Mat Panthers qualify for State Meet
THE JACKSON County
Mat Panthers will be head
ing to the state duals this
weekend after taking second
in the area duals over the
weekend.
The state duals will be
held Friday and Saturday in
Macon.
The Mat Panthers defeat
ed Archer 70-12, and then
moved on to defeat Oconee
County 48-24 in the semi
final round. Jackson County
then just missed in the
finals, losing to Eastside
28-26. They then had to face
Morgan County in a match
for true second, which the
Mat Panthers won 46-24.
Individually, Izzy Carrillo-
Garcia went 4-0 with two
pins. Jamari Davis went
4-0 with four pins. Charles
Smothers went 4-0 with
three pins. Ryan Howe
went 4-0 with three pins.
Zach Moore went 2-2 on the
weekend. Connor Andreason
went 1-3. D.J. Ledford went
3-1. Jacob Hogan went
0-2. Ryan Shekey went
3-1. Justin Brewer went
3-1. Tre' Horton went 3-1
with two pins and a technical
fall. Daivon Ledford went
2-2. Cody Atkins went 1-0.
Austin McDonald went 3-1.
Josh Spanks went 0-4.
“I feel like we wrestled
very well as a team in three
out of our four matches,
but didn’t wrestle as a team
in the match that mattered
the most,” said coach Jason
Powers. “Charles Smothers
came up with a big win over
Eastside's Dalton Temple
that I thought was the turn
ing point of the match. After
that match, I felt really good
about winning the dual, as
this is one of the matches
that I had picked that could
change the outcome of the
dual. However, we did not
pick up some pins where I
thought we should’ve and we
lost a couple of matches that
we shouldn’t have lost and
that cost us the Area cham
pionship.
“I still feel like we are the
better team, but we were not
the better team on Saturday
when it counted.”
Powers said that after the
Eastside match, the team was
really down on themselves,

against Morgan County that
would send one or the other
to the state tournament.
“We still have the oppor
tunity to wrestle for the
state dual title and that is
our ultimate goal,” Powers
said. “We have to put this
past weekend’s performance
behind us and use it as fuel
to work hard throughout the
week to be a better team as
a whole going into the state
tournament.”
Powers said Tre’ Horton,
Jamari Davis and Charles

Smothers all did an excel
lent job and said he felt they
were the standouts of the
weekend.
“While we had other wres
tlers go 4-0 and 3-1, I felt
that these three did their job
every match. They picked
up bonus points where pos
sible and Tre’ wrestled a
very tough wrestler to a very
close 3-4 decision in his only
loss on the weekend.”
Powers said Cody Atkins
was another wrestler that
deserves praise.
“Cody is a very talented
wrestler and would be var
sity on most any other team
in the state, but happens to
be behind some very talented
wrestlers on our team,” he
said. “I am always able to
put Cody into a match and
know that he is capable of
picking up a win. It takes a
lot to not wrestle all day and
then step into a huge match
and come up with a win and
bonus points and Cody did
that for us this weekend.”
“My goals for the team
have not changed due to the
setback this past weekend,”
Powers added. “I still say
that we are a very talented
team and can wrestle with
anybody in AAA when we
wrestle as a team.”
The Mat Panthers were
slated to travel to Madison
County Tuesday for a match
against the Red Raiders and
East Jackson. Results were
unavailable at press time.

THE JACKSON County
Panthers were hoping to
start the new year off on
a strong note last week.
Unfortunately, that was not
to be as they dropped games
to Habersham Central and
Elbert County.
Up next is a home stand
against Oconee County on
Friday. Tip-off is scheduled
for 8:30 p.m.
Jackson County opened up
the 2010 portion of the sea
son with a non-region pairing
against Habersham Central at
home last Tuesday.
Despite high hopes from
the Panther nation, it was the
Raiders that came away with
the victory, winning 68-49.
Individual statistics were
not available at press time.
On Friday, the Panthers
played host to Elbert County

After getting off to a strong

themselves trailing the Blue

While Jackson County
had remained within shout
ing distance in the first half,
when the third quarter got
underway, the Blue Devils
broke loose. They held the
Panthers to seven points while
tacking on 29 to their lead to
make it a 63-32 advantage at
the end of the third. They
would score 23 more while
holding the Panthers to nine
in the fourth quarter to take
the 86-43 win.
Nick Oney led the Panthers
in scoring with 10 points on
the night. Juice Harrison
scored nine points and had
nine rebounds. Jonathan
Holton scored six points.
“We knew with a team
this strong that there was no
room for error and we would
need to force them to play
in the half court,” said coach
Britt Beaver. “We did that in
the first half and then came
out in the third quarter and
missed our first seven shots.
They scored on every one of
our missed shots and all six
of our turnovers to knock us
out in the third.”
The Panthers were slat
ed to face Archer at home
on Tuesday. Results were
unavailable at press time.
