FOR THE first time in school
history, the East Jackson Eagles
football program finds them
selves 2-0 after recording a
region victory over the Fannin
County Rebels at Blue Ridge
Friday night.
The Eagles return home this
Friday night to play host to the
Patriots of Oglethorpe County.
The Patriots come to Eagle
Stadium with a 1-1 overall
record, and 0-1 in the region.
On paper, East Jackson
appears to hold the advantage
going into the game. The
Eagles have scored a total of 90
points so far this season, while
the Patriots have scored 53.
The Patriots have allowed fewer
points to be scored against them
so far this year, however, allow
ing 41 points to East Jackson’s
47.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30
p.m.
FANNIN COUNTY
Both the Eagles and the
Rebels were coming off of sea
son opening victories when both
teams met in Blue Ridge Friday
night. The Rebels had soundly
defeated East Jackson the year
before en route to going 7-3
overall and 6-3 in the region.
But the past didn't matter
when the ball was kicked off
around 7:30 p.m.
The Eagles took charge early,
twice breaking into the Rebels’
end zone to make it a 14-0
game early on.
Fannin County began putting
their own drive together, and
appeared to be on the verge of
putting their first points of the
night on the board when they
fumbled the ball on the Eagles’
three yard line. East Jackson
recovered, and on the next play,
senior Deon Sewell went on a
97-yard run for a touchdown,
giving the Eagles a 21-0 lead.
The Rebels again began
working their way back down
the field, and made it a 21-7
game at the half.
East Jackson continued to
control the game, moving out
to a 28-7 lead in the third quar
ter. Fannin County made a
long pass to again break into
the end zone, moving the score
to 28-14.
East Jackson would twice
break into the Rebels’ end zone,
only to see the touchdowns
called back.
After recovering a fumbled
punt, East Jackson again scored
EJCHS SOFTBALL
to make it a 35-14 game.
Fannin County would score
once more, but got no closer,
as the Eagles went on to win
35-21.

“It was a good football game,”
said coach Frank Caputo. “Our
kids did well as far as getting
mentally prepared. (That) paid
off, because we were ready to
play.”
Now Caputo and his team
will turn their attention to
Friday night, and the visiting
Patriots.
“They’ve got a bunch of kids
and a bunch of skilled athletes,”
Caputo said. “We’re going to
have our work cut out for us.
I think they’re a good football
team. We’ve got to be real cau
tious in our preparations and
make sure our kids understand
that this is going to be a very
intense, high octane football
game.”
Lady Eagles travel to Oglethorpe Friday
By Brandon Reed
AFTER A few days off,
the East Jackson Lady Eagles
were hoping to record their first
region win against Dawson
County last Thursday.
It didn’t work out that way,
as the Lady Tigers picked up
the victory.
Next up for the Lady Eagles
is a trip to Oglethorpe County
to face the Lady Patriots on
Thursday. Oglethorpe enters
the game, their first region pair
ing of the year with a 1-8 over
all record.
First pitch on Thursday is
scheduled for 5:55 p.m.
The Lady Eagles faced off
against Dawson County in their
first region pairing of the sea
son last week.
The Lady Tigers came out
swinging, scoring three runs in
the first inning and then adding
four more in the fourth.
The Lady Eagles made a
strong run at coming back, put
ting five runs of their own on
the board, but they could get no
closer as Dawson County went
on to win 7-5.
“We made some mistakes,”
said coach Jason Rainey. “We
did a good job of coming back,
but we just made some mis
takes. We actually didn’t do a
bad job of hitting the ball.”
Rainey said he and his team
are trying to make a little prog
ress in each game.
“That’s our goal,” he said.
“We’re in a little bit of a differ
ent situation than we’ve been
in previously just because we
have a lot of new people and
everybody’s playing in new
positions.”
The Lady Eagles were slated
to play host to North Oconee on
Tuesday. Results were unavail
able at press time.

EJCHS VOLLEYBALL
Lady Eagles pick
up two more wins
By Brandon Reed
THERE’ VE BEEN some highs and lows for the East Jackson
Lady Eagles volleyball team in the last few matches.
The biggest high was picking up two wins since Aug. 27.
The lows came in four other losses to go with the wins.
The Lady Eagles are next slated to play host to Tallulah Falls
and East Hall on Thursday. Start time is slated for 5 p.m.
On Aug. 27, East Jackson faced off against Clarke Central
and Salem. The Lady Eagles fell to Clarke Central 2-0, with set
scores of 25-11 and 25-20.
The Lady Eagles came away with a win against Salem, win
ning 2-0 with set scores of 25-12 and 25-16.
Next was a home stand against Lakeview Academy and
Walnut Grove. East Jackson fell to the Lady Lions 2-0, with set
scores of 25-12 and 25-16.
But the pairing with Walnut Grove gave the Lady Eagles their
third overall victory of the season, winning 2-0 with set scores
of 25-21 and 25-22.
“We were excited to pick up our 3rd win of the season last
week at home, but disappointed at how inconsistently we
played,” said coach Tim Thomas. “We lost to Lakeview that
night but played pretty well. Then we played very poorly
against Walnut Grove but managed to hang on for the win.”
That third win matches the total number of wins for EJCHS
for their first two volleyball seasons combined.
Next up was a trip to Jefferson to face the Lady Dragons and
Athens Christian. East Jackson found themselves on the short
end of a 2-0 score, with set scores of 25-7 and 26-24. The Lady
Eagles also fell to Athens Christian 2-0, with set scores of 25-16
and 25-20.
“Last week’s match with Jefferson showed how inconsis
tent our performance has been in the first half of the season,”
Thomas said. “They were far and away the better team in game
one, but in game two we played much better. We had a big lead
on them but let them back in it late and lost.”
Thomas said he feels the team’s inconsistency is due to the
lingering effects of illness.
“We just got our last two back from illness against Jefferson
Thursday, but even then we didn’t play them much because we
didn’t feel like they were quite 100 percent yet,” he said. “At
one point a couple of weeks ago we had five girls out sick, and
of our 11 varsity players seven of them have been sick at some
point in the last month.”
Thomas said while those players have trickled back in, in the
interim the team had to do things with the lineup that they didn’t
want to do.
“We’ve had to ask girls to play out of position frequently in
the first half,” he said. “For the most part, they’ve stepped up to
those requests well, and we’ve actually had a few folks leave us
pleasantly surprised at how well they can do things we weren’t
aware of.”
Thomas said despite the illness, the team is still making prog
ress and moving the program forward.
“We’re still coming up short in the win column, but we’re
competing much better. We’re averaging 30 percent more points
per game than last year at this point, and we’ve scored 20 or
more points 14 times, compared to only six last year. With
everyone back at full strength, we’re very optimistic about that
improvement showing up in the win column during the second
half of the season.”
The Lady Eagles were slated to travel to Rabun County to
face the Lady Wildcats on Tuesday. Results of that match were
unavailable at press time.
JCCHS continued from IB
“Haley Shinall threw for
us on the mound,” said coach
Lisa Robinson. “Ashleigh
Lance, Erica Parker and
Andrea Ledford all contrib
uted in the comeback. It was
Haley Shinall, Jessika Laird
and Brooke Griggs who con
sistently hit the ball and got
on base throughout the game
and helped lead their team to
victory.”
The Lady Panthers
were scheduled to travel to
Lawrenceville to face the
Lady Bears of Mountain View.
Results were unavailable at
press time.
