Memory Chapel with the Rev.

was in Barrow Memorial

“Rich” Phillips, 92, died
Monday, July 20, 2009, at
New Horizon Nursing Home
following an extended illness.
Born on March 16, 1917,
in Banks County, she was the
daughter of the late Arnie and
Nellie Sheridan Rich. She was
a retired seamstress and was
of the Baptist denomination.
Mrs. Phillips was preceded in
death by her husband, Fletcher
P. Phillips.
Survivors include a daugh
ter, Marie Phillips Rogers,
Gainesville; brother, Clyde
Rich, Gainesville; grand
daughters and spouses, Lynn
Rogers, Jane and Brian
Bowmar, all of Gainesville,
and Susan and Chuck Titshaw,
Hoschton; great-grandsons,
Kristopher Bowmar and
Matthew Bowmar, both of
Gainesville; and a number of
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will
be held Thursday, July 23,
at 2 p.m. in the chapel of
Memorial Park Funeral Home
with the Revs. James Woods
and Wayne Hicks officiating.

loved to fish, listen to music
and play video games, loved

TOCCOA - J.D. Saylors,
64, died Monday, July 20,
2009, at his residence.
Born on June 14, 1945, in
Hart County, he was the son
of Dorothy Fitzgerald Saylors
of Toccoa and the late J.B.
Saylors. He had lived in
Commerce for 15 years before
making Toccoa his home. He
worked for Stovall Building
Supplies for a number of years,
and loved to garden, read and
cook. Mr. Saylors was preced
ed in death by his wife, Mary
Ellen Fincannon Saylors; a
stepson, Danny Varner; and
brother, Guy Saylors.
Survivors in addition to his
mother include a daughter,
Lori Saylors, Toccoa; son, JD
Saylors Jr., Toccoa; stepchil
dren, Dana Herron and Larry

GAINESVILLE - Estelle
G. Seay, 87, died Friday, July
17,2009, at Northeast Georgia
Medical Center following an
extended illness.
Born on October 17, 1921,
in Hall County, she was the
daughter of the late James H.
and Lilly Dora Smith Grizzle.
Her first job was at New
Holland Mill for 10 years
and her second job was the
first female inspector for the
Department of Agriculture,
where she retired after 24
years of service. She was a
member of Montgomery
Memorial Baptist Church, and
was loved and famous world
wide for her beautiful quilts
and her sewing. She loved
camping and fishing and was
a good carpenter, loved ones
stated. Mrs. Seay was preced
ed in death by brothers, Kelice
Grizzle, Charlie Grizzle and
Frank Grizzle; and a sister,
Louise Grizzle.
Survivors include her hus
band of 32 years, B. Fred
Seay, Gainesville; stepson
and daughter-in-law, Tommy
and Peggy Seay, Hull; broth
ers and sisters-in-law, J.W.
and Mae Grizzle, Junior and

during World War II. Mr.
Skinner was preceded in death

Robert and Susan Broome.
She was an economics teacher
for 31 years before retiring,
having taught many of those
years at Madison County High
School. She was of the Baptist
denomination and a member of
Danielsville Baptist Church.
Mrs. Strickland was preced
ed in death by her husband,
James Howard Strickland.
Survivors include sis
ters, Jimmie Lou Benton,
Jacksonville, Fla., Willie
Ruth Freeman, Lincolnton; a
niece, Linda Gennerich; two
nephews; two great-nephews;
David and Bowen Freeman.

residence surrounded by his
loving family.
Born in Franklin County,
Ala., he was the son of the
late William Lonnie and

Vandiver. He
was a vet-
eran, having
served in the United States
Army during World War II.
Mr. Vandiver was preced
ed in death by sons, Mark
Daniel Vandiver and Hoyt
Lee Vandiver; and a daughter,
Lisa Lynn Vandiver. He loved
his family and grandchildren,
fishing, gardening and wood
working, loved ones stated.
Survivors include his loving
wife of 63 years, Alma (Baker)
Vandiver, Braselton; daughters
and son-in-law, Rosie Mae
and Walter Clark, Winder,
Imojean Mull, Jonette and
Walter Storey, all of Jefferson;
son and daughter-in-law,
Harold D. and Carol Vandiver,
Braselton; 13 grandchildren;
28 great-grandchildren; five
great-great-grandchildren;
and a host of other family and
friends.
