IT WAS just the kind of
night the East Jackson faithful
were hoping for.
After the rains cleared out,
the Eagles of East Jackson
took to a wet, muddy field to
face off against the Spartans
of West Hall. In the end, it
was East Jackson coming away
with a strong 55-26 victory
over the Spartans.
Next the Eagles travel to
Fannin County this Friday to
face the Rebels, who are com
ing off of a 24-18 victory over
Gilmer County.
Kickoff is slated for 7:30
p.m.
Friday went well early for the
Eagles, as senior Deon Sewell
broke into the end zone just
a little over a minute into the
game. The extra point attempt
failed, giving East Jackson a
6-0 lead.
But West Hall wasn't going
to go away quietly, and just a
little over three minutes later,
they put their first points on
the board with a touchdown.
After their extra point attempt
was blocked, the score was
tied 6-6.
East Jackson began driving
down the field, but it appeared
the Spartans might stall their
attempt. The Eagles got a
big first down on West Hall's
34-yard line, allowing them
to keep control of the ball,
and with 4:51 remaining in
the first quarter. East Jackson
broke into the end zone for
their second touchdown of the
night. The Eagles then made
the two-point conversion, tak
ing a 14-6 lead.
East Jackson’s only major
hiccup on the night came
with three and a half minutes
remaining in the quarter, when
the Eagles fumbled a punt
from West Hall and allowed
the Spartans to recover.
Thirteen seconds later, West
Hall had their second touch
down on the night. They made
the two-point conversion,
and the game was again tied,
14-14.
In the second quarter, both
teams were looking for traction
on the wet field, trying to move
into position to break the tie.
East Jackson moved ahead
with just under eight minutes
remaining on the clock, as
Sewell again made his way
into the West Hall end zone for
a touchdown. With the extra
point, the Eagles moved out to
a 21-14 lead.
With just under two minutes
left in the half. The Spartans
tightened things up by scor
ing again. East Jackson again
blocked the extra point, and
the Eagles continued to lead
21-20.
That would prove to be the
closest the Spartans would
come to the Eagles for the rest
of the game. Sophomore C.J.
Allen broke into the Spartans'
end zone with just nine seconds
remaining in the half. With the
extra point, the Eagles carried
a 28-20 lead into halftime.
In the second half, a mis
take by West Hall opened the
door for the Eagles to add to
their lead, when the Spartans
fumbled a punt from East
Jackson just two minutes in.
The Eagles recovered on the
Spartans' 21-yard line. West
Hall looked to redeem them
selves one play later, when
they intercepted a pass from
East Jackson quarterback Evan
Williamson. But the Spartans
fumbled the ball, allowing the
Eagles to again recover.
About a minute later, East
Jackson scored again, as junior
Jermaine Davis made the
touchdown, and with the extra
point, the Eagles moved out to
a 35-20 lead.
From there. East Jackson
would move back down the
field, and Allen would again
find his way into the end zone
to score. With the extra point,
the Eagles moved out to a
42-20 advantage.
The Eagles would draw the
lead out further in the fourth
quarter, with junior Chas
Malcolm scoring to give the
Eagles a 49-20 lead.
West Hall again made their
way into the Eagle end zone
with just under six and a half
minutes remaining in the game,
only to see it called back on
another penalty.
The Spartans finally scored
with just over six minutes left
on the clock, making it a 49-26
game.
East Jackson put their final
points on the board with five
minutes left in the game, run
ning the score to 55-26.
When the buzzer sounded,
it was East Jackson winning
55-26.
Evan Williamson went 3-11
on the night, passing for 52
yards. Deon Sewell had one
catch for 19 yards. Cody
Gibbs had one catch for 23
yards. Scott Hill had one catch
for 10 yards.
Sewell had 15 carries on
the night for 174 yards, scor
ing three touchdowns. C.J.
Allen had 13 carries for 117
yards, scoring three touch
downs. Michael Stephens had
six carries for 65 yards and one
touchdown. Jermaine Davis
had four carries for 48 yards,
scoring on a two-point conver
sion. Tyler Collins had three
carries for 33 yards.
The Eagles rushed for a total
of 463 yards and passed for 52
yards, giving East Jackson 515
yards on the night.
