Off-duty deputy chases aggressive SUV driver
AN OFF-DUTY deputy
followed another vehicle that
was driving aggressively in
West Jackson, according to
the Jackson County Sheriff’s
Office.
A deputy said he was driv
ing his own vehicle along
Jackson Trail Road when he
noticed a black SUV speeding
behind him. The SUV was so
close to the deputy’s vehicle,
that he couldn't see its head
light in his rear view mirror.
The deputy said he tapped
his brakes to attempt to get
the SUV driver to back off
and quit riding his bumper,
according to an incident
report.
The SUV driver locked his
brakes and the deputy moved
onto a shoulder to prevent the
SUV hitting his vehicle. The
SUV then passed the deputy.
The deputy said his arm
was hanging out the window,
and he shook his fist and
hand at the passing SUV. The
deputy then tried to see the
SUV's license plate and drove
85 m.p.h. to catch up with
the SUV, but then resumed
normal driving speed at 55
m.p.h.
The SUV passed several
other vehicles on Hwy. 11 as
it drove to Jefferson, includ
ing forcing one vehicle to run
off the road, the deputy said.
The deputy also contacted
911 about the incident.
The deputy followed the
SUV to Jackson County
Comprehensive High School,
where he said the SUV driver
noticed that he was trying to
get the vehicle’s tag informa
tion.
On the school property, the
SUV driver spun his tires and
later stopped suddenly, as if
he wanted to start a fight, the
deputy said. The SUV then
sped off to Panther Drive,
toward the Damon Gause
Bypass.
A Jefferson police officer
who was working at the inter
section was told by a 911
dispatcher about the SUV and
stopped the vehicle. The off-
duty Jackson County Sheriff’s
Office deputy got out of his
personal vehicle, but the
Jefferson officer told him to
get back in the vehicle.
The Jefferson officer talked
to both the SUV driver and
the deputy about the incident.
An on-duty Jackson County
Sheriff's deputy was also
called to the scene.
The 22-year-old driver of
the SUV said after the deputy
tapped his brakes and he drove
around the deputy, he thought
the deputy was trying to chase
him to harm him, according to
an incident report. The deputy
said he was trying to get the
driver's tag number.
The SUV driver also said he
passed other vehicles in pass
ing zones; the deputy said he
passed in a no-passing zone in
one area.
The SUV driver apologized
to the deputy, and the deputy
agreed that he could see how
the driver believed someone
was chasing him down. The
SUV driver was issued two
