Man beaten after confronting men giving beer to baby
A JACKSON County man was badly beaten by two men
after he confronted them about giving beer to a baby.
The man said he saw his neighbors giving beer to a
15-month-old baby. When he confronted them, he said the two
men began to beat him. The victim was taken to an Athens
hospital and he reportedly has several bones broken in his face
and could possibly lose his right eye, according to the incident
report filed with the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.

ex-boyfriend is harassing her.
•copper stolen from an air condition unit at a Pleasant Acres
Drive, Maysville, location.

•golf clubs and garage door opener taken from a Cabin
Creek Road residence.
•several items taken from two vehicles parked at a Hickory
Drive, Commerce, location.
•a car and tools taken from a Sandy Creek Road, Commerce,
address.
•wire stolen from an irrigation system at a Wayne Poultry
Road, Pendergrass, location.
•a Kiley Drive, Hoschton, woman said someone attempted
to steal the stereo from her vehicle while it was parked in her
yard.
•vehicle fire at a Creek Nation Road, Jefferson, location.
•verbal dispute between a married couple at a Commerce
Road, Jefferson, address.
•purse taken from a car parked at a Nowhere Road, Athens,
location.
•suspicious vehicle at a Dan Waters Road, Commerce,
address.
•sound system stolen from the living room of a Pinetree
Circle, Maysville, location.
•eight copper column toppers taken from the entrance to a
subdivision at Tapp Wood Road, Hoschton.

Thomas sentenced to
one year in federal prison
FORMER ASSISTANT
Jefferson Police Chief
Dennis Thomas was sen
tenced to one year in fed
eral prison Thursday by a
U.S. District Judge William
O'Kelley. He was charged
with possession of a fire
arm while being an illegal
drug user.
Thomas was also fined
$3,000 and will have three
years of probation upon
release from prison. He
pled guilty to the charges
in August.
According to Acting
United States Attorney
Yates, the charges and
other information present
ed in court included: On
October 6, 2008, Thomas’
estranged wife was stay
ing at his son’s home, and
Thomas went to his son's
home in violation of a state
restraining order relating to
contact with his estranged
wife. Thomas attempted
to contact his wife, which
prompted the response of
Jackson County sheriff’s
Office. Further investiga
tion revealed that Thomas
was in possession of loaded
.38 caliber handgun and a
crack pipe with drug resi
due.
Subsequent search war
rants revealed that Thomas
was in possession of a
destructive device (“gre
nade”), crack cocaine and
miscellaneous drug para
phernalia, such as anoth
er crack pipe, spoons and
plates.
This case was investigat
ed by Special Agents of the
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
Firearms and Explosives.
Assistant United States
Attorney Stephanie Gabay-
Smith prosecuted the case.
