IT WAS a good New Year's
break for the Mat Panthers of
Jackson County, as they came
home with their first tourna
ment win of the season with
a victory over the weekend in
the Georgia-Carolina Classic in
Hart County.
Jackson County went 5-0 on
the weekend to win the tourna
ment, with no team scoring
more than 21 points against
them. The Mat Panthers broke
50 in all but one match, that
being the final against Banks
County when they scored 47.
Individually, Zach Moore
went 4-1 on the weekend.
Conner Andreason went 2-2.
D.J. Ledford went 4-1. Ryan
Shekey went 5-0 with three
pins.

“We really wresded well,”
said coach Jason Powers. “Our
lineup is finally where it needs
to be. The first match was kind
of sluggish, but after that we
picked it up and wrestled well
the rest of the day.
“We wrestled as a team, that
was nice. We didn't give up
very many pins. That's how
we were able to keep the scores

low. We only gave up one for
feit all weekend long.”
It was just the kind of win the
team wanted as they get ready
for the Area Duals this week
end in Oconee County.
Powers said they will just try
to keep doing the same thing
they've been doing going into
this weekend.
“It’s completely a different
mindset,” he said. “They're
still wresting, but they’re wres
tling as a team. You win by
bonus points, win by tech, win
by fall and not get pinned. Not
getting pinned is the key to

Lady Dragons pick
up first win of season
By Brandon Reed
THE LADY Dragons of Jefferson picked up their first victory
of the season during the holiday break with a victory over North
Paulding during the Pickens County tournament last week.
Now they look towards the start of region
play, as they will host Banks County at
home on Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for
7 p.m.
Jefferson will travel to Commerce to
face their in-county rivals, the Lady Tigers
on Saturday. Tip-off in that non-region
game is slated for 7 p.m.
NORTH PAULDING
After losing to Kell in the opening round of tournament
play, the Lady Dragons moved on to face North Paulding last
Tuesday in the second round of play.
Jefferson took control early, establishing the tempo and mov
ing out to a 24-4 lead by the end of the first quarter.
From there, the Lady Dragons stuck to their rotation and con
tinued to press on and off the rest of the first half. In the second

Jefferson wins at Winder-
Barrow, Habersham County
By Brandon Reed
IT WAS a successful New
Year's break for the Mat
Dragons of Jefferson, as they
wrapped up some time off of
school with wins at Winder-
Barrow and Habersham
Central last week.
First, Jefferson saw in
the end of 2009 with a vic
tory in the Winder-Barrow
Invitational, scoring 237
points as a team to outdis
tance Collins Hill with 140,
Lumpkin County with 133
and Dacula with 132.
Coach Doug Thurmond said
several of his wrestlers stepped
up to the challenge, including
Isaac Kelley, Jake Sherman,
Daniel Barber, Lucas Redd,
O
Forrest Przybysz and Zack
Allen.
“(They) did real well,”
Thurmond said. “There were
some tough teams and some
tough individuals at that tour-
nament.

Lady Panthers host Elbert Co. Friday
By Brandon Reed
THE JACKSON County
Lady Panthers didn't have
the New Year's break they
had hoped for, as they fell to
Sequoyah and Creekview in
tournament play at Pickens
County.
The Lady Panthers now get
ready to return to region play
with the heart of their region
season ahead of them. Friday
they will play host to the
Lady Blue Devils of Elbert
County, who enters the game
1-3 in region play. Tip-off is
scheduled for 7 p.m.
SEQUOYAH
The Lady Panthers started
off their tournament against
the Sequoyah Lady Chiefs
last Tuesday. Sequoyah took
control early, with Jackson
County having to play catch
up. The Lady Panthers man
aged to cut the lead to 24-17
at the half, but in the second
half, the Lady Chiefs again
pulled out. At the end, it
was Sequoyah taking a 60-36
victory.
Ashley Skelton and Ashley
Lance scored 10 points each
to lead Jackson County in
scoring.
“I was just very frustrated
with the effort as a whole
from that game,” said coach
Chad Pittman. “We didn’t

play with a lot of intensity.
We didn't get after it like we
needed to on either end of the
floor. I was very frustrated in
how we responded.
“They're a good team, kind
of a good way to measure

son. I
felt like
we just
came out flat and didn’t do
much of anything.”
CREEKVIEW

Up next was a pairing
with the Lady Grizzlies of
Creekview on Wednesday.
“We discussed before we
went up there and talked a
whole lot about energy and
intensity and those kind of
things, so I felt a whole lot
better about how hard we
played,” Pittman said. “It
was just one of those days
where we didn't shoot the
ball great and we had too
many turnovers.”
Creekview came away with
the victory. 44-36.
“I felt like our intensity
was really good to hold them
to 44,” Pittman said. “I felt
like the defense was pret
ty good overall, but we had
too many turnovers and we
missed too many easy bas
kets. We missed too many
lay-up opportunities and we
were 6-15 from the free throw
line. We had opportunities,
we just didn't capitalize on
them.”
