Rotary Students of the Month announced
Jefferson bands plan car give-away
THE JEFFERSON Rotary
Club has recognized the
January Students of the
Month.
They are: Sarah June Gray,
East Jackson Comprehensive
High School; Maddison Knick,
Commerce High School;
Wesley Henson, Jackson
County Comprehensive High
School; and Lucas Jeremy
Redd, Jefferson High School.
GRAY
Gray is the daughter of Ivy
Gray, Matthew Bloomberg and
Russ Gray. Her school activi
ties include: Chorale, Theatre,
Marching Band - Drum
Major, Beta Club - Treasurer,
Student Advisory Committee
- President, National English
Honor Society and History
Club - Officer. Her honors
include being in the top 10
percent of her class all through
high school.
Gray named Lisa Simmons
as her most influential teacher.
She plans to attend Georgia
State University and major in
computer science.
KNICK
Knick is the daughter of
Russell and Patti Knick. Her
school activities include: Key
KNICK
Club, Student Government/
Student Council, yearbook
editor, Beta Club and Peer
Mentors. Her sports activities
include varsity football cheer
leading, varsity competition
cheerleading, varsity tennis and
girls’ basketball manager. Her
honors and awards include:
Miss CHS, most involved,
All-State Competition
Cheerleading Squad, Miss
Commerce Southern Grace
and Miss Jackson County.
She chose Terry Miller,
English, as her most influential
teacher. She plans to attend
college either at the University
of Georgia (through cheer
Legion to hold oratorical contest
ALBERT GORDON Post
56, The American Legion,
will hold its third annual ora
torical contest on Saturday,
Jan. 23, at Jackson County
Comprehensive High
School.
All contestants, sponsors
and officials of the contest
should arrive at the school
by 9:30 a.m. The contest
starts at 10 a.m.
Each contestant will pres
ent an eight to 10-minute
oration on the Constitution of
the United States of America.
Also, they will be presented
the assigned topic on which
they will be required to give
a three to five-minute talk.
The assigned topic, select
ed from the following four,
will be given to each contes
tant five minutes prior to his/
her presentation. All contes
tants will speak on the same
assigned topic.
The assigned topic will
include Article 4, Section
3, Paragraph 1; Article
5; Amendment 5; and
Amendment 6.
The first prize will be
$300, the second prize is
$200 and the third prize is
$100.
The winner of the con
test will compete in the 10 th
District oratorical contest.

Wall of Fame students named
EACH MONTH, teachers
at Benton Elementary School
in Nicholson select a student
in their homeroom demon
strating either excellence in
behavior or excellence in edu
cation.
These students are having
their picture displayed on the
wall to acknowledge their
accomplishment. It is Benton’s
hope to spotlight students that
are striving towards educa
tional excellence.
This month’s students of
the month are: Austin Hinz,
Jesus Vargas, Makayla Gooch,
Joshua Valdivieso, Karla Del
Angel, Bradley Sullivan,
Cassey Morgan, Rachael
Yielding, Caitlin Moon, Lexi

Patterson graduates from UNC
ELIZABETH Marie
Patterson graduated with dis
tinction from the University
of North Carolina in Chapel
Hill, N.C., in December with
a double major in manage
ment and society and sociol
ogy.
Patterson is the daughter
of Roger and Faith Patterson,
Chapel Hill, N.C., and
granddaughter of Jackson
County natives Rhuel and
Dorothy Carlton Patterson
and Harvey and Betty Rooks,
all of Gainesville.

HENSON
Henson is the son of Sara
and Warren Henson. His activ
ities include Skills USA Club,
Music Theory and Music
History Club and First Baptist
Church of Commerce Adult
Choir. His honors include: All-
State Chorus, first place soloist
in literary region, honors choir,
second place literary quartet,
JCCHS Choruster Award and
cantata soloist.
Henson chose Todd
Chandler as the teacher most
influential to him. He plans
to attend Shorter College and
major in vocal performance.
He plans to become a profes
sional soloist.
REDD
Redd is the son of Greg
and Mitzi Redd. His activities
include Total Person Program,
Beta Club, FCA, football, base
ball and wrestling. His honors
include: 3-D award winner,
pre-season and post-season
first team all-state, first team
all Northeast Georgia and All-
Region in football, honorable
mention All Northeast Georgia
and All-Region Shortstop in
baseball, state champion as a
sophomore and runner up as a
freshman in wrestling.
Redd chose Ben Hall as
the teacher most influential to
him. He plans to attend col
lege on a sports scholarship
and get a degree in secondary
education.
JEFFERSON Middle
School and Jefferson High
School’s bands are holding a
car raffle as a fund-raiser.
The tickets are being
sold by the Jefferson Band
Booster parents and band
directors. Tickets are $50
each or three for $120.
When three tickets are sold
for $120, all three tickets
must be in the same name
and sequential in ticket
number. Only 1,000 tickets
will be sold and the raffle
will remain open until all
RAY BAKER, Hoschton,
was named to the dean’s list
for fall semester at Freed-
Hardeman University,
Henderson, Tenn.
Students earning a grade
are sold. More than half of
the tickets have already been
sold.
The taxes will be paid
by the winner and will not
exceed $2,000. Those who
buy tickets must be at least
age 18.
