WEST JACKSON Middle School has
29 band students chosen to perform with
the 2010 GMES 13th District Honor
Band.
After a rigorous audition process
involving scales, etudes and sight-read
ing, the musicians were determined to
be the best on their chosen instrument by
professional musicians.
The district honor band will convene
on Feb. 12 and 13 and will perform a
concert on Feb. 13 at the Georgia Baptist
Conference Center, Toccoa.
The WJMS band students who were
chosen for District Concert Band are:
Beau Harper and Kirby Watkins, bari
tones: Sabastian Adams and Abby
Hensley, bass clarinet; Allie Duck and
Brianna Manculich, clarinet; Jordan
Garner, French horn; Anna Oroian,
flute; Daniel Powell, tenor saxophone;
Austin Parker, trombone; and Antonio
Gonzalez, Brianna Weekley and Payton
Foster, trumpets.
The WJMS band students who were
chosen for District Honor Band are:
Hailey Hunt, alto sax; Austin Duke,
Emily Fisher and Michael Quinton, bari
tones; Cristian Benjumea, bass clarinet;
Erica Sanchez, clarinet; Casey Hitzges
and Kourtney Axelberg, French horn;
Sarah Phillips and Morgan McLean,
flute; Zach Buran and Allison Biddle,
percussion; Chris Nix and Tyler Davis,
trombones; Michaela Thomas, trumpet;
and Stuart Bain, tuba.
BENTON SPELLING
BEE PARTICIPANTS
Benton Elementary School
recently participated in a
school wide spelling bee.
Spellers from fourth and
fifth grade were: Cole
Carithers, Gavyn Nesmith,
Antonio Sanchez, Anna
Begley, Madison Perry,
Holleigh Looney, Christian
Bland, Autumn Puckett,
Ky’anna Authurton and
Grace Moore. The winner
was Autumn Puckett and
alternative winner was
Ky’anna Authurton.
Jackson EMC to recognize young volunteers
APPLICATIONS ARE
being accepted for Jackson
Electric Membership
Corporation's 2010 Youth
Citizenship Award (YCA).
Applicants should be a high
school junior or senior, and
be involved in community or
school volunteer organiza
tions whose chief objective is
improving the community.
Leadership positions and
high GPAs are considered,
but are not a necessity for
the award. Applicants should
explain why they volunteer,
how much time they devote
to their activities and what
they're doing to improve their
communities.
The winner of the award
will earn the title, along with
a $2,000 college scholarship,
$1,000 grant to distribute to
a school or civic organization
of choice and an all-expense
paid trip to Washington, D.C.,
for the Washington Youth
Tour.
“College admissions are
very competitive, and we
realize that more students are
looking for community orient
ed activities to enhance their
applications and resumes,”
said Randall Pugh, Jackson
EMC president and CEO.
“The YCA program will not
only provide a great resume
builder, but will also applaud
student volunteerism and civic
involvement.”

More than one student from
a school may apply. Students
do not have to be Jackson
EMC customers to participate
but must attend a high school
in Jackson EMC's service ter
ritory. Applicants must submit
a form and send at least one
professional letter of recom
mendation from a sponsor of
a group/organization where
they volunteer.

There will be approximately
a one-week lag time between
the time photos are published
and their availability at the
online site.
Those who don't have
Internet access in their homes
may visit area public libraries
that offer the service.

SPELLING BEE WINNERS
Autumn Puckett was the winner of the recent spelling
bee held at Benton Elementary School. The alternative
winner was Ky’anna Authurton.

Panther Baseball Camp to be held
GOSPEL SINGING
THE THIRD annual Jackson County
Panther Baseball Camp will be held on
Saturday, February 13 at the JCCHS baseball
field and indoor hitting facility. The event
will run from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and is for
players first grade through seventh grade.
Participants will receive fundamental
defensive and hitting instruction, broken
down by age groups and skill levels from
JCCHS head coach Tommy Fountain, the
JCCHS baseball staff and current and former
high school and college baseball players.
The cost is $25, which includes a t-shirt if
the participant is signed up by first week of
February.
