WARD RECEIVES DEGREE

Hammond serving in Suez
Canal, Mediterranean Sea
NAVY SEAMAN Casey M. Hammond, son of Karen L.
and Timbo Parr of Jefferson, along with sailors and Marines
from the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group (BATARG),
Norfolk, Va., and 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU),
Camp Lejeune, N. C., recently departed the 5th Fleet and
entered 6th Fleet's area of operations after traveling through
the Suez Canal and entering the Mediterranean Sea. The
BATARG is preparing to return to the U.S. as it nears the end
of a six-month deployment.
The BATARG has been conducting maritime security
operations while the 22nd MEU participated in several the
ater security cooperation engagements and exercises in 5th
Fleet’s area of operation. The 5th Fleet area of operations
encompasses 2. 5 million square miles of water and includes
the Persian Gulf, the Arabian Sea, the Red Sea, the Gulf of
Aden, the Gulf of Oman and parts of the Indian Ocean.
While deployed, Bataan launched 10 MV-22B Ospreys from
the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit in three waves, completing
the 510 nautical-mile flight to Camp Bastion, Afghanistan, in
just over two hours. The aircraft were part of Marine Medium
Tiltrotor Squadron 263 (Reinforced) and were attached to
Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 261 to serve as part of 2nd
Marine Expeditionary Brigade's aviation combat element.
Hammond is a 2006 graduate of Jackson County
Comprehensive High School, and joined the Navy in
August 2008.
Cheatham completes training
ARMY PVT. Matthew K. Cheatham has graduated from
the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning,
Columbus. The training consists of Basic Infantry Training
and Advanced Individual Training.
During the nine weeks of basic combat training, the soldier
received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons employ
ment, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice,
physical fitness, first aid skills, and Army history, core values
and traditions. Additional training included development of
basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and
experienced use of various weapons and weapons defenses
available to the infantry crewman.
He is the son of Steve Cheatham, Jackson, and Michelle
Peace, Jefferson. The private is a 2005 graduate of Jackson
County Comprehensive High School, Jefferson.

academy in Ga.
THE YOUNG Lawyers
Division of the Georgia State Bar
has selected Dustin Marlowe,
a trial lawyer with Orr Brown
Johnson LLP, to participate in
the YLD Leadership Academy.
The purpose of Leadership
Academy is to educate young
lawyers about important issues
facing the State of Georgia and
nation, help them develop and
refine their leadership skills, and
to foster a mentoring relation
ship between the participants
and select leaders of the Georgia
Bar. The program brings togeth
er 40 young lawyers across the
state and lasts six months.
Marlowe, who practices in
Gainesville, is a Jefferson native
and a magna cum laude gradu
ate of the University of Georgia
School of Law. During law
school, he served as the Senior
Notes Editor of the Georgia law
Review, authored A Dose of
Reality for Section 6(c) of the
Restatement (Third) of Torts,
which the Law Review pub
lished, and was inducted into the
Order of the Coif.
Before law school, Marlowe
attended and graduated magna
cum laude from the University
of Georgia where he was elected
a member of Phi Beta Kappa,
the country's preeminent honor
society for the liberal arts. He
is currently a member of the
Piedmont Bar Association,
the Georgia Trial Lawyers
Association, the American
Association for Justice, and the
Chattahoochee Inn of Court.
He and his wife, Amber,
who is an elementary school
teacher, live in the Brockton
community.
Realtors attend
training seminar
SEVERAL members of the
1-85 North Board of Realtors
recently attended the 2010
Leadership Development
Conference, conducted by
the Georgia Association of
Realtors (GAR).
The conference was held
October 26 in Atlanta. More
than 200 state and local
realtor board officers from
across Georgia attended the
conference. Those in atten
dance included Debbie
Robinson, 2009 President;
Deborah Burdette, President-
Elect; Crystal Weise; Katrina
Scroggs; and Angela Shields,
Association Executive.
While in Atlanta, atten
dees participated in a full day
of training sessions that are
designed to help them lead
their board or state associa
tion more effectively. Courses
were offered by Adorna
Carroll and Robert Authier.

Bert Elder competed in the inaugural running of the
Las Vegas Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon on Dec 6. The
inaugural race consisted of runners from all 50 states
and 39 countries. He took along a copy of The Jackson
