Career Fair held for students, hundreds attend
THE BUSINESS and pro
fessional showcase known
as Career Fair was held on
Friday, Nov. 20, with several
hundred students attending to
talk to various people from the
business, vocational and pro
fessional community. After a
couple of years in other loca
tions, this year, Career Fair
returned to Gordon Street
Center's gymnasium.
The Career Fair has nor
mally been an opportunity
for only eighth grade stu
dents to be exposed to vari
ous lifetime opportunities
and to also get an idea of
club life available as they
attend high school. All that
was expanded this year so
that in that in addition to
all eighth grade students in
Jackson County schools and
those of Jefferson, the seniors
of Jackson County and East
Jackson County high schools
and Jefferson High were
invited to the fair.
“Some 1,300 students
from both groups attended,"
said Kerry Hiland, head of
the Career Technical and
Agriculture programs and
responsible for Career Fair.
“We think of this as a service
from our community so that
rising freshmen will have
an expanded opportunity to
think of careers before they
plan their high school years.
They are at a crucial time

and by introducing new ideas
for careers, we hope they
are better able to prepare
themselves for those career
options.”
But this year, the students
were able to give back to
those in businesses including
bankers, dentists, attorneys,
law enforcement, electri
cal workers, veterinarians,
pet groomers and a variety
of other occupations. They
also were exposed to differ
ent higher learning oppor
tunities in the area such as
Lanier Technical and Athens
Technical colleges.
By allowing seniors to see
the scope of local businesses,
they have an opportunity to
see new places they can shop
and new services they can use,
organizers state.
“From comments we
received from students and
teachers, we think this was a
rousing success," Hiland said.
“It is a unique way to help our
students think ahead about the
future, and we are fortunate
that the Jackson County com
munity supports us.”
