THE JEFFERSON Dragons
entered play this week unde
feated in the sub-region and
with a victory against one of
their archrivals after defeating
the East Jackson Eagles last
week.
The win left Jefferson 8-0 in
the region and 11-6 overall.
Up next for the Dragons is
a non-region pairing that still
carries a lot of importance, as
they will host Commerce at
home Friday night.

EAST JACKSON
Jefferson played host Friday
night to the Eagles of East
Jackson in what was the first of
two region games between the
in-county rivals this season.
Jefferson took a brief early
lead, but then found themselves
trailing 16-12 at the end of the
first quarter after East Jackson
made a strong run from about
halfway through the quarter
on.
The Dragons settled into
their rhythm in the second
quarter and began working to
regain the lead. They were
met with strong competition
from the Eagles, but by the end
of the quarter, Jefferson had
managed to ease out to a four-
point lead over East Jackson.
The Dragons carried a 32-28
advantage into halftime.
Both teams turned in equal
ly strong performances in
the third quarter, and seemed
evenly matched throughout the
eight minutes of play. The
Dragons were able to maintain
a four-point advantage, leading
49-45 at the end of the quarter.
The Dragons were finally
able to get the breaks they
needed, finding shots while
the Eagles came up empty
on several attempts. That
allowed Jefferson to move out
to a 10-point advantage as the
clock ran down and in the end,
the Dragons came away with
a 66-55 victory in a game that
was much closer than the score
indicates.
JJ. Damons led in scoring
for the Dragons with 27 points
and nine rebounds. Darius
Minor scored 16.
“It was a close game the
whole ballgame,” said coach
Bolling DuBose. “We were
obviously very pleased to
come out with the win for a
lot of reasons. Number one,
it’s a sub-region game, and I
believe East Jackson is one of
the teams we're going to have
to contend with if we "re going
to win a region championship.
Also, they're one of our arch
rivals now right here in the
county. Our kids know their
kids and they even have a few
kids that went to Jefferson at
one time.”
DuBose said the packed gym
provided a great atmosphere
for the game.
“It was just the kind of thing
that you look forward to as a
player and a coach. It was a
lot of fun.”
DuBose said both teams
played hard against each other.
“Obviously both of us made
mistakes throughout the game,
as you will any game, but I
thought both teams played
really hard against each other,”
DuBose said. “Both teams
played well in spots but gave
up some easy things in spots. I
just think we made a few more
plays than they did.”
The Dragons were slated to
play host to North Oconee on
Tuesday.
Results were unavailable at
press time.

Lady Dragons host Commerce Friday
By Brandon Reed
IT WAS a close, rough and
tumble game Friday night, but
in the end, the Jefferson Lady
Dragons came away with a
region victory in overtime over
in-county rivals East Jackson
for their second region win of
the season.
Up next is a rematch with
another in-county rival, the
Lady Tigers of Commerce.
Jefferson is looking to follow
up a win over Commerce ear
lier this month with another
victory.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7
p.m.
EAST JACKSON
The Lady Dragons went into
Friday night not only looking
for their second region win of
the season, but also looking
for a victory over their in
county rivals. East Jackson.
Both teams were pretty
even for the first quarter, as
they fought back and forth for
control of the game. At the
end of the first quarter, it was
a tie game, 9-9.
Both groups looked for an
advantage in the second quar
ter in what continued to be
a very evenly matched con
test. By the half, however, the
Lady Dragons were able to
pull out to a three-point lead,
taking a slim 24-21 edge into
halftime.
Jefferson turned in some of
their best performances in the
third quarter, as they held East
Jackson to nine points while
scoring 17 to take a com
manding 41-30 advantage by
the end of the third.
But the Lady Eagles refused
to give up. Over the course
of the fourth quarter, East
Jackson came roaring back,
putting

With 17 seconds left on
the clock, the Lady Eagles
scored to take a 51-49 lead. A
foul shot moments later gave
them a three-point advantage,
52-49.
The Lady Dragons made
their way back down the
court, however, and a last sec
ond three-pointer from Skylar
Evanson at the buzzer tied the
game, sending the contest into
overtime.
“It was one of the great shots
in the game of basketball,”
said coach Jason Gibson. “I
don't think that I'll ever forget
the shot and the reaction from
our players and the crowd.
It was definitely an exciting
moment to be part of.”
