JCCHS BOYS BASKETBALL
JHS WRESTLING
Panthers host Stephens County Fri.
By Brandon Reed
THE JACKSON County
Panthers are still searching
for their first win of the new
year this week, as well as
looking to gain some ground
in region play after dropping
games last week to Mountain
View and Hart County.
The Panthers will play host
to Stephens County Friday
night at the Pit. The Indians
enter play this week 1-6 in
the region and 3-14 overall.
The Panthers won in their
last meeting back on Dec.
11, 59-47.
Tip-off is scheduled for
8:30 p.m.
MOUNTAIN VIEW
Last Tuesday, the Panthers
traveled to Lawrenceville to
face the Bears of Mountain
View.
Things did not start well
for the Panthers, who were
held to six points in the
first quarter while Mountain
View moved out to a 19-6
lead. Jackson County would
rebound to score 19 points in
the second quarter, but the
Bears scored 19 as well, giv
ing them a 28-25 lead going
into the half.
The Panthers would try to
close in the third quarter,
but couldn't close the gap as
Mountain View maintained a
12-point advantage, 51-39,
at the end of the third. The
Bears would pull out to a
19-point difference before
the final buzzer, winning
74-55.
Juice Harrison led the
Panthers in scoring with 18
points. Joseph Smith scored
12. Jarvis Shaw scored
nine.
“We did not play well,” said
coach Britt Beaver. “(We) did
not shoot the ball very well.
Juice did a great job anytime
we got the ball inside to him.

Jackson County began

in the third quarter, adding
13 points to their total while
the Bulldogs scored 17 to
make it a 61-38 ballgame

Panthers again tried to mount
a comeback in the fourth, but

Joseph Smith led in scor

ball very well.”
Beaver said his team
showed great intensity and
great effort in the game.
“We had a year high 26
turnovers and you won't beat
anyone with that stat,” he

FOR THE third time in
four years, the Jefferson Mat

the Sham Slam at Habersham
Central High School with the
tournament title.

ors on Saturday with 273.5
points, besting Lafayette with
198, Northwest Whitfield with
193, White County with 127
and Alexander with 105.
Five Mat Dragons took top
honors in the tournament in
their weight classes, including
Kyle Springer, Cain Finch,

second place honors in
their weight classes. Clay
Richardson and Wayne Elliott
took third in their classes,
while Jace McColskey and
Sammy Loggins placed fourth
in their weight classes.
“The team did real good,”
said coach Doug Thurmond.
“We were real proud of
them. It was a hard tour
nament. Lafayette is tough,
Northwest Whitfield is tough,
and Alexander is pretty tough
being state runner-up in 4-A.”
Also during the event,
Jefferson coach Jack Keen
was presented with the sec
ond Sham Slam Lifetime
Achievement award for his
years of service.
Up next for the Mat
Dragons is a trip to St. Pius
to face St. Pius, Dunwoody
and Central Carrollton today
(Wednesday).
After that is a trip to Forsyth
County this weekend to take
part in the Coal Mountain
Classic.
“My main concern is to
get our guys some mat time,
keep them wrestling, but keep
them safe and kind of cross
our fingers and hope nobody
gets hurt,” Thurmond said.
“There’s a virus going around
now and some congestive
sickness that’s caused us to
miss some guys in practice.
We're just doing our best to
keep them healthy. We’re
going to try to do that until
we hit area next weekend at
Riverside.”
Panthers continued from IB
who went 3-0 with two pins, Charles Smothers,
who went 3-0 with three pins and Ryan Howe,
who went 3-0 with two pins.
Zack Moore finished second, going 2-1.
Austin McDonald placed second with two pins.
Tre’ Horton placed third with two pins. Justin
Brewer went 2-2 for a fourth place effort.
Daivon Ledford went 2-2. Conner Andreason
went 1-2. Josh Spanks went 1-2. Jacob Hogan
went 0-2.
“Our team is starting to come around nicely
right now,” said coach Jason Powers. “We are
making a very good transition from dual into
individual. Our practices started getting better
the week of state duals and I feel that we are
making improvements both as a team and as
individuals.”
Powers said the Walhalla tournament was
very good for his team.
“There was only one other team in the tourna
ment from Georgia, so we got to wrestle against
some different competition. I think this will help
us prepare for the sectional tournament and the
state tournament because it makes our wrestlers
adjust to different styles that they have not seen
before. It was also a nice break from wrestling
teams that we have seen since the beginning of
the season. Most of our matches did not have
any effect on Area seeding. We were just able to
relax and wrestle.”
“Many of our wrestlers earned their first
tournament place of their career and others won
their first tournament championship of their
career wrestling against some tough competi
tion from South Carolina and North Carolina,”
Powers added. “All in all it was a great week
end of wrestling.”
The Mat Panthers were slated to host
Oglethorpe, Monroe Area and Riverside
Military Tuesday. Results were unavailable at
press time.
Jackson County will travel to Oglethorpe
County this weekend to take part in the Patriot
Classic.
