Jefferson netters to host North Oconee
AFTER SEEING Tuesday’s
boys’ game with Riverside
postponed due to wintry
weather, the Jefferson tennis
teams will next play host to
North Oconee on Thursday.
Both teams enter play this
week undefeated after victo
ries over Elbert County and
Winder-Barrow.
Jefferson will travel to
Lakeview Academy on March
9, then travel to Walnut Grove
on March 11 and Hart County
on March 15. They will
return home on March 18 to
face Banks County, then host
Athens Academy on March
22. Jefferson will wrap up
their regular season on March
23 at East Jackson.
Dragons continued from IB
within three points of the lead. Over the next five
minutes, Manchester would continue to pull out a
lead only to see it cut back to within three points
repeatedly by the Dragons.
With just over a minute left on the clock, the
Dragons closed the lead down to just one point,
63-62. Manchester was again able to slip away,
but with just 16 seconds remaining on the clock,
a three-pointer by David Watson again brought
the difference down to one point, 67-66.
With time quickly running out, Jefferson again
got the ball, as Chesser brought it down for a
shot. It bounced off the rim, but David Watson
rebounded for a put-back, giving the Dragons a
68-67 lead with just four seconds remaining on
the clock.
Manchester got one shot off from half court,
but it bounced off the rim, sending Jefferson to
the second round of state play.
“We never led until four seconds were left,”
DuBose said. “That’s just an unbelievable end
ing, to be behind for 31 minutes and 56 seconds
and then get a tip-in to put you ahead. I thought
we did a good job. They certainly had time to
go down and get a shot off, as quick as they are.
I thought we did a good job of defending them
when they brought the ball in bounds.”
David Watson led in scoring with 21 points. JJ.
Damons scored 18 points and had 14 rebounds
on the night.
DuBose said that, just like with the Feb. 23
game against Riverside that they won by just
one point, his players have to put the Manchester
game behind them and get ready for their next
challenge, Westminster.
“Westminster is a lot more like Riverside,” he
said. “They’re very deliberate, they’re going to
try to slow the game down and keep the score in
the 40s or 50s. They’re very big. They’re going
to be so much bigger than we are.”
DuBose said Westminster is going to be a very
good team, but a very different one from what
they saw against Manchester.
“They’re going to try to make it a half court
game, slow the game down and use their size.
“It’s going to be a real challenge. I think the
team that controls the tempo will have a distinct
advantage.”
The Warriors took control early on, putting
two runs on the board in the top of the first,
then adding two more in the top of the second.
The Dragons would put their first and only
run of the game across the plate in the bottom
of the second.
Oconee County would score for the sixth
and final time in the top of the fourth, as the
Warriors went on to win 6-1.
Jamie Sexton recorded the loss, giving up
four hits and five runs in just under an inning
and a half.
Jake Fields went 2-3 at the plate. Corey
Wilkins scored an RBI.
MADISON COUNTY
Still stinging from their first season open
ing loss in two years, the Dragons traveled
to Danielsville Thursday to face the Madison
County Red Raiders.
After taking an early 1-0 lead, the Dragons
again found themselves behind as Madison
County put two runners across in the bottom
of the first to take a 2-1 lead.
After a scoreless third inning, the Dragons
would score one run each in the third, fourth
and fifth, while holding the Red Raiders
scoreless.
Jefferson broke the game open in the sixth,
putting five runners across to take a seven-run
advantage.
In the end, the Dragons recorded their first
victory of 2010, winning 9-2.
Jake Fields recorded the win, giving up two
runs and three hits while striking out nine.
Fields also led the Dragons at the plate,
going 4-5 with a run and three RBIs. Kyle
Hardy went 2-3 with two runs. Caleb Meek
went 1-4, with one run and one RBI.

Shannon Sell
Although less than ideal, sellers are seeing more and
more "contingency" contracts, wherein the buyers make
their offer contingent upon being able to sell their own
home before they complete the purchase of the new one.
If the buyers aren't successful, the contract becomes null
and void, potentially leaving the sellers at square one.
A compromise, called a "kick-out clause" is wording
included in the contract that allows the sellers to continue
marketing their home, even while under contract. If the
sellers receive another offer, the buyers are granted a
"kick-out" period - usually 72 hours - to respond by
removing their sell-first contingency or by securing the
financing needed to complete the purchase.
Unfortunately, the chances are that most buyers who
must sell first likely won't qualify for another loan on the
new property. If the buyers fail on both counts - selling
and financing - then the sellers have the right to accept
another offer from qualified buyers.
While this might seem to put the buyers at a
disadvantage, it is necessary for sellers to have protection
against a contract that could tie up their listing
indefinitely. These types of contingencies are common in
a buyer's market; however, market conditions are always
changing, and the time will come when sellers will again
"rule" contracts.
