HOW DOES Road Atlanta
keep growing its signature
event — the Petit Le Mans —
every year?
It offers something differ
ent that not only attracts local
folks, but plenty of race enthu
siasts from around the world,
too.
And this year, that means
featuring the most elite field
of racers in the 12-year his
tory of the Petit Le Mans,
the cornerstone event of the
American Le Mans Series.
“It’s going to be quite a
race just because of the qual
ity of the field and the rival
ry between some of the top
contenders,” said Geoff Lee,
president of Road Atlanta.
For the Braselton track on
Ga. Hwy. 53, that includes
being host to one of the fierc
est rivalries in auto racing
between Audi and Peugeot.
Defending champion Audi
won by just 4.5 seconds last
year, beating Peugeot’s first
appearance at Petit Le Mans.
Audi also beat its rival at 12
Hours of Sebring — another
major race on the American
Le Mans series schedule —
earlier this year.
But, Peugeot finished ahead
of Audi at the 24 Hours of Le
Mans.
For the four-day Petit Le
Mans at Road Atlanta —
which runs from Sept. 23-26
— the battle will continue
between Audi and Peugeot.
Other regular American
Le Mans Series competitors
Patron Highcroft Racing and
de Ferran Motorsports with
Acura, Intersport Racing,
Corsa Motorsports and
ORECA will also be featured
at Petit Le Mans.
In the GT2 racing class,
Porsche, Ferrari, Panoz,
Corvette, BMW and Jaguar
will compete at Road Atlanta
this week.
“There’s any number of
phenomenal sports cars racing
in one series, so the fans are
really going to get a chance
to see these guys go door-to-
door,” Lee said.
Practice and qualifying
for various series and races
at Road Atlanta will be held
Wednesday through Friday,
with most track activity start
ing at 8 a.m. and ending at 6
p.m. each day. Support races
are planned on Thursday and
Friday.
The actual Petit Le Mans —
a l,000-mile/10-hour sports
car endurance race — starts
on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 11
a.m.
Road Atlanta opened its
2.54-mile, 12-turn track in
Braselton on Ga. Hwy. 53 in
1970. The first Petit Le Mans
in 1998 brought 30,000 fans
to Road Atlanta. Last year, the
event hosted 113,000 fans.
“It’s had a wonderful impact
on the community and it’s one
of the reasons that we’re so
well accepted here since the
inception of the race track in
1970,” Lee said.
A study by the Hall County
Convention and Visitors
Bureau showed that Road
Atlanta is the second largest
revenue generator — behind
Lake Lanier — in Hall County,
Lee said.
When race fans roll their
recreational vehicles to Road
Atlanta to camp out for special
events, the property becomes
one of the larger cities in the
county, he added.
The Petit Le Mans is expect
ed to attract people from 37
states and 17 countries, Lee
said.
But even with the large
crowd, organizers of the Petit
Le Mans take pride in the up
close experiences afforded to
fans.
Just before Saturday’s Petit
Le Mans starts, race fans are
allowed to mingle with drivers
and race teams with their cars
with the open grid. There’s
also free access to driver auto
graph sessions and chats, tech
talks and an open paddock
where they can meet drivers
all week long.
“I think it’s probably one of
the more approachable events,
as far as fan access that there
is in pro-sports these days,”
Lee said.
Another popular spot for
race fans is “Spectator Hill,”
where cars race at high speeds
through an “S” curve.
For families, there’s the
Petit Pit Shop with activities
for children. Kids under 12 get
in free with a paying adult.
Vendor Village will feature
food, games, merchandise and
interactive displays.
Tickets range from $55-85,
depending on if fans purchase
a four-day, two-day or one-
day ticket.
Tickets may be purchased
at the Road Atlanta gate —
which is open 24 hours — or
by calling 1-800-849-RACE.
The track is located at 5300
Winder Highway (Ga. Hwy.
53).
