JCCHS continued from IB
went 3-2. Cody Atkins went
2-1 with two pins. Austin
McDonald went 2-3. Zach
Moore went 2-3. D.J. Ledford
went 2-3. Ryan Shekey went
2-3. Tre' Horton went 2-3.
Conner Andreason went 1-4.
Daivon Ledford went 1-4.
Jacob Hogan went 0-2.
“We went into the week
end hoping for a top four fin
ish and came out with a top
six finish, so while we did
not accomplish our goal we
had a very quality win along
the way,” said coach Jason
Powers. “Our win over West
Laurens is one of the best
dual matches that I have had
the pleasure of coaching and
it was definitely the best dual
match of the year.”
“Every member of the
team did their part during
that dual from top to bottom
and because of this we were
able to beat a very tough
team,” Powers added. “I
am extremely proud of our
team’s effort in this match
and very proud of this win.”
The West Laurens match
was the second one for the
team on Saturday afternoon.
Powers said it was a very
emotional match for the
team.
“Immediately following
this match we had to wrestle
Eastside in the conso-semis,”
Powers said. “This was the
matchup that I had been hop
ing for but we were unable
to turn around and wrestle
in another very emotional
match. I guess the West
Laurens match took every
thing we had because we
did not wrestle well against
Eastside at all.”
The Mat Panthers started
the match out in a 0-32 hold
and never recovered.
“This was a very disap
pointing end for us but hope
fully everyone on the team
got good experience at the
state level and hopefully
we will be able to perform
well when traditional area,
sectionals and state comes
around next month,” Powers
said.
Powers said his team will
be shifting their focus to
individual tournaments from
here on out.
“We have two tournaments
left before we get to Area
and these two tournaments
will be essential in mak
ing the transition from the
dual format to traditional,”
Powers said. “We have to
also take some time over the
next couple of weeks to heal
some injuries that we have
suffered over the past two
weeks.”
“I think that every member
of the team is hurting some
where after these past couple
of weeks and that is expect
ed,” Powers added. “We just
have to make sure they heal
and are ready for the Area
tournament in February.”
Up next for the Mat
Panthers is a home stand
with Gainesville and Forsyth
Central on Thursday. On
Saturday, they’ll travel to
Walhalla, S.C. to take part in
the Walhalla Tournament.
Dragons continued from IB
hard on defense or you’re not
going to play.”
DuBose said he thought
that the team played with
more effort on defense that
night than they had all sea
son long.
“I was really, really pleased
with the effort that we had,”
he added.
OGLETHORPE CO.
The Dragons next trav
eled to Lexington to face
the Patriots of Oglethorpe
County.
Jefferson again took early
control of the game, moving
out to a 21-15 lead at the
end of the first quarter. The
Dragons would continue to
outscore the Patriots in the
second quarter to carry a
45-28 lead into the half.
Oglethorpe was held to
10 points in the third quar
ter while Jefferson added
another 19 to make it 64-38
at the end of the quarter.
The Dragons would go on to
win 92-51 for their second
straight region victory.
Darius Minor led in scor
ing for the Dragons with
22 points. Andrew Bartek
scored 11. David Watson
scored 10.
“The biggest thing in addi
tion to defense in that game
was I thought we were really
running with the ball well,”
DuBose said. “I thought our
point guards were making
good decisions. We were
getting the ball to the right
people, people who were
open in positions to score.
We weren’t forcing a lot of
bad shots. I thought on both
ends of the floor we were
playing very intelligently.”
UNION COUNTY
Jefferson went into play
on Saturday at home against
Union County looking to
remain undefeated in region
play.
But DuBose said he was
a little worried about the
matchup going in.
“That’s the team that
knocked us out of the region
tournament last year in the
first round,” he said. “They
seem to give us trouble. We
don’t seem to play real well
against them sometimes.”
Things didn’t start out so
well for the Dragons, as they
found themselves down 18-4
early in the first quarter.
A late three-pointer made
it 18-7 at the end of the
quarter. After some changes
on the court, Jefferson began
working hard to make up
the difference, outscoring the
Panthers 23-2 in the second
quarter to take a 30-20 lead
going into the half.
The Dragons continued to
play hard in the second half,
outscoring Union 16-11 in
the third quarter to make it
46-31. In the end, Jefferson
came away with their third
region victory in as many
games, winning 62-43.
Darius Minor and J.J.
Damons led in scoring for
Jefferson with 18 points
each. David Watson scored
10 points.
“The end result was fine,”
DuBose said. “It was a much
slower paced game than the
others last weekend. I was
just really pleased that we
responded well after getting
behind 14 points in the first
quarter. Last year, when we
got behind them, we didn’t
handle it very well.
“Last Saturday, I thought
we did a good job. We start
ed playing harder on defense
and created some shots for
ourselves.”
The win gave the Dragons
a 7-0 region record and a
10-6 overall.

Lady Eagles to face Jefferson
LAST WEEK was a strong
one for the East Jackson
Eagles, as they just missed
in a game against North
Oconee before winning their
third region game of the sea
son against Walnut Grove.
Up next is a game that
carries a lot of pride, as the
Eagles will travel to Jefferson
to face the Dragons.
Jefferson enters the week
undefeated in region play,
and 10-6 overall. The
Dragons have won the last
two meetings between the
two teams, in January and
February of last year.
Tip-off is scheduled for
8:30 p.m.
NORTH OCONEE
The Eagles started their
week off with a trip to North
Oconee to face the Titans.
East Jackson worked hard
to stay with the Titans, and
found themselves within 10
points in the fourth quarter.
The Eagles charged, and
late in the quarter, held the
lead. But a shot with six
seconds remaining gave
North Oconee a one-point
edge, and that was all they
needed, as the Titans won
53-52.
Cody Gibbs led the Eagles
in scoring with 13 points.
Brandon Garrett scored 12
on the night.
WALNUT GROVE
Up next was a home stand
for East Jackson, as they
played host to the Warriors
of Walnut Grove.
The Eagles came away
with their first win of the
2010 portion of the season as
they defeated Walnut Grove
77-67.
Brandon Garrett led in
scoring with 33 points on the
night. Cody Gibbs scored
12.
The win leaves the Eagles
3-3 in the region and 4-11
overall.
East Jackson was sched
uled to face Oglethorpe
County at home on Tuesday.
Results were unavailable at
press time.
DESPITE STRONG defensive showings, the East Jackson Lady
Eagles came up on the short end of two losing scores last week,
dropping region pairings to North Oconee and Walnut Grove.
The Lady Eagles will be looking to gain a little region traction
on Friday when they travel to Jefferson to face the Lady Dragons
on Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
NORTH OCONEE
East Jackson traveled to North Oconee last Tuesday to face off
against the Lady Titans.
Things got off to a good start for the Lady Eagles, and they
moved out to a 9-6 advantage by the end of the first quarter. But
the Lady Titans began pushing back hard in the second quarter,
adding 16 points to their total while holding East Jackson to only
five points to take a 22-14 lead into the half. In the end, North
Oconee came away with a 43-29 victory.
Abby Adams led the team in scoring with seven points.
WALNUT GROVE
Up next was a Friday night home stand against Walnut Grove.
The Lady Warriors came out swinging, outscoring East Jackson
22-4 by the end of the first quarter. The Lady Eagles began fight
ing back in the second quarter, putting 16 points on the board
while holding Walnut Grove to nine to cut the lead to 31-20 at
the half.
The Lady Warriors again built on their lead, adding 14 points in
the third quarter while holding East Jackson to nine to lead 45-29
at the end of the third. The Lady Eagles made another strong
charge in the fourth quarter, scoring 11 points while holding the
Lady Warriors to five, but could get no closer. Walnut Grove
picked up the win 50-40.
Callie Moore was the leading scorer for East Jackson with 12
points on the night. Lashundra Gresham scored 11.
