A piece of cake
A COUPLE of days
ago a co-worker
brought in a cake
to share with everyone in the
office. He had just gotten mar
ried two days ear-
lir and the layer of
cake was left over
from the wedding.
Someone asked
if he had thought
to freeze any of
the cake. I don’t
recall hearing his
response. As I
savored the taste of
the delightful treat,
I commented that I
still had the top layer of my
wedding cake in the bottom of
one of my freezers.
Much to my surprise, every
one thought that I was joking.
“Yes!” I responded. “It may
taste like cardboard and we
probably will never eat it, but
I assure you it is there.”
There are many traditions
when it comes to saving wed
ding cake. Many people say
that the top layer is a sign
of prosperity and should be
eaten on the first anniversary.
I guess in some cases they see
it as a way to celebrate mak
ing it through the first year
still married.
Others recommend saving
the cake until the celebration
of the first child’s birthday or
christening. And a few recom
mend putting it in the freezer
until the big 25th anniversary
which I guess is what I've
done.
Just this past week, my hus
band and I celebrated our 20th
wedding anniversary. In fact,
we both forgot about it until
that evening. At that point it
was much too late to run out
and purchase cards and gifts.
I quickly reminded my hubby
that we went on a cruise ear
lier in the year to celebrate
the event. He was relieved
that he was covered and off
the hook.
Since it was our anniversary
and cake and weddings had
all been topics of discussion,
I made my way to the freezer
to check on the con
dition of our cake.
As I dug down in the
depths of ice, I found
a bag of snow that the
boys had kept from
way back when. I also
found cookies that
were carefully made
and decorated for
Santa that I had repos
sessed one Christmas
Eve as a keepsake.
Finally near the bottom I
found something wrapped in
a monstrosity of tin foil. As
I peeled the layers away, I
noticed a strange stench. I
found that what I was holding
was a plastic bag frozen solid
containing trout which my
husband had caught while on
a fishing trip out West a few
years back. Right then and
there that I decided that I was
going to clean out the freezers
the very next day.
When doing so, I am
ashamed to say that I had
to throw out items that were
suffering from freezer burn.
As I rummaged through the
food I found a box labeled
“Don’t throw away.” I quick
ly opened it up to find my
20-year old cake and it was in
A-l condition might I add.
The freezers are now very
neat and organized. The meats
are in one section, and veggies
and other items in another.
I even put the snow, Santa
cookies and of course wed
ding cake in a designated area
in order to keep the “special”
items intact for many years to
come. Searching for the item
of interest had sparked the
whole thing and I must say, it
was actually a piece of cake!
