Eagles second in sub-region standings
THE EAGLES ofEast Jackson
came away from play last week
with an important region win
over Banks County, and even
more importantly, came away
with sole possession of second
place in the sub-region.
The Eagles are set to launch
into the last five games of region
play this week. On Friday,
they’ll travel to Walnut Grove to
face the Warriors.
East Jackson came away vic
torious from the last meeting of
the two teams, winning 77-57
back on Jan. 15.
Tip-off Friday is scheduled
for 8:30 p.m.
BANKS COUNTY
On Tuesday, the Eagles faced
off against the Banks County
Leopards at Homer.
The first half was an up and
down struggle, with the Eagles
constantly looking for traction
against the Leopards. East
Jackson was able to squeak out a
one-point advantage, going into
the half with a slight lead.
The Eagles finally got then-
legs under them in the third
quarter, pushing out a lead that
they carried into the fourth quar
ter.
But poor free throw shoot
ing in the last eight minutes of
the game allowed the Leopards
to close the gap. In the final
moments, however. East Jackson
was able to hold Banks at bay to
come away with a 58-53 vic
tory.
More importandy, the win
gave the Eagles sole posses
sion of second place in the sub-
region, trailing only Jefferson.
Brandon Garrett led the Eagles
in scoring with 24 points on the
night.
The Eagles were next slated
to face Oconee County in non
region play on Saturday, but that
game was cancelled due to bad
weather. It will not be resched
uled.
East Jackson was scheduled to
take on North Oconee Tuesday
night at home.
Results were unavailable at
press time.

lead. The Lady Eagles came
to life in the second quarter,
putting 19 points on the board

East Jackson would continue
to come on strong in the sec

Commerce only four points in the third quarter to
make it a 40-10 advantage at the end of the third.
Commerce made their biggest gain in the fourth
quarter, but still couldn’t come close, as Jefferson
went on to win 46-24.
“I thought it was one of the better halves of
basketball that we’ve played all year,” Gibson
said. “Intensity wise, effort wise, we finally
put both ends of the floor together. We played
exceptionally well on defense and we shot the
ball well. We were every aggressive and attacked
them. We were able to put some points on the
board and take control of the game in the first
half.”
Stephanie Fincher was the leading scorer
against Commerce with 10 points. Rachel Goza
scored 10. Erin Knight scored eight.
BANKS COUNTY
On Saturday, Jefferson played host to the Lady
Leopards of Banks County in a makeup game
rescheduled from Jan. 8 due to bad weather.
Much like the North Oconee game on Tuesday,
Saturday’s game started out as a close one. It was
very back and forth for the first eight minutes,
with the Lady Leopards coming away with a slim
advantage, leading 10-9 at the end of the first
JHS WRESTLING
quarter. It would remain close through the rest
of the first half, as Banks County held Jefferson
to nine points in the second quarter while adding
12 to their lead to make it a 22-18 game going
into the half.
The Lady Dragons began to turn the tide in
the second half, as they scored 19 points in the
third quarter while holding the Lady Leopards
to 11 points, giving Jefferson a 37-28 lead at the
end of the quarter. The Lady Dragons broke out
in the fourth quarter, allowing Banks only nine
points while they added 16 to their total to give
Jefferson the 53-37 victory.
Stephanie Fincher led in scoring with 15
points. Erin Knight scored eight.
That win put the Lady Dragons 3-2 in the
region, putting them within striking distance of
first and second place.
With just a handful of region games left,
Gibson says each is equally important.
“We "re trying to continue each week and
improve each week and take each game one at a
time,” he said.
The Lady Dragons were slated to face Walnut
Grove on Tuesday. Results were unavailable at
press time.
Jefferson prepares for Area Traditionals
MARK LAST week down as
another successful one for the
Jefferson Wresding program, as
they get ready for this week
end’s Area Traditional tourna
ment, to be held Friday and
Saturday at Riverside Military
Academy in Gainesville.
The Mat Dragons took part in
their last dual meet of the sea
son last Tuesday, as they took
on St. Pius and Dunwoody.
They came away with victories
over both, defeating St. Pius
66-9 and Dunwoody 72-6.
The Varsity team was next
scheduled to take part in the
Coal Mountain Classic at North
Forsyth. That meet was can
celled, however, due to inclem
ent weather.
The JV team, meanwhile,
took part in the King of the
Hill tournament in Suwanee,
where Jefferson placed second,
trailing only Collins Hill at the
end.
Jefferson had five champions
out of eight placers. Among
those taking first were Cannon
Joiner in the 103 lb. class, Josh
Harris in the 112 lb. category,
Caleb King in the 125 lb. class,
Carson Newman in the 189
lb. class and Kevin Selleck in
the 215 lb. class. Other plac
ers included Ryan Deblocker,
who took second in the 140
lb. category, Jack Dollar tak
ing third in the 130 lb. class
and Shaq Maxey taking fifth
in the 160 lb. category. Also
winning matches were Hugh
Blackstock, Cody Carlson and
Cody Garrard.
Now the attention for the Mat
Dragons turns to the varsity
Area Traditionals at Riverside
this weekend.
“You don’t ever know really
what to expect because you
know each team is going to
have a couple of good kids
in there,” said coach Doug
Thurmond. “Our main objec
tive is to go in there and put all
of our kids in the sectionals the
following week in the best situ
ation they can be in, which is,
or course, the higher they place,
the better.”
Thurmond said the goal is to
try to win 14 weight classes.
“Of course, I don’t know if
that’s feasible or not, but that’s
what we’re shooting for,” he
said. “We want to put ourselves
in the best situation we can to
come out of area into sectionals
with a good run, then come out
of sectionals into state with a
good ran.”
